View Full Version : UX50 first impressions

Well, I got my UX50 delivered Monday and I've had a chance to begin setting it up a bit over the week. Yes, Winexprt's loss is my gain, this is an incredible machine. I believe he moved to the TH55, I considered this also, but I travel a lot and the non-clamshell larger screen would end up damaged sooner.

First impression= INCREDIBLE!!!!

I upgraded from an NX80V that just died one day. No power, just dead, wouldn't charge, etc. When I opened it, I found a small piece of metal that had broked off the hinged CF cover. :( There is a thread over in the NX forum about the very same issue (with pictures of the piece that looked exactly like the one that fell out of my NX).

I installed zlauncher and used a nice winxp based theme to make my UX50 look mysteriously like my windows xp laptop. There were 2 guys in my class I was giving that worked for Palm a few years back and until they actually got into the preferences to verify, SWORE my UX was not running Palm OS.
:p

I played my old 'Once Upon A Time in Mexico' movie from the NX while flying home. The sound and video were noticeably better than on the NX. I was impressed and being able to flip up the screen like a laptop and watch the movie was cool. Some people on the plane were wondering how in the world I was able to fit a DVD in such a small DVD player. :D

I haven't noticed any speed change from my NX. This could be because I always used ZL to run all my programs off the memory card so that built in lag from launching the apps off the card was there on the NX too.

It is nice having the internal memory to run the programs off. Too bad I can't find a way to use the 16 meg of backup space on the UX for something productive but I'm sure I'll get used to using it for backing up. I'd just rather use the memory stick to backup and use that 16meg for things like books.

I got a 512 memory stick to put my mp3's and movies on. The default music app and Pocket Tunes found the mp3's right off with no hassles.

Course, this gem came with the EB50 extended battery. Yes, did I tell you I'm a lucky guy? :p

The wifi came right up at my house. I have my linksys wrt54 setup with a block of dhcp addresses and setup was a snap. I'd like to find a way to setup my laptop with a bluetooth usb dongle I got off ebay so I can plug my laptop into the hotel highspeed internet and be able to access the laptop via bluetooth from the UX to bridge the highspeed to my UX. I'm sure there's a way to do this, I just haven't had time to research this. Now, if the hotel has wifi (more and more do every day) the UX50 is set.

Oh, did I say how cool this device is???

I was apprehensive about the landscape mode, but once I got it, I don't know how I got by with portrait mode. Yes, I'm off to the codediver thread a lot lately. :)

Oh, and, I NEVER used the keyboard on my NV70 or NX70 or NX80. I use it all the time on my UX50. I considered the keyboard when deciding to go with a UX50 or TH55. Since I never used it before, I was REALLY leaning toward the TH55 until I was able to find a UX50 still at the local compusa I could play with. Plus, they had a TH55 right next to it. It just felt too light and flimsy for my needs. All I could see was me snapping the larger screen on the road. Sure it has better battery life, but suprisingly I prefer using my UX50 with the exteded battery attached. It feels larger and sturdier than without the battery. And when watching movies the extra weight helps it sit better on my airline tray table. It's total hands free movie viewing baby! I had to how the NX80 to watch a movie in landscape mode. I need my hands free to open those little bottles of scotch. :p

Anyhow, I was like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting on this to arrive. Now I'm like a kid in a candy store playing with it. :D

Thanks Winexprt for making this happen, and for taking such good care of this UX50.

Here is how you setup apps to go widescreen on the UX50. I just used AvantGo as an example.

How did you get used to UX50's small screen when NX80's screen's nice and big?

I acutally moved from UX50 to TH55 for this reason (i have both now). UX50's a powerful device..but not a good device if it's not plesant to look at.

I have both the UX50 and TH55 as well. I much prefer the UX to the TH. It took me a while to get used to the UX screen, but now I am used to it and love it. The only reason I bought the TH was my wife's SJ33 died and I had a Best Buy PSP. After some "discussions" :D with Best Buy, I upgraded for $100.

How did you manage to do that? I mean there is any .avi or .mpg player for UX50 ?

