I charged my battery only recently and attempted to try out some games. Before that I did the normal PIM stuff and so. Amazing, when I started playing games like Rocketmania on the UX50, the battery percentage drop like mad, within 10 mins, it dropped like 10-20%. and in matters of 20-30 mins, it went from 98% to 50%.
After stopping the game, it went back up to about 80% or so.
I did try to playback some MP3 music, and for 6 hours, it went down to 50%.
What do you guys think about this?
At this rate, I wonder if I can play games on the UX lasting over 2 hours.

get the eb40 extended battery if you hadnt already. judging that you've probably had your UX for quite a while consider getting your battery replaced :D. how long is the lifespan of the UX battery btw, anyone?:) :D

" how long is the lifespan of the UX battery btw, anyone"
Depends on how much it is used, and how many charging cycles. Probably 1-3 years.
Also to maximize battery (ANY Palm battery), be sure to:
1) turn off "receive beams" in Preferences
2) install the Preference app "Autodimmer" which does as the name implies

I heard that the internal batt can be replaced...if you are adventurous enuff...I wonder if Sony will replace old failing batteries a year from now.....now that they have discontinued the line

man, i just did a battery time test. at the brightness slider level at the end of the ok button. My battery lasted for only 2 hr 36 mins before hitting 10%. But it seems strange that for MP3 playback, it can last for 6 hours and still at 50%. Will the EB40 help in anyway? I am thinking of replacing the internal battery instead.

supposedly the eb40 should tripple the power (something like that) of the UX. so your pretty sure it'll last you the whole day playing intensive games i guess.:D

that will be 120 US bucks. Considering I bought mine at 350 US. does not seem worth it. haha.
but the best would be a new battery and a eb40? :)

would you guys
1) sell this UX50 away
2) buy a EB40 and continue using the internal battery
3) change the internal battery
4) change both the internal battery and buy a EB40.
Option 4 is unlikely for me as I have budget constraits. Maybe you guys can consider this, with a budget of about 120US in mind.
Thanks. :)

if it was me id go for option 3. i myself dont own an eb40, cant afford it. i dont mind lugging my charger around or charge it per day! well at least for now
cheers:D

The EB40 is a MUST for the UX50. I have a thread on where to find the EB40.
Dropzone, with your budget you mentioned you could get an EB40 from brando. I would HIGHLY suggest. It will make you experience with the UX50 like a whole new one. No more battery worries. The EB40 is amazing, :D

My country still sells the EB40 actually. :) I guess I will call up Sony to ask them how much will it cost to change a UX battery.
I am also thinking of selling the UX away to get a SE K700i instead. Hmmm

MP3 playback is so great on the UX because the AudioPlayer app is designed to take full advantage of the HHE and scale power consumption way down when it has to. Most of the built in apps (movie player etc.) are plugged into the HHE this way, which is why they last so long playing MP3's, movies etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but no other apps are able to do this, which is why playing games or doing whatever else on the UX yields kinda so-so battery life and playing mp3's lasts for hours.
Drop, your battery life you posted is not abnormal. The longest I have EVER gotten the UX to stay alive NOT using any of the built-in apps is just under 3 hours using the internal battery. This is just a fact of life with the UX: it doesn't have the greatest internal battery in the world. This is where I REALLY miss my old NX80V. :D
Depending on how long you've had your UX50 and how you have treated the battery (constantly draining it until empty=bad...trying to leave it as full as possible=GOOD) it may have suffered some degredation, but I wouldn't worry about it too much as your results seem well within the normal range. Anyway, once you get the EB40 your battery cares will fly right out the window...along with a $120! haa lol ;)

Sounds logical on the part where you mention about the UX utilizing the HHE with audioplayer. I tried using PTunes, and find that battery life drops pretty fast.
This UX50 is not bought first hand, which would cost SG1189. I bought it at SG650, which is almost half the price. I am not sure of how the previous owner treated this battery. Apart from a very faint scratch on the UX, the screen even without the SP is good. I am suspecting he is seriously underutilizing the battery, which find cause it to deteriorate to a certain extent.
Having come from the NX80 series, I guess I find the battery seriously a problem.
Perhaps, my battery is working fine afterall. Only thing is I always wonder why when I play games, the battery life drops like mad.
Anyone having similar battery problems too?

The battery life drops like mad because, frankly...it's a UX! Seriously, the battery life just isn't all that great even on a brand new UX unit with a perfect battery.
Coming from an NX80V like I did (and you did too), battery life was a HUGE shock to me because the NX80V just goes & goes & goes. Thing is, the NX80V spoiled me. I took me quite a while to adjust to the UX. Now I have, plus I have the EB40 so I don't have anymore battery issues. :D

ive only had my brand new UX recently and playing intensive games like warefareINC seriously drains the battery. so yeah its just the UX. btw dropzone how much is the EB40 in singapore? i may drop by to get myself one:D

219 dollars. :)
i just called sony singapore. they told me to send in for checking, if the technicans say the battery is abnormal, they will change it for free. and they said that service and support is on even if its 2 yrs later. :)

You can try one of those battery logging programs to really check your internal battery- I think there are 2 called 'BatteryTime' and 'UpTime'. Let me know if you do, I have been wondering about my battery as well, we can compare results.
If it turns out your internal battery is poor, then you can buy a replacement at cliebattery.com (they sell tons of batteries for everything from PDAs to cell phones to notebook computers.) It's $39 USD for a UX battery.
I have the EB40, and it's great. However, I keep my UX in my front pocket, so the EB40 is too big to carry around with it. I'm able to get enough battery life from my UX as long as I don't use Wifi. If you use a lot of Wifi then the EB40 is practically as necessary as a wireless access point! ;)

my timing using battery time is 2 hr 36 mins before the batt goes to 10%. brightness is near the ok button. about 1cm from the minimum.

I think the battery indicator indicates how much you have on your battery with the current running tasks and CPU usage. I noticed that when I turn on WiFi battery drops 20% or more (almost instantly), but once I turn it off it goes back to normal... I think battery indicator shows you that if you continue to use WiFi (or play games) you will have this much battery, but once you end all 'resource-hungry' applications and start using regular PIM the battery goes back to normal.

OK, it's my turn! I'll download the program and give it a try. I'll use about 25% brightness (close to yours), since that's where I normally keep it. I think most people test with max, but this would be more realistic for me.
Hopefully others can post their times too.

6 Hours of mp3 playback using the hold button?
