View Full Version : Li-Ion battery failure

About 2-1/2 months ago I replaced the battery in my NX60, as the original one (with about 1 years service) was no longer holding much of a charge.

Recently, I found I was having trouble resetting the device with a reset pin. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the back of the case was separating from the front along the edge nearest the reset hole.

When I opened it up to check it out, it "popped" apart and I discovered that the mylar/foil (?) bag the battery is encased in had swollen up like a pillow, putting a considerable force on the case and circuitry. I'm now down, awaiting a replacement battery. Out of curiosity, has anyone else had this problem with an original (or replacement) battery?

The new battery held a great charge, and the only difference in usage was a new 512meg CF card I added just a couple of weeks ago (but I saw no impact on battery charge life, so I don't suspect the CF had anything to do with the failure.

Li-Ion batteries require a special profile while charging. If you are overcharging the battery it can fail, even in a spectacular way (fires and explosions).

I had read that Li-Ion cells could swell if improperly charged - especially if they had fallen too low in voltage. But, to the best of my knowledge, that did not happen. The NX60 was charged using it's original charger - either via the cradle or the dongle/adaptor gizmo. I was only charging it every few days, as the new battery was holding charge so well (unlike twice a day with the original battery just before I replaced it). It was seeing more use as an MP3 player, what with a new 512 meg CF card...:-).

the interesting thing is where you got your replacement battery. Tell them your battery issue. I'm sure, they will replace your battery
