That sounds like a step in the wrong direction. It wouldn't be a Clie - it would be a Trojan PDA!

Why would they have a CLIE with the Symbian OS? They already have smartphones that do that (P800, P900, P910)
As for PPC... IDK, Microsoft has lifted some of the restrictions on modifying the PPC OS so a CLIE PPC would be interesting, but it wouldn't be the same.

That is not what I would consider to be a NEWS article. It was just someone wondering aloud what might happen in the future and it was based off of no hard facts. Instead it was based off of pure speculation and some third-hand "he said, she said" information that may or may not be accurate. I personally would not waste too much time contemplating such articles.
It is now a headlines news article over brighthand.com!!! stating further the real reason behind the Sony's decision to halt producing Clies in the US.
A Sony Clie with Pocket PC OS is cool though, but Clie has to maintain its 320x320, 320x480 resolutions or even more.
Cheers!
And followed by 1src, a featured news article on 1src's homepage....Oh well.
Cheers!
Just reported this in the News section. Even if it's speculation, it's still something to speculate about. ;) Notice that the Engadget article has a hint of sarcasm in its article too so anyway, we're just reporting news as they happen.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
Yeah, Sony can kick HP's butt. In a wild anime dream. But that would require Godzilla and Mothra to join their side and...oops, there goes the alarm clock! Sony will never learn that most people will NOT buy items that are filled with proprietary parts and technology, even if those parts and technology are better than the industry standards.
Last year Sony dropped in sales of Clies while HP sales of PocketPCs went up. I don't think Sony can even kick its own butt at this point. There is a LONG list of items they have released over the years that were innovative but never caught on in the consumer market, including Beta Vision, Bookman, Clies, etc.
BTW, the Clie was not their first try at a PDA. Several years ago they released a large PDA that featured a GEOS(?) OS. Guess what happened to it?

Knowing Sony, IF they come out with a PPC CLIE, I think that it will come with a VGA screen

Would Microsoft EVEN let them chop up their system to even allow Sony to give it that proprietary standard (non-standard) twist they know and love? =/

I hope Microsoft makes Sony stick to the standard Windows Mobile APIs, and forces them so that it has to play WMAs, WMV, etc... none of this transcoding to ATRAC crap

Lots of iPaq owners are not very happy about the new iPaq's and the fact that HP will not be releasing Windows Mobile SE for their older units. There is a large petition somewhere that has alot of signatures already asking HP to reverse their decision about the updates.

If Sony got into the PPC business, I bet they could make something even "sexier" than HP's 19xx and 41xx series.

Speaking of PPCs... I saw one of the new iPaqs at Staples today, and they are tiny! They look better in person than when you see them in a magazine online, etc
One of the reasons Sony gave for its announcement in June was declining sales of handhelds. According to the new report, this wasn't actually the reason. Instead, it is supposedly unhappy with the direction PalmSource is taking the Palm OS. No details were given about what exactly Sony executives are supposed to be unhappy about.
In other words, PalmSource was forcing Sony to use standard APIs, and they couldn't mod the OS as much (that can be a good thing or a bad thing)

Wow..... This could be the final death nail to the Palm OS if Sony went to the PPC OS.
Of course Palm would survive a few years but it wouldn't be the same. It was Sony's design and new features to the Palm OS platform that made me leave the PPC in the first place. It had everything I wanted in a PDA back before ANYONE had them built in the PDA. Thumb board, camera, HiRes+... If they Go PPC it will be the push that will send me flying to the other side..since it stands now... there's nothing in the Palm world that fancies me. But if Sony goes Symbian I think it will be a total Flop!

Hmmm... I just saw one too. I think it was the rz1715. Very tiny indeed, but it's just too "basic". I guess, if you were strictly looking for an electronic organizer, this model would be ok. The rx3000 Series looks kinda like HP's old Jornadas. I like the h6315, I think it may be better than the treo 600 'cause of all the wireless connectivity it contains. The hx4705, well I haven't seen one yet in person (is it out yet?), but it looks huge! I wonder how the battery life on that thing is...

LOL. Is that good or bad? Anyway, if Sony does return, but with Windows Mobile, I would be upset.

I am always amazed by Sony's innovation. So my answer is: that is actually a GOOD news. We will see more innovation on the PPC side that most of PPC licensees are not able to do yet! Long live Clie!!!
Cheers!

Don't forget that Sony invested multi millions in Palm Source, maybe before the split, I can't remember. So I don't see them dumping Palm's forever. If this rumor is true I think Sony will work both sides like that other company did, forgot their name. And if they do, I don't see them going with PPC. I think they'll go with Symbian and smart phones. They've seen the success of the Treo 600.

Yes, indeed. Sony invested million of dollars to PalmSource and there was no word about what happened to it and yet Sony discontinued its sales in US and Europe while continuing its Clies in Japan. However, as claimed in Brighthand, it maybe true that Sony disliked the way that PalmSource is handling the Palm OS and will opt to take Pocket PC or Symbian instead. None in the PPC or Symbian has taken over the success of Treo 600 yet but some dubbed the Motorola MPX as potential killer of Treo 600. And this is where Sony may get into, a Sony Clie PPC smartphone in addition to their P900 smartphones. This is just an speculation, BTW ;)
Cheers!

Wow, I have to be honest ... With Pocket PC's now supporting 480X640 displays and seeing the new Intel 624Mhz chip is out, it would be very interesting to see what Sony could do to the existing PPC or SYMBIAN OS ... Sony has always been great at making things better, I love Palm OS, but I think that I would jump fence as well if Sony were to come out with an amazing device. The only concern that I have is wondering if Sony has figured out how to keep the screws in their devices, I just lost another one!!

Again...for all those that don't know. BLAZING CPU speed on your handheld = BLAZING battery drain. :D
Anything that requires speeds approaching one gigahertz on a PDA, I would much rather do on my laptop. :D

Lol, yah.. this is scary! Haha, my computer is only 800MHz! Pretty soon my PDA is going to be faster than my computer! Lol.
But battery life is getting better, so it should be able to support faster CPUs. I mean, compare the battery life of the TH55 to that of the T665. Big difference I believe. And the TH55 has a faster processor.

I would be really disappointed if Sony went to the Pocket PC market. I spent a lot of money on memory sticks and palm OS applications... so that's a matter of upgrading my handheld to a Palm (to take advantage of all the software I purchased) or buy a Sony PPC (to take advantage of the memory sticks I purchased).
Difficult decisions.

Faster and more importantly a smarter processor.

it is mentioned in this link here (http://www.kakaku.com/bbs/Main.asp?ItemCD=003032&MakerCD=76&Product=CLIE+PEG%2DTH55+%28B%29&CategoryCD=0030)
however, even i am beginning to think that it is a HOAX, though...
but seriously, the price of the TH55 have already dropped to new levels, and i just cant help but wonder if a new one is just over the horizon

Everyone should just get together and make Palm PC :) A pda with the PALM os and the power of a Pocket PC. Im very sure everyone here has got to admit that Pocket PCs are more powerful, but their software package sux.
