View Full Version : Converting videos to Movie Player format

When I convert a mpg file to clie format, it only records about the first 15 seconds, and then the video doesn't move on... as if it freezes although the video keeps going until the total original lenght of the video. Anyone with this problem?
Can I just copy the raw .mpg files to MS? if so, in which folder?
thanx in advance...

Try to open your video with a program called 'VirtualDub'; it will automatically correct any errors in the mpeg stream. Then you will be able to save the file as an .avi. Chose any video codec you desire and pcm for audio (also enable 'full processing mode' for both video and audio).
I personally first transcode my video to DivX 5 before using the Image Converter program. I've never tried to copy raw mpeg to my Clié.
Hope that helps!

You cannot put "raw" mpegs on the clie...clie reads a proprietary form of MPEG-4. also, intruder, I have no idea how you got image converter to convert a divx. For me, it will only convert .avi and .mpeg files encoded mpeg1, which means divx (mpeg4) doesn't work. The virtual dub is a good suggestion though. D-fens, have you tried other video files? Sometimes this can just be isolated to the particular file you are trying to encode.

same here - D-Fens claims to be able to encode divx 5 to the clie with image converter. How the .... do you do that. I also have to convert from divx to mpg1 for image converter to accept the file.
I would be cool to be able to do it directly from divx :)

@nextyoyoma, skizo:
Hm, I've tried that with a lot of different video files. DivX definitely works for me:
Image Converter accepts three file formats as the input - Quicktime, Mpeg (1 and 2!) and Avi. Since Avi is just the container for the actual video- and audio-stream (no matter what codec used), DivX and any other codec that is installed on the computer will work just fine; Image Converter doesn't complain, either. I thought there was no problem at all...
I actually tried that on two computers, recently with a program called 'DVDx' (you can find that one on www.doom9.org). I converted a whole DVD movie with that program to Avi using DivX Pro 5.03 for video (Home Theater preset) and PCM for audio. I could have also chosen Mpeg, but the reason why I don't do this is simply speed! I then loaded the file with Image Converter and chose my local hard drive as the output location, not a memory stick (you can later manually copy the files with MSImport). With medium quality, I ended up with two files, one that was about 100MB and another with about 60MB since Image Converter seems to automatically split the files into 100MB chunks. The conversion to Mqv took about 60 minutes with a original movie duration of 80 minutes (on a P4 1.8Ghz)
I hope this explanation works for you

One important thing to note:
If the input .avi has got MP3 for audio instead of PCM, Image Converter will convert the file, but later on my Clié crashes immediately when playback begins. That might perhaps be the reason for you not being able to convert your movies...
You could try to re-save the DivX with VirtualDub (direct stream copy for video and full recompress for audio, using PCM) and then load them up with Image Converter.

When I try to convert divx files i get the error message for image converter "selected files format not supported". I doesn't even start. Maybe I need new codecs or something. The files play just fine on my pc though.
Thanks for your help!!!

I also have never gotten Divx files to convert. But you can run raw .MPG files on the NX. You can place .MPG files in
/MSSONY/MOML0001/ and rename them to MOV*****.MPG. (The stars being a number, and ther must be five numbers). It dosn't always work as good as the files from Image Converter. Depending on the resolution and framerate, some files won't work at all, and some skip alot. But, it is possible.

ok if cbulock has the same problem, it would be really interesting to find out whick config D-fens has set up.

when you run the mpg through virtualdub, compress video to divx and audio to MSADPCM formats then sound and video will work thru image converter.

Ok mrbjg4 so the problem is the sound and not the movie itself. Ergo imageconverter will only accept pcm audio.
Thanks!!! I'll try that!!!

@skizo: Well, if you would have read my posting more precisely, you would have come to the conclusion that I have also used Pulse Code Modulation as the audio codec like mrbjg4 has... :D
Never mind
..the only difference is that image converter accepts the file but later the movie player crashes on my Clié, but perhaps that's because of my mp3 codec being special or something (ACM, original Fraunhofer IIS, but some special build).

BTW, does it now work for you?

Nope - image converter still does not accept the file. It still only acepts raw mpg, avi1 and images. No divX!
In the readmefiles for image converter it is written that it only accepts avi1 and not avi2. Maybe thats the reason.
D-fens must have some kind of special codec that cheats IC into thinking it is reading Avi1.

Virtual dub has worked like a dream for me. I spent hours downloading some cool vids to put on my Clie and was very disappointed that Image Converter wouldn't accept most of them, and the few that did go in crashed within seconds. But after opening them in Virtual Dub and saving them back out (using Divx 5 as the video encoder and uncompressed PCM for the audio), they went in to Image Converter with no problem and played all the way through.
BTW, for Clie users with hyperactive kids, enjoy a nice evening in a non-fast-food restaurant by having one of the kids' favorite cartoons in your Clie. They'll sit still as long as the thing is playing.

Spent a few hours converting a divx file so that it now has uncompressed audio. It now works like a charm. Thanks!!
All my divxfiles must have compressed audio - strange!!??

I realize the problem now, Divx 5 works fine, it's Divx 4 that won't work. All my movies were Divx 4, but if I run them thru Virtual Dub, and set the sound to uncompressed, they work great in Image Converter! Thanks for the help everyone.

same for me no problems after virtualdub, but audio is in layer3 before vdub process to MSADPCM.
Good luck
