My CLIE 610 died and I need to replace it ASAP. I'm sure you'll
think I'm nuts, but I don't need web access, wireless, a camera, or
even a MP 3 player (this last might get used if present, but is not a
must). Color and high resolution are a must.

A faster processor i.e. OS 5 would be nice as I use lifebalance, but
I use graffiti and a hack similar to middle caps hack and suspect
that it would be a large pain having to use two graffiti strokes for
each capital letter. Since I can't use this hack with OS 5, I'm thinking of either the SJ 30 or the T665 (and I can't wait for the T665's replacement).

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks for your time.

Scott

First off, OS5 still uses Graffiti, though you're right that hacks won't work. If speed is the attribute you seek most, go OS5 which means Tungsten or NX at this point.

Next step down is a T665, if you can find one. IMO, this wins the award for best value.

SJ30 will be slower (33mhz processor) but is also an exceptional value, and your least expensive alternative.

Good luck with your decision.

the only major speed difference i think you'll notice between t665 and sj30 is when copying/moving to or running apps off of the ms.  the sj30 also doesn't have a polyphonic speaker or mp3 out of the box.  however, battery life of sj30 is far superior, and i prefer its more pocket-friendly form factor.

The SJ30 is, IMO is better because of the excellent battery life. For me, money wasn't an object, but size and battery life was. Mp3 is nice, but if you don't need it, it might be an expensive waste.

Every member who owns a T665 (myself included) raves about them.

Exactly wnm. The only reason you rave about them is because you own it...its called BIASED OPINION

But with the SJ30, it's different. It is better for the price. Some people don't need fancy add ons like enhanced ir and a polyphonic speaker.

Isn't this a biased opinion also?

For my own use, I would not hesitate before buying a Sony-refurbished NR70 (the one without the camera) - which should be well under $300 on ebay (check seller feedback to find a reputable dealer).

I have found that the longer screen to be the biggest difference between any two models of PDAs.

Since the clamshell design makes a case unnecessary, the NR70 is actually narrower and thinner than other PDAs in their cases...

See my review of the NR70 in the Review section of this site.

The 665 arrived this morning fedex. However:

--the up down button is terrible (which I knew) PLUS
--the jog dial button is terrible vs the one I had in the CLIE 610. It requires too much force to turn. Thus for me, the 665 is useless and is going back.

Anyone know what the jog dial is like on the S30 or the NR 70 vs the 665?

Thanks.

The placement of the Jog wheel is better on the SJ30 (compared to t665) and moves easily.

The jog dial on the SJ30 is excellent. It requires just enough force to turn so it won't spin accidentally.

Scott, a very important consideration for you: How important is the memory stick and the speed of it's access?

This alone will determine for you whether you should get SJ30 or T655. That's the first thing I ask when someone asks me which unit to recommend among the Sonys @ Best Buy.

If you are going to store alot of things on the Memory stick (especially pictures to show on the gorgeous screens of SJ30 and the T655), I'd skip the SJ30 and go for the T655. SJ30's memory stick access speed is far to slow for heavy duty usage.

On the other hand, if you don't plan to store much if at all on the memory stick, then I say save $100 and get much better battery life through the SJ30.
