I am having some trouble with the audio player on my 665.

I have some mp3 files on my computer, when I put them on the memory stick some won't play. This I can understand as it says the file is protected or does not support the copyright control or the file is corrupted. What I don't understand is that they play on my computer in winamp.

Also I can't seam to get any songs off a cd and on to the memory stick in mp3 format, I can only seam to get them in atrac3 format which is no good to me since I'm not using a "magic gate" stick.

I have a sony computer so I use the SonicStage software and I put the ms in the computer to transfer mp3s to my 665.

I would just really like to know how to get cds in mp3 format so I can start listening to them off my 665 (one of the main reasons why I bought it).

Please help me

Dont Use Sonic gate software to load files to your memory stick.
Firstly check the file extension of the file u are playing in winamp is it really .mp3 and then sony's cd comes with a software with ms export in it use that instead to load songs like u are copying to another disk and probably that should work. this all is mentioned in the manual too just take a look once.
even i had problems loading songs in the memory stick but followed the manual and it worked.
Try it out
good luck

yeah
just put the clie in the cradle first and turn on ms import from the clie, and open ms export on the computer. then just click and drag mp3s onto export and click install. it'll automatically get installed in the right folder.

But I still can't get the songs off a cd and into mp3 format. How do you do that

I just open MSImport from the Clie and a folder automatically opens on my PC. Then I just drag my MP3s into the Clie folder that opened. Done deal.

There are various programs for converting a CD to MP3. Personally I use Music Match Jukebox (which has a free version although I registered mine). Real Player also has a free version that allows you to convert from a CD I believe. There are also plugins available for Windows Media Player. Also, there are many other programs that also do what you want. Just search for "convert MP3" or something along that lines and you should be fine.

Hope this helps.

One option with the mp3 just download songs from kazza. it has almost all the songs online in its database and u might not need to convert it or buy cd's for songs.

I think that was a big issue with NAPSTER, which was typically the same thing, I think they called it stealing or some such thing.

What is the difference between the regular memory stick and the magic gate memory stick. I heard that inorder to play mp3s you need to use ONLY the MAGIC GATE memory chip. Is this true????

I've only used Lexar memory sticks and my MP3s play just fine. You need Magic Gate for ATRAC (I believe)...

I've never had problems converting CDs to MP3 format. I've been using MusicMatch and its pretty straightforward. No tweaking necessary. Then I use MS-Import to copy them to the \PALM\MSAUDIO folder of the memory stick.

I hope you solve your problems and get to enjoy your units hassle-free.

stay cool.

yes, mp3s work fine on any memory stick,
u only need magic gate if u want to use atrac which is supposedly better.

Atrac would have to be quite a bit better to justify the difference in cost between Magic Gate and a standard memory stick.

with the magic gate stick you record in atrac format, Atrac can record at a lower bit rate and sound as good as a higher bit rate on the memory stick, thus fitting more music on the magic gate.

A 128 Mb Magic Gate memory stick costs $99 on Amazon.com. The last Lexar standard 128 Mb MS I purchased cost me $37.99 after rebate.

Unless I can fit almost triple the music (and no quality loss) with Atrac then I can with MP3 I just don't see the sense of buying Magic Gate.

I hears in another thread that if you sample at less than 96kbps on a MP3, the PDA can't play it.  At least that's for the SJ33.

I also don't like the magicGate/ATRAC approach.  From what I've read, Sony's got it setup like a checkout system. So you make the song unavailable elsewhere when it's on your MS.

Napster was not stealing but rather a copyright issue. Because you don't steal something with a value that causes losses to the company, but copy it. So the only way for them to figure out how much they lost is to find out how many copies have been made.
If you don't want to rip your CDs you could just download the song. Both is illegal or at least what the Music Producing Companies make you believe.

The Mp3 must be in 44.1 Khz i guess. Must be on the forum somewhere ...

Atrac is perfect for selling Music.

Ripping mp3's from CDs is not illegal if you use them for you own personal entertainment, you have already bought the rights to that song so as long as you don't sell/trade/give them away it's not illegal.
