The viewer and associated dictionaries/lexicons are available for an upgrade price of $9.95.

I will have to think about this one as I'm considering the switch to PPC in the future. It's time to start passing on Palm OS software upgrades, unless there is something really significant (Can't live without  )!

Erm... so what exactly is new about this MSDict apart from bloat...?

AH! DEAR GOD!

They de-uglified it!! AT LAST!
Jeez I think that's the first time anything noticable has changed about it :P

All the dictionaries apart from the Oxford ones have worked since ~MSDict 2.0, and the only reason to upgrade was for OS5 support and Oxford Dict support.
But they've actually added new features this time! This is a friggin' miracle! :D

The split screen is a nice upgrade.

Is there a color option on this version? I only get the pale blue. :( It would be nice if there is the orange one to match with my MythoFactory Sphinx VG/SB skin.

Personally I think it's a huge upgrade. I spent the last month evaluating absolutely every dictionary I could find. It came down to MSDict because I thought that their content was the best quality for the foreign language dictionaries, and SlovoEd because I thought that they had the best user interface, except that they had some annoying anomolies with how they handle the virtual graffiti area on a 320x480 device.

The one feature I really missed in MSDict, which had it been there would have shot it to the top of the pile on all counts, was a split screen interface. Well, here it is now, and my frustration over not being able to find a dictionary system that I was entirely happy with has gone away.

I moved the MsDict dictionary file into NX80 flash rom using jackflash. But MsDict viewer is unable to detect the dictionary. Any help?

I would try searching all dictionaries everywhere with the main prc file in RAM first, and after you've accessed them, then try moving it to Flash ROM. When I had a NX80V I kept MSDict in Flash with no problems.

V 6.0 of MSDict will NOT work in flashROM, says their tech supprt team! I tried but with no success; I kept getting a message about not enough memory.
It is a sweet release though.

V 6.0 of MSDict will NOT work in flashROM, says their tech supprt team!Well, isn't that progress? Very uncool . . . double the size of the app and render it incapable of residing in Flash! Where are programmer's heads, sometimes?

Reminds me of my peeve with packaging engineers: Did the designer of audio CD packaging ever try opening one? Did the designer of chocolate chip cookies (in those plastic trays) ever try sliding them back in? :D

The dictionary files should either stay in RAM or /Palm/Programs/MSDict or /Palm/Launcher.
The application can be moved into /Palm/Launcher or run from RAM.

The size of the application has grown a lot (okay - "bloated"), but the improvements to the user interface (especially on a T3) is a vast improvement.
It can handle the VG area and landscape mode.
It gives you various split pane view options and a few other features.

For those pushed for memory (ie. PDAs under 16Mb), you may want to stick with the older version of MSDict.

the application or the dictionary files? I keep the dictionary files on my memory stick so I'm not too worried about that but if it is the application file, I think I will stick with version 5.8.

I keep the MsDict.prc in ram. It doesn't work when I put the dictionary file in flash rom. However, it works when I put it in memory stick.

I still think that PocketLingo's American Heritage Dict and Thesaurus is better (and more authoritative!) than the pro dict that comes with MSDict. I wrote to MSDict people a while ago asking where they got the dictionary. They replied that they compiled the dictionary themselves. In other words. it's their own brand. I would rather trust a more established dictionary brand such as Webster or American Heritage. Another advantage of PocketLingo is that it has the flashcard program -- I have learned hundreds of words using it already in the last 18 months or so that I have had PocketLingo.
