Has anyone had luck with the NZ90, WiFi, and the Netgear MR314 wireless router? I can't get it to work. Any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with that router, but I found that on Cisco gear you have to disable "short preamble" to make it work with the Clie WiFi card.

Well, not an answer ... more of an invitation for laughter from those that know but I have a related question ...

... I am suffering from massive bodily damage after smacking my head against the wall for 3 days since buying my NZ-90 ...

OKAY ... I bought a wi-fi card and went down to Starbucks. I managed to connect to the 'network' follwoing the instructions that were floating about there (obviously posted by some tech-wise staffer). Clicked onto NetFront 3.0 ... wait ... linked to the service provider ... username, password ... link ... to Yahoo and checked my email (with me so far?) ... NO PROBLEMS!

Mt problem comes at home when I tried to the the same / similar with the Wireless LAN at home ... turned off computer, turned on computer ... tried different settings on NZ-90 ... I CONNECT to the 'Network' but can't get any further after using NetFront ... Xiino OR PocketLink. I get no internet, nothing.

Obviously I'm missing something ... if I was using my home computer I would start the dialup connection ... automatic username and password authentication and then BING ... onto the Net.

PLEASE ... what am I missing here? It's probably something simple but it's driving me MAD ... and my head hurts !

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Nick in Hong Kong.

For starters, there are many-many threads and discussions on wireless.

Wireless HotSync Info
Listed below are some common problems and highlights:

(combined for future reference)

The primary pc name has to be !!(double exclamation points) only!

Only works with the long preamble.

The Sony PEGA-WL100 is the ONLY card that works!

Use static/manual settings for IP and DNS addresses

Leave power save unchecked

Use infrastructure mode when on a LAN, even for the wireless HotSync

May not necessarily work on all Wireless Access Points, does work with Linksys, Dlink, Apple's Airport, and some others.

You can use an SSID of ANY.

Windows XP firewall can block a wireless HotSync.

First step is to get to connect with the LAN, then try to get the WAN side to work(gateway and DNS addressing)

Right click on the HotSync Manager Icon in the PC's system tray and select network as a valid HotSync method in addition to Local USB.

Lots of patience...

The following info was supplied by Xaositek:

network = ; wireless lan
go to details
if you haven't added a profile do so now.

ProfileName: (whatever)
Network ID (SSID): Any (case sensitive)

Go to advanced setup and turn off "PowerSaveMode""

Go to your hotsync program
go to menu
"Modem Sync"
set to "Network"
under LANSync, make sure its set to LANSync

Primary PC Setup
Primary PC Name: !! ;-- another must have this way
Primary PC Address: (the IP address of the computer to hotsync too)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (unless different from Admin)

Click ok

Go to the main hotsync screen
Click on the "Modem" box
then choice your network as "Wireless LAN"
DO NOT ENTER A PHONE NUMBER

Larry ...

Thanks for that.

I have now managed to : -

1. Get onto the Internet from Starbucks.

2. Connect to the 'wireless network' from home.

3. Hotsync wirelessly from home.

MY problem is that I don't know how to connect to the INTERNET from home. Okay, I can get the connection to the LAN but then what ... whenever I click on the browser nothing happens ...

When and where would I be entering my username and password (the one that the PC automatically sends to my ISP when I log on via the PC).

I've looked around the forums, seen some similar questions but can't find an answer.

Thanks for your time. Appreciated.

Nick,

Did you have to join or sign up for internet access from Starbucks? I have been looking at Boingo for wifi access on the road, but it's expensive.

Does anyone know of a "sniffer" for hotspots that would work on the clie with wireless card?

Thanks

Nick,

You didn't mention how your home PC is connecting to the internet. If you are using a dialup, you might have to enable ICS(internet connection sharing) or create a bridge in Windows XP.

You may have to go static settings in the Clie. The gateway and DNS are what take you to the internet. The gateway is the IP of the router, the same IP you would use to access the router's settings from your PC browser. The DNS addresses are those of your ISP.

The only sniffer is the clie itself, use these settings:

WEP= none

SSID= blank or any

IP & DNS= auto

Powersavemode= unchecked

Infrastructure Mode

Will Boingo work with Palm! When I looked, it only supported PPC.

Larry - Thanks for your help. I'll keep trying ... but yes, I am using a dialup to connect to the internet through the wireless LAN ... I'll keep fiddling with the stuff you mentioned.

Gary - in Hong Kong, my ISP has about 200 listed hotspots ... Starbucks, other coffee places, malls, airport, etc. They charge their own customers HK$3 for 10 minutes (that's less than 50 US cents ... 1US$ = 7.8HK$) ... when I set the wireless LAN's Profile Name to my "outdoor mode", connect, and go to NetFront, it automatically goes to the log on page ... username and password and I'm in.

Larry's advice on IP's and DNS' will keep me going until the football (soccer) comes on the TV ... Liverpool vs Bolton ... not mean much to you guys in the US? ;-p

Cheers again.

