I started to take a run and tripped on a stick taking a pretty good fall. Unfortunately when i fell my 70v was in my front pocket. After the fall it still works but the screen has streaks and a big bad spot - digitalizer works and theres not even a scratch on the case.. go figure

Has anyone done anything similar like this and got yours replaced with the extended warranty?

Thanks :/

Sorry to hear about your mishap:(!

You have to read the warranty to see whether it's covered it or not. Then your next step will be to try and convice someone that you deserve a replacement. The fact that there is no apparent physical damage is encouraging. Just tell them this is what happened when you turned the unit on.

Good Luck!

thanks for the reply-

i got a "carry in replacement plan" but the more i look at it the more it sounds like they want to send it in for repairs, not "replace" it :( - the salesman made it clear i would get it working in the end, tho he never promised i can just carry it in for an on the spot replacment.. but convincing them to replace/fix it seems to be my biggest problem

oh well.. here i am trying to fit my most essential programs from my 128mb stick to my old 8mb palm viix :/

Good luck. If you're with Best Buy, damage to the screen is not covered. Don't waste your time trying to return/exchange it unless you think can argue your way through. Screens don't break unless it's abouse and that's not covered in the warranty.

where did you buy it exactly? because yes damage to the screen isn't covered, but some places actually say that its only not covered if there is physical damage to the unit, like if there is a bullet hole or its cracked. but if the screen still works but there is just spots and stuff there is a chance that you could argue your way out.

i know that at circuit city you might be able to get away with it. if you got it from circuit city i can tell you how you should approach it since i work there.

i bought it at CompUSA with the "carry-in replacement plan"

theres not a scratch on the thing anywhere - the display works in most areas but there are some streaks that lead to one big dead spot - the stylus works everywhere on the screen so obviously its just the display part(it even works where the screen is dead) - no dents or anything.. its almost looks as if someone hit it from the inside b/c the back of the screen hasn't a scratch

any ideas?

thanks!

edit: the display itself isn't scratched either i didn't mean to give an impression.. the streaks make it look like it kind of tho..

I've had good luck with CompUSA's warranty. I believe its covered in their plan.

if it's a compUSA warranty...it basically covers any type of damage...whether to the screen or internally...so it would cover yours...i think bestbuys allows them to attempt to repair it...and covers only internal type problems...this has been discussed previously if you do a search...so...so far the best warranty is the compUSA one....even covers for theft...

thank you!

one last question..

do you think its at all logical to buy and replace the screen myself.. seeing as this warranty is a 1 time deal and i've got over a year still to break it(again).. or is that not even possible to do?

i don't know if you can do that...maybe someone else can comment on that...but what you can do is use your replacement warranty...and when they give you the new clie...get another replacement warranty on that....of course it will cost you another 99 bucks...but you have to weigh the benefits to trading it in now...or if whatever is currently wrong something you can deal with

you can do that? hmm.. i bet a new screen is atleast $100 by itself - any others know about that?

I think by the time you spend the time to find a replacement screen, it may cost the same as a CUSA warranty. Plus you might botch it up too.

A la carte parts are pretty expensive.

So I'd suggest you invoke your CUSA warranty and get a new PDA. After all, that's what their sold for.

The bad thing about the CUSA warranty is that, like you said, they're a 1-time thing. Once used, you have to buy a new warranty to cover the replacement PDA if you want one.

The BestBuy warranty however, allows you multiple PDA's, depending on the reason for breakage.

Good luck!!

but you think I can actually buy a new warranty for 99 bucks every time i replace it????

that sounds like a pretty good deal for us and bad for them! (how many palms can you buy for under $100? the zire? lol!)

thanks :p

I'm not positive, but it seems someone posted in another thread that Sony wanted about $260 to replace the screen. If you have to pay, I don't think $99 is a bad price.

YES. Definitely. That's the normal full price for the 2 year CompUSA TAP (Technology Assurance Program). They'll gladly sell you a new TAP.

You can buy a new warranty for 99 bucks every time you replace a PDA.

Good for us? I think so.

Bad for them? I don't think so. It's a cash cow for them. Percentage wise, I think they sell more TAP's than warranty claims.

I only buy their one year plan now days cause something always happens to my Clies well before even the first year is up.

I got a one year plan for first time (N710), but used the plan about one month afterwards because a friend dropped it, cracking the screen. I got the N760 as a replacement though CompUSA's plan. Even though the one year plans were only $40, like an idiot, I got the 2 year plan on the N760 ($100).

Then the battery went bad on the N760 about 8 months later, so I got the NR70V through the plan, paying the difference. But now I wised up and decided to get the one year plan instead. Unfortunately, the cost of the one year plan went up to $70. Oh well.

I was loving my NR, but about 4 months later, the damn hinge got really loose. I thought about fixing it with a screw driver myself, but then the NX had come out, so I asked them to reaplce the NR for the NX and they said no problem. Got another $70 one year plan on the NX as well.

I'm now super careful with the NX, opening the clamshell near the hinge to minimise force on the hinge, but I think it will go again eventually. Infact, I'm counting on it doing so well before October, when my plan's year is up so I can upgrade to the latest and the greatest.

yes you can do that....there is nothing that says you can't get another warranty on the replacement pda...in the end...trust me compUSA wins too.....they don't do this without thinking about the bottom line for themselves....i had a clie N610 and had the warranty...well i had a problem with mine about a month ago...so i brought it back in...guess what N610 is discontinued and the 615 which replaced it ...which was then replaced by the t665...were all discontinued as well...leaving the NR series which was discontinued...leaving the only thing left they could give me...remember you get "equal or better" which is outlined in the contract...and since they were out of the nx60...they gave me the nx70.....i definitely lucked out...but the point is....i was able to pay 99 dollars and get the warranty on the value of the nx70....so theoretically you can keep trading your pda in and get this warranty..provided....it still exists....

comment about the best buy warranty...if you read some of the previous threads....best buy is cracking down on just replacing your pda....b/c it actually doesn't say they'll upgrade or replace your pda outright....it says in the contract they reserve the right to fix it...and if not then (probably after weeks) replace it...also they don't cover most physical damages...like the screen....there is actually a website solely on the bad service at bestbuy...which you can find on a thread here

just make sure to read the contract....b/c the salesman will always try to get you to buy it b/c it benefits them....

yea on that best buy warranty thing, circuit city does the same thing, they technically only cover malfunctions, and nothing else. so its like having an extended manufactures warranty, unlike compusa who apparently will cover absolutely anything.
