View Full Version : No more free WAP access on T-Mobile = no more surfing with UX50 via BT?

Recently when T-Mobile dumped their free WAP access, I thought it would affect my BT connectivity for surfing on my UX50. For a while it still worked after the free WAP access was cut off. However, now I'm not able to connect to any sites via Netfront on my UX50 through BT. Any site I try times out.

I haven't changed any settings, and the UX50 is able to connect and sign on just fine, but once I fire up Netfront (and I've tried both 3.0 and 3.1), no sites load.

Is anyone else having this issue? If you were, did you sign up for the $4.99/mo WAP access and get your connection restored? Or is this not an option for UX50 with a SE T610 phone anymore?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Richie -- you mean the "unlimited t-zones" right? That's what I got and last time I checked it worked (though it was/is slow). I haven't used it in a week or more though.

I have T-Mobile Unlimited T-Zones Pro and have no problem but my connection is slow. I wish I could have afforded the Ux50. Do you think that if I ever sent my UX40 in for a replacement that I might get a UX50 because of the production halt of the CLIE's by SONY?

You need a phone with Bluetooth no strings or wires attached. ;)

It's super simple to connect if you've got a BT phone -- literally all you do is launch the browser or email program from the UX and it'll auto-connect (assuming you've got the BT on and configured as your primary connection). Then you just browse or download email from the UX just as you would if you were using WiFi, and you never have to take your phone out of your pocket to do this. Same thing with text messaging.

I only really use it for POP email and sometimes to update my Avantgo, but it's great for that. Browsing is a little too slow for me to bother with.

PS there is no cable that will work with the UX that I know of, so unless you have a BT phone, it won't work.

I'm probably going to spring for the $5/mo T-Zones access, but I just wanted to know if anyone who still hasn't subscribed can still connect. If you can, then there must be some kind of connection setting that got screwed up on my phone that I need to fix. If you can't connect anymore, I'll assume that it's because the T-Zones access isn't free anymore.

I just got t-mobile and I though I needed the expensive $20 a month to surf with my UX, but I guess not. Thanks for saving me $15/mo. Is there any reason to get the more expensive plans though?

More speed -- WAP access is only 9.6k vs. around 50k for the GPRS $20/mo plan. At least that's my understanding.

WAP runs over GPRS which is the higher rate. 9.6 kbps is the rate for the circuit switched data transport mode.

Thus unless you are configured for circuit switched data you should be using the higher rate.

The free stuff is done. T-mobile has slowly, but surely turned off the free access for everyone. It's not your settings. Yes you can connect, but you won't get out on their gateway.

I wouldn't think all the ports are open on the $5 plan, as compared to the $19.99 plan, but I could be wrong. The again, you probably only want web (80) & E-mail (25 & 110).

As for speed...well your milage may vary, but I never attained anything over 26kbps.

What a bummer... :P Yeah, I usually just use it to check some non-graphic-intensive sites if I'm bored waiting somewhere, or if I need to look up something on Yahoo's yellow pages site. So the $5 plan is probably good enough. I don't have enough patience to do much surfing on the UX (even on wifi) because I have become very dependent on multiple-tabbed browsing (yay Firefox!) and surfing multiple sites/pages at once. :) It's just nice to have minimal web access for when I need directions or an address, or need to do some light surfing to kill time.

Thanks for letting me know it's not my settings.

The $20/mo plan can also filter all web content through a compression gateway, gzipping the HTML content and re-compressing the images. You need a browser capable of receiving gzipped pages for this to work of course. The good news is Opera, Mozilla and IE do this, however, not sure about NetFront. I will check it when my UX50 gets here tomorrow. Generally speaking, the $5 T-Zones is optimized for surfing WAP sites, as most content is cached on T-Mobiles servers, any other traffic does -not- receive priority routing like the $20 plan, plus AFAIK there is a MB limit on T-Zones (You pay over xx number of megabytes.)

Oddly enough, I'm going from a iBook / Nokia 3650 setup to a UX50 / Sony t68i setup. I will hardly ever make any voice calls from the phone, and it will likely stay in my bag or pocket all the time. When I do make voice calls I have a Jaber Headset, and I will be sending/receiving messages on my UX50.... It's a shame we will never see a UX-Series with integrated GSM/GPRS/Edge.... If that happened I would build a shrine to Sony and sacrifice small animals before it.

I guess my Local TMobile just got to closing the port 80. I can access pop-mail but cannot get on the web. (network timeout). Bummer. guess its time for the 19.99 plan. dam.

anyone got any tricks up their sleeves?

I'm still able to access the web using my Bluetooth phone. I think that if you signed up before they decided to close port 80, the you still have internet with T-Zones Pro.

No it seems about the same if not a little slower.
