I have a NR70V. Today as I was working with a Quickword document, it froze up on me. I hit the reset button and the screen went black. Now it won't turn off. I don't have the 'hold' switch on. I tried soft and hard resets, but nother happens. THe green light at the top is still on, but nothing else seems to work.

Help.

if all else fails, wait till the battery dies and then fully recharge it and turn it on

My did that and as I recall I just plugged into the power and turned it on and off a couple of times which seemed to corrected the problem. Seemed like at times it was the power button itself that caused the problem. I did notice that if I fiddled around with the hold button that would also correct it. I figured that it was just something that this model did ever so often. I ended up getting rid of it and am now trying to decide between the TG50 and the NZ90. Good luck on your problem, you are not alone.

What?!?! This JUST happened to me, after installing a trial of the new Quickword 7.

What the?!?!

Looks like I'm waiting too.

My NR70V has done that 3 times too. The first time I finally unscrewed the back, because someone had suggested unplugging the battery. I couldn't get the battery unplugged, but the unit did begin to work again. I wondered if the power button had become stuck, then unstuck when I lifted off the back.

The other two times it responded to anxious fiddling with the power and hold buttons, and a soft reset. I don't know what worked, but I was away from home and did not have a screwdriver with me.

It happened to me once and almost freaked me out. I hac been listeneing to a audio book at the time and had turned off the unit over night. It turned out that the hold button was engaged. I felt pretty stupid after that for about 1 minute then I was over it. I won't forget to check the hold button next time.

Well, I waited till the LED died, then charged it a bit and tried resetting the device. Nothing. Power LED is on, and stays on, but nothing happens.

I then disconnected the battery for a couple of minutes, then reconnected. Still nothing.

I would normally just take it back for warranty, but I've fiddled with the ROM, so now I'm worried...

What the?!?! While putting the back cover back on, my clie made a scary "electrical sizzle" type of sound, and I heard the Clie music as it reset. I held the cover in place, turned it over, and it was working again.

Very scary.

Happened to me last week. Just like you, I tried to let the battery run down and tried to charge it - didn't work. I disconnected the battery and then reconnected it. Let it charge a couple of minutes and - voila! It has worked perfectly since.

(I messed with my ROM, too.)

While my machine was down, I tried to exchange it at Circuit City. Since my machine is not more than 1 year old, the extended warranty plan doesn't come into play. So I called Sony & they sent me a box (which I'm hanging on to, just in case something is really wrong). I didn't realize that the CC warranty only went into effect after 1 year. What a pain! I rarely keep a PDA that long!

Oh, and I tried to buy the last NR70V in any CC in the area. Went to the store - they had an open box item for $365 - had been a display unit, wasn't even charged and NO CRADLE. I offered the manager $250 - he wouldn't take it. Said he could send it back and get credit for full price and would rather do that than sell it to me for $250.

CC has lost me as a PDA customer for sure.

That's only if you register your Clie. If you don't register with Sony, then the manufacturers warranty is only 90 days, and then you deal with CC's extended warranty after that.

If you're getting the store's extended warranty, don't register with Sony.

Hard reset did not work in my case, but it is certainly worth a try.

This makes no sense to me. Why would I want an unregistered unit?

Besides, when I took my unit in, they looked up the warranty information and immediately said that the extended warranty did not kick in for a year. They never asked whether or not the unit was registered.

I know that Sony's warranty is only 90 days if not registered, but I'll bet that CC would not honor a warranty after just 90 days.

Hmm, well, I'm in Canada, so have never dealt with Circuit City.

At Future Shop, they have the Clie's listed as a 90 Day warranty on their system, unless you register. I know this because I had my NR70v replaced under Future Shop's warranty, not fixed under Sony's, and it's only 5 months old.

Future Shop must be quite a bit more lenient. I think it helped that I had every original piece that came in the box with the unit. They could've taken my 5 month old Clie and sold it to somebody, and that person would've thought it was a new-in-box item.

Yea I love future shop warranties. I use them all the time and sometimes a couple of times for the same item. I have taken things back within 5 days and they have replaced it for me. I haven't taken anything back over $600 within a 5 day period so maybe items more than that would be different, but otherwise I have never had any problems. Most of the time they don't even bother asking what is wrong they just exchange it and when they do ask it is usually just some casual question just as I am about to leave.
