avi is not supported.
Strange you could change an avi in MPEG. Which programm you said??

AVI is normally the bigger file. MQV is so small because of MPEG4 and the quality- probably lowest(i.e. monoaural and smaller video size).

You will have to be more specific about how you are converting the avi. If you are determined, it can be done. You may have to demux the sound from video, convert sound to layer 3, and multiplex back with video to compatable mpg type then to clie image converter. This is a pain but it can be done with some free software and free codecs if necessary. The mpg should be comprised of multplexed divx video with mpeg layer 3 audio. Then it will work properly in image converter.

What software can you do this with? I'm trying to convert some Seinfeld episodes which are in .avi to .mqv. However, i cannot find any software which can do this w/o giving me any errors. Does anyone know the steps to do this? I've been searching these forums for several hours now and couldn't find the answer i needed.

image converter will convert avi's
but image converter is picky about video and audio formats

Use Divx video encoding with PCM audio

virtualdub will do this for you

I've downloaded virtualdub but for some reason it always gives me an error right near the end of the encoding process and kills everything. The error it keeps giving me is "cannot seek within file "xxxx.avi" The parameter is incorrect." Any ideas why this is happening?

Check the Video subforum of the apllictions forum on this site, there you have detailed explanation of how to convert video to mqv.

If you don't want best quality convert to divx (set the bitrate as high as possible!) with pcm audio first, if you want best video quality read and use my guide in the video forum.
