I just found this program, it is now my program of choice for converting DVD's to xVid format-

This is good for people who don't want to use VirtualDub (most powerful option but harder to use.)

Unlike DVDx, you can encode in mp3 at lower bitrates (I use 56 kbps with good results.)

The only limitation is that you currently can't adjust the output frame rate (I would rather lower it a bit for better picture quality.) But with 2-pass xVid encoding, I get really great results anyway (I was actually very surprised at the results!) I typically go for about 220 to 300 MB final output size, depending on movie length.

If you are ripping your own DVD's, you can use DVD Decrypter to rip to your HD, then use SimpleDivx to encode (I don't know if it's technically legal or not, but I do it with my own DVD's). You don't want to use any DVD (protected or not) to rip directly from, as it can decrease the life of your DVD-drive (due to the length of the total encoding process).
