View Full Version : Credit where credit is due

Hi all,
Maybe I am being overly sensitive here, but a guide has been posted in one of the forums here giving an excellent discription of how to easily do somthing that confuses a lot of people.
The thing is, that about 30% of the guide is a copy and paste of instructions that I gave in another thread where I explained to the author how to do a part of the process that I think that a lot of people didn't know..
If I wrote a guide like this and used someone else's post word-for-word, I would give them credit for it by saying who had written that portion of the text. However, this person apparently didn't think it was necessary and claimed the text as his own.
Am I being overly sensitive by being annoyed, or do I have a right to expect a nod for having helped this guy in the first place?
Just curious....

It wasn't me was it? If it was, I am sorry.

If they copied exactly, it's plagurism. You can technically file a lawsuit about it, but it would be a much more practical thing to just ask him to give you some credit.

No fears Depret...if you have been plagiarizing posts I haven't noticed it :) !
Actually, I have been re-reading the post in question and: a) I don't agree with 100% of the process (its not as efficient as it could be); and b) notice that it has an error at the end.
Maybe if I can find the time I will just write up my own guide...but I don't see the time presenting itself anytime soon.

@Yuriv: I have been writing on the fly quite a bit lately...
I agree with yoyoyoo, I had the same thought about your first paragraph. Could you provide a link so we can get on the same page? Thanks in advance.
IMO, zach is right about just asking for credit to be give to you, PM the person, be specific and clear up the problem off-line.

To my thinking, if I can help someone directly, that is nice. But if I can help someone THROUGH someone else, that is even better, because now my helpful efforts have been doubled. Where I was one to help, now there are two...and hopefully more multiply from there. Maybe this is more appropos in 'real life', but the satisfaction in helping should the reward, not the foolish pride of being recognized for it.
Granted, as an element of ettiquette the person in question should have credited you for your help, but you know that YOU are the genesis of the help...take pride in that.
Since it has not been said outright, THANK YOU for putting the time, effort and expertise into helping fellow users. Although I have no idea it what way you were helpful, since it was quoted extensively, I am sure your efforts were helpful to many. Well Done! The community appreciates your helpful nature. It is the life blood of 1src, and you are truly an asset to the community!

I'd be a little upset and maybe send a personal message to them or perhaps even post in the same thread in a non-offensive way and in a jokingly way but pretty much be like "Whatchya doing man?"
Oh by the way.. it wasn't me was it?.. You know.. when I posted about how I discovered how to achieve world peace and solve the world hunger problem while still providing clean global power to all the nations of the world all from my Clie? :)