Also you have probably 1GB memory stick? Wondering how much cost such one?

Could you be so kind and write me few words of what is Avantgo used for? I heard some comments that it is very good product but I completely don't know what is it used for...

I actually downloaded the movie off a nice clie movie irc channel. It was created from a dvd by ripping it to a hard drive and then using the clie movie converter software to shrink it down. The entire movie is around 140 meg. You can make them even better quality at a larger size. I think they are a Quicktime
compatible format. Like I said earlier, you can convert them to a better quality, but the size gets bigger. On the small screens, the quality used (roughly 140meg for ~2 hour movie) is perfect.

I have a 512meg memory sitck at present. I'd like to get a one gig stick, but I might wait a while for the 2 gig sticks to drop in price. Currently, you can get a new sandisk 2 gig memory stick pro for around $330 off ebay. I've been watching and the prices have gone from 370 down to 335 in less than 2 weeks on ebay. The one gigs are still going for over 200 so I'll just wait. It seems dumb to spend over 200 for a one gig when you can get 512 meg sticks for less than 90 if you look hard enough.

BTW, I have been playing with wifiles, this thing is great.

Now I need to do a search on 'backup' to see which is best for the UX50. I've already seen some posts that praise backupman so time to search. :)

Clie movie irc channel... I have been searching for something like that but didn't find. If you could send me private message concerning where to find such one I would be very thankfull.

How to convert movie by myself? For example I have movie 700mb and I would like to convert it to Clie format and for clie screen, how to do that?

Ok i searched whole forum and found out how to do that. Pretty good results. I used Winmpg to convert avi to mpg, but this program doesn't have advanced functions, such as audio compression level also the lowest fps to chose is 23fps i read that 15fps for Clie should be ok.

Could someone recommend any better program to convert avi to mpg?

Evilecho, the best backup I ever used on the UX was the PowerSave backup. Restores EVERYTHING back onto the UX50 EXACTLY as you had it.

Think of it this way...you have the 16 meg Powersave backup space already on your UX50 anyway...so why not use it? It isn't like you can use the space for anything else. ;)

Any other solution?

I highly suggest you get aquainted with the search feature on this site. There is a TON of info on exactly what you just asked already written in the forums.

AvantGo is used for viewing webpages on your Clie. They explain everything a lot better than I can though. :D

Not better or worse. They are two totally different kinds of programs.

Just installed what??

And if you're referring to AvantGo, there is an option to put all your channels on your MS to save space. :)

i have a nice update, last week a little serendipity occured, my wifes verizon lg vx4400 phone fell out of her car at softball practice. It got run over and the lcd broke. Interesting though, the phone still worked, you just could not see the screen. I moved my lg to her and convinced Verizon to let me 'early upgrade' my phone to the new motorola V710. This sweet thing is the first bluetooth phone offered by verizon.

I read a lot and did much reading up on the V710. I of course setup the 'free' wap access on the phone. I guess it's nice if you like text web. But, I now have the ULTIMATE setup, I just open my trusty UX50 and connect to verizons speedy 1x wireless network via my v710. I read verizon likes to charge for access to their high speed 1x network, but most of the time the 'national access - minutes only use' feature option for high speed access is enabled on their cellphones. I setup, and yes, I have minutes only access! :D

I've tried talking to verizon CR's about this option and maybe one in 20 has any clue what this is.

So now I can surf the web from anywhere on my UX50 via bluetooth.

Oh, and if i'm in an area that does not support the verizon high speed 1x network, they also have fallback basic dialup, or i can just dial into my system.

This is by far the coolest tech setup I could ever ask for!

Now I don't have to run the wifi sniffer on my UX50 when traveling and get the "please provide a credit card number to access and get charged out the butt rates for our wifi network".

Man I LOVE this bluetooth.

evilecho, are you using the VFS to store other programs? See this thread and you'll really love you're UX (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29231&highlight=AliasExt). I wasn't ecstatic when I got my UX. It was my 4th or 5th Clie and I had gotten very familiar with graffiti. Additionally, all that space that I couldn't use really bugged me. Now I'm dancing on the ceiling and having a ball.
