In checking my UX-50 Internal Media (memory) it shows capacity of 31024KB, used is 28992K and free is 2032K. So it appears I am using 29MB. However, if I check all directories (with CLIE Files or Filez) I can only account for about 18MB. (I included hidden directories and files). I do use AliasExt on the internal media. I have also had system crashes when playing with new software. I suspect that a system crash caused some memory space to be lost (incorrectly marked as in-use).

With DOS (yes I am that old!) we used to have CHKDSK or other utilities that would recalculate actual use and free up lost space. Is there any such app for Clie or Palm?

Another alternative is to FORMAT the Internal media with CLIE files. This appears to be a valid option, but before I try it, has anyone else tried this or had a similar problem?

Well, I was brave. Saved all files, and deleted EVERYTHING in Internal memory, except hidden system directory, Rebooted UX-50. It recreated the Palm file structure, but same problem. It shows used as 12544K but there is nothing but an empty file structure and system directory with Clie hidden files - about 800K. I tried to FORMAT with "Clie Files", but it says that operation is not allowed. Same with "Palm Card info".

So where is the 12 MB? Is this just my UX-50 or is this some type of magic memory that is used elswhere? But both programs show available of 30.2 MB.

Last time I checked, the 'format' option was disabled for the NAND driver (used for "Int. Media")

Sounds like the FAT file system is partially corrupted, and some blocks lost - which can happen to any DOS FAT volume

Fix:
Run the "Data Import" program on the CLIE. Select "Int. Media" in the upper right and press "Connect".
The "Int. Media" drive will appear on your PC as a new drive (eg: "E:\") - you may have to install a driver if you haven't done this before.

Now run CHKDSK on the drive just like any other DOS volume (eg: "CHKDSK E:"). See if there is anything obviously wrong before trying to fix it ("CHKDSK /F E:")

Good luck

Hi CliePet,

That worked PERFECTLY. It created a hidden directory with the lost fragments. (I had never noticed that Data Import allowed select of internal media). With the number of crashes for test software and installs, it is not surprising that the FAT table gets messed up - same as on a PC. It's probably a good idea to run CHKDSK on internal media and memsticks to check for lost space or damaged file stuctures.

THANKS!

This is good info, I would have never thought to run checkdisk on a clie.

You can also use Windows Explorer to do several useful things.

Right-click Clie drive, and select Properties-Tools. From here you can error check drive integrity for either Int. Media or Memstick. This can recover lost space, just like CHKDSK. For memstick, you can also use defragment (not supported for Int. Media since this is 12BIT FAT)

Also, you can goto Tools-Folder Options-View and enable hidden folders/files. This allows full file management of Int media and memstick - just like Filez and Clie Files, only easier. This is also a way to manage the hidden "system" folder in Int. Media.

While all of this should be very safe (at least on my UX-50) - but ymmv (Your Mileage May Vary)...