Nick,

Haven't followed English football in years, but I was born there and used to like Arsenal and Totenham Hotspur.

Enjoy the game.

I used to have a bumper sticker - "Give blood, play rugby"

Thanks!

I have the NZ90, Sony's WiFi and the MR315 from Netgear.
It all works great...

Some tips:

First make sure you installed the WiFi drivers correctly.
If you did you should have a new SERVICE called WIRELESS LAN under NETWORK PREFERENCES. Select it.
Go into DETAILS, create a new PROFILE

- make sure that Sony card is set to INFRASTRUCTURE and not adhoc

- I think that the SSID can be set to ANY (I have it set to exactly the ESSID that I specified in my router (On the MR314 Admin web site go to ADVANCED > WIRELESS)

- I also have WEP key encryption enabled. If your MR314 has WEB disabled then set it to NONE on the CLIE.

- I'm assuming that your netgear router acts as both DNS (IP adddress directory) and DHCP (hands out ip addresses to devices) (check that by going to ADVANCED > LAN on your MR314 admin web site)

in which case you would set the clie to
(under the ADVANCED Settings )
IP ADDRESSS - AUTO
DNS ADDRESS - AUTO
PowerSave - Enabled <- not really necessary but saves power and does work with netgear

- One final thing to check on the MR314. I enabled filtering of MAC addresses (pretty good idea actually) it makes sure that only the network cards you specify can connect to your wireless router (this way some guy walking past your street with a Toshiba e740 PPC will not get an ip address and access to your home network automatically :)

To check if you have this enabled: From MR314 Admin page select ADVANCED > WIRELESS and then click on ACCESS FILTER on top of the page.
- Set WIRELESS FILTER ACTIVATED TO YES
and then enter the MAC Address of the CLIE WiFi (shown on the back of the card under the bar code) (make sure you put a ":" after every two digits.
So instead of typing:
0030ab15ef65 you would type 00:30:ab:15:ef:65
click APPLY and you are set to filter out who can use your MR314.

FINAL TROUBLESHOOTING NOTES:
- if things still don't work, I would go to the lowest common denomitor:
- disable the above mentioned WIRELESS FILTER.
- disable WEP
- test your setup on a public WiFi access... (maybe its your router ? do you have anything else working on it that works fine ? )

Good Luck,
dks

dks99,

Thanks for that great info, yes I've tried all of that but I still can't get it to work. My router is not being used as the DHCP server, I do have a Windows 2000 server setup as a DHCP server so I'm not sure if that is the problem.

I took my NX70V to work once and got it to work with our Orinoco system but when I tried to connect again later, it wouldn't work. I'll continue to try some of your other suggestions and let you know if I'm successful. Thanks!

Hello Nick!

I am sorry to hear your having so much difficulty. Every situation is unique. What works for one, doesn't work for another. Auto settings in my two clies did not work, so everything had to be set manually. I have a combo wire/wireless network with a mish-mash of everything. My Linksys WAP11 and 4 port router had to be tweaked. I spent 3 head-banging days myself, but it paid off. My router is set for DHCP, everything else is static, and I am connected via cable modem. So the Internent connection is always on. That means no PC's need be powered up and running. Now, with a dial-up, that complicates the situation by having to share the connection with the desktop PC. That's basically independant of HotSyncing. In my setup, the router is the hub or center of the whole LAN, so each PC or Clie can operate independantly of each other and is also the most simple of setups. So somehow you'll have to tie the two together in your PC so the connection can be shared with the LAN. ICS is one way and in XP bridging is another. I do have a dial-up as a backup, but it's not bridged. If I have to go to the dial-up because the cable modem is down, access from the Clie is the least of my worries.

Additionaly, since the router is not the center of the universe, the Gateway address will have to be set to something else. The Gateway and DNS addresses are what steer your Clie towards the Internet. The IP and Gateway addresses are what is needed for connecting to the router from your Clie.

DSL can also be a bear, from what I have seen.

I hope there is something in my post that will help you resolve your dilemma

Cheers people.

I will take the time to sit down later and keep plugging at this issue. It's amazing how little you (read I) know when others get technical! It will take some working out but I'll keep going.

Thanks again for the time and assistance.

Cheers,

Nick

hello nick,

i am the guy here laughing at your misery! It took me 6 days to figure out & set up my home network and only 10 minute to get my nz linked to the WLAN.

it all depends on if you are using your Wlan hub as a DHCP router or as a bridge to your modem used to connect to the internet.

if you are using it as a bridge, then all you need to enter is you SSID and wep same as the hub.

While we are talking wifi, I replaced my 802.11b access point with a new linksys 102.11g/b access point, and now netfront runs faster (???!!!!)..... guess what, the new access point is full duplex 100BaseT back to my router, instead of the 1/2 duplex 10BaseT.... just the small increase in speed made a noticably snappier web browsing response...
