I saw some posts about upgrading from earlier clie handhelds. What advice do I need before I try to upgrade from my TRGPro?

Will the apps I have on my current palm still work on the Clie? How should I go about transferring everything?

Also, since this is obviously my first clie, is there anything else I should know. I have read the newbie posts and they have been very informative. I can't wait to try it out...just got it...on the charger right now!

Thanks!

Emily

One of my first recommendations is to check and make sure you have the latest versions of the apps you use. Also many apps have different version for various types of screens, particularly those that are graphics-intensive. checking those two things for all the third-party apps you have will help insure compatibility.

Second thing to remember is that you need to ditch your hacks. They won't work on your new clie except for a very select few. If you just so happen to have one that specifically states OS5 compatibility, make sure you use YAHM as your hack manager.

Most of your pim data (datebook, address book, todos, and memos) should transfer just fine, though when restoring I would be careful not to restore any other data that was on your TGRPro. For your other data, check software compatiblity and restore indvidually. You can do this by moving the backup directory on your computer to some kind of temporary directory, then hotsyncing what ever files you find to be compatible. This is specifically important when upgrading to a new manufacturer and a new OS version. I know TGRPro had quite a few custom updates (like VFS for 3.5.3).

About the only thing you really need to know about your new clie is to keep in mind that as is, the built-in media apps don't recognize the compact flash card (which I'm assuming you had with your TGRPro). Other, third party apps do read the CF card just fine without additional hacks or utilities.

So, how exactly do I go about "restoring"? Should I uninstall my old palm desktop and install the one that came with the Clie or does it matter?

For the PIM data, do I copy the folders for address, datebook, etc. from under Palm\<user> to some new location for syncing or will it just find them there?

Thanks again!

Also, can I use the CF apps from the TRGPro? For example, could I use CF Backup to restore files right from the CF card onto my Clie?

It DOES matter that you install the Sony version of Palm desktop. Your Clie will not sync with a non-Sony version.

Option:
To be extra careful, I used the Yahoo Intellisync Lite to backup my old PDA with Yahoo. You get this by joining Yahoo (which is free), then going to "My Account", and then going to your "Addresses" page or "Calendar" page. In the top right hand corner of either of these pages, you will see the offer to sync your pda with Yahoo. Follow the link and get Intellisync Lite. Then sync your old pda with Yahoo. Now all your PIM info is on your account at Yahoo (which was very helpful to me when I was traveling overseas.) (And you can later sync this info with your Clie.)

Next, follow Sony's instructions for installing the Palm desktop. You will delete your old Palm Desktop. That's very scary, I know. But the good news is, after you install the Sony Palm desktop, you can now sync your old pda *and* your Clie with the Sony Palm desktop.

Now for the catch: the 2 pdas cannot have the same user name. If they do, you will hot sync TRGPro files to the Clie and Sony files to the TRGPro. This would be a disaster to both pdas.

Go ahead and sync your TRGPro. It will restore your PIM data to the new Palm desktop. Export each of these files (addresses, calendar, memo, to do)to a folder whose name you remember. Now sync your Clie. When the sync first starts, you will have the opportunity to give your Clie its User Name. Again--don't give it the same name as your TRGPro. After the sync, look in the upper right hand corner of your palm desktop. There is a drop down for the User Name. Go to your Clie's User Name. Now you are going to import each of the files that you had exported from the TRGPro user name earlier. Sync your Clie again, and it will receive the PIM info.

Now you have the same PIM data on both pdas. Phew!!! :o

About all your other programs. It's hard to say if they will work or not. Some may, some may not. You should look up each program on the web, and see if your current version of the program is compatible with your Clie. Your Clie has a more advanced OS, and a screen with more real estate and resolution than the TRGPro.

I hope you enjoy your Clie as much as I enjoy mine!! :)
