Hi guys,
I have searched around the forums, but I couldn't find an answer to the question.
I heard that you don't really need a router or WiFi access point to HotSync your PDA with laptop. I think you can connect the two using computer-to-computer connection. I don't know how to do that and I'd appreciate any help from someone who had successfully done this.
thanks,

HI:
To sync via laptop wifi without an access point you need to connect in adhoc mode. This is what I did (I think)!!
These settings work on my XP-prof laptop running an integrated wifi card ann alow me to sync at work using adhoc and at home via wireless AP/router using infrastructure mode (on a different wireless profile). I also have a separate integrated wired LAN which runs from a static IP to my work's network. So far everything is behaving nicely but YMMV.
On the Clie:
set up an adhoc network connection in wireless prefs. Leave autoconnect unchecked. Next check and uncheck DHCP to allow you to enter an ip address for your clie (e.g. 192.168.0.2, subnet usually 255.255.255.0)
Now go to the hotsync util. and select Modem/Wireless LAN as your method of hotsyncing. In the menu under lansync prefs choose lansync as opposed to local.
In primary PC set up set primarypcname to !! (double exclamation marks), primary PC address to the IP of your laptops wireless LAN (e.g. 192.168.0.1) , and subnet to 255.255.255.0.
NOW:
On the PC set up an IP address for your wireless LAN that matches the IP you selected to use in primary PC setup. (It is probably better to assign a fixed IP here, at least that is what I did)
finally go to hotsync prefs/settings/network and click tcp/ip settings. Now select the ip address of the LAN and enter the same subnet mask as before.
You should now be set up for wireless adhoc hotsync.
Good luck
mark
ps. The above instructions may be incomplete as I did all this a while ago and promptly forgot what I did. However I remembr that when I set this up I found an excellent article via the wonders of google that walked me through the process and would probably be of far more use to you than my instructions above. Remeber, Google is your friend!

Here is another thread that fully covers this topic:

Mark,
Thank you very much for the steps. I followed the instructions but after I had everything set up. I didn't know what to do next... If I just click on HotSync it's going to connect to my wireless network and sync through it (the router) Is there another network connection I should add or something?
thanks,

I have the same problem. I am also using AdHoc mode via netgear's laptop adapter. My UX can coonect to my laptop. But for some reason, I can't hotsync using WiFi. I can hotsync via USB, IR, or BT with no problem. I also checked everything in the hotsync icon on the taskbar to see if I checked "network", and I did. I just want to know, same as YouEks50 above, if "hotsync via WiFi using AdHoc mode is possible?"

Hi, thanks for the link. I tried it but I still could not hotsync. My UX can connect but that is how far it can go. I know it is my setup. I'll keep on trying different things.

Thank you very much Choongyouqi. It finally worked... It's 100 times more convenient this way... you made me love my UX50 even more :P
I had a problem at first though. I kept getting "IP Address Conflict" error message. I solved that by changing the IP address in the UX50... I didn't read the instructions carefully the first time, hehehe!

Would it be easier to get a $9.00 usb bluetooth adapter off ebay for the laptop and use bluetooth?

Why buy extra equipment when it's possible to accomplish the same thing faster with the existing builtin technologies?
I've always been using a Bluetooth toggle to hotsync & has been without problems.
But suddenly just decided to try out WiFi hotsync, & I found these material very useful. Now I can also hotsynce with my Vaio Notebook attached with a PCMCIA wireless card. :D
Thanks guys for all the materials posted here.
It's obviously much faster when using WiFi Hotsync.
Now the next thing to do is to get the UX to surf via Wifi. :)
