View Full Version : eReader Pro Question

Is there any way to close a book in eReader Pro? What I mean is as follows.
I keep all my books on memory stick. After I have finished one I like to leave it on my TH55 so I just set it back to page 1 of the book and then go and open another book. The problem with this is that eReader considers them all to still be open so keeps a file of between 5KB and 15KB in RAM for each (I assume this is cached data for the current page, which is always page 1 for me, and the big files will be for books that have artwork on page 1). I'm hoping that I've just missed something obvious and that there is a way to tell eReader to close a book and hence delete the cache file in RAM for that book.
Failing the above, do others have the same problem? Eventually I'm going to be loosing well over 1MB to these cache files. has anyone tried just deleting them with File Manager? Does that de-stabilise eReader at all? My guess is that it's the only solution right now. Annoying, but I probably only need to do it once every month so not the end of the world, just another small area where eReader could improve.

I'm afraid I don't know how to close a book, but I do delete the cache files from time to time, and haven't noticed any adverse effects.

Thanks you. You gave me the confidence that I hadn't missed anything obvious. I guess I'll just need to do a regular cleanup, and it's another thing to add to my list of small niggles to complain about to ereader.com.

If you use a program like FileZ you can filter for files that end with Ex or Kx and delete them. These are the two files use to store bookmarks, current page, notes, highlighting, etc for each book. You will see one of each for each book you read. Deleting them will not hurt eReader or the eBook at all.

So that is where some 300K went o_O, ereader seems fine BUT considering what other readers I use (isilo, tibr pro) it manages memory poorly.
Thanks for the tip.
I have a folder called "Read Books" on my card. When I am done with a book and decide I don't want to save ready access to it for some reason (like bookmarks for reference) I move it to my Read Books folder and then delete the related Ex and Kx files. This also removes it from eReader's "Open..." list, which can be good when you have 500+ eBooks on your card like I do.

500+ eBooks.
The "Read Books" folder is a clever idea, but it is sad that you have to invent it for yourself. It's a problem that never occured to me, but really eReader should address it. If they allowed one to set a "read" attribute on a book and gave the option in the "Open" dialogue to hide or show read books then that would be more flexible. The only problem with your home-grown solution is that it does take a little work if you want to re-read a book. It's no biggie I grant you, and your's is the best solution with the facilities available to you, but it would be nicer if eReader offered something itself.

Precisely. Actually, I've got dreams for an eBook manager that would contain more data about them - summary, my info, read tag, picture, etc - and would launch each book in the proper reader. I could finally have one place all my books were listed. Since Fictionwise has a csv you can download with info about all your books it wouldn't be much data entry. I forsee a number of metadata tags and filtering, so I no longer have to put things in either the category for what the topic is or what the status is (like read - reference, eager to read, etc)
Anyone out there a coder that might want to take this one? I've looked into HanDBase and can't see any way of launching the books, and that's about my coding capabilities here.

It would also be nice if eReader Pro was syncable, ie bookmarks etc would exisit on the PC as well so when reading on the PC you would have access to all that info as well.

I've dreamed of exactly the same thing. I would be a customer for such a product if it worked well and the price was reasonable. The only feature that would probably be really hard to do, but would be really nice, would be if the eBook manager could somehow hook itself into eReader and the other readers so that, with eReader for instance, it got called when you tapped the "Open book" toolbar icon rather than the pathetic eReader "Open" dialogue.

I have a suggestion and it works just fine for me...
I use LauncherX, so I don't know how well it would work for the other launchers. Open your favourite File Manager (Filez works great for me) and set the attribute "Launchable" to active (By placing a check on the box). This makes it so that the e-book can be launched with it's associated application without further configuration. Next I had configured 3 tabs with stuff like e-books, reference and misc. I set up 3 directories on my expansion card and in LauncherX added "Document Search Paths" to them(Memory card button in the prefs.).
I then used LauncherX's built-in move/copy features to drag and drop the ebooks where I wanted them. I convert/create my own materials for reference and leisure readng and use eReader solely. I can't vouch for how other readers will handle it. I didn't discover this method by chance, I was tipped onto this method way back at Cliesource when a few users were looking for a way to open DocsToGo documents without going through the Dataviz "document manager".

This is the type of thing I've been hoping for. Has anyone tried this with Zlauncher? And with another reader? (eReader is my favorite, but I am forced to use others for some eBooks.)
Cat
Hmmm. I should try that. I had tried a program that made launchable "alias" type things to ebooks, but it took too much work and space to create the little launchable files. Now that ZLauncher can do different display formats (list, icon, etc) for different tabs it might work well. I had previously used LauncherX because of that particular capability. Launchable.... Have to try that.
Thanks,

If the eBooks all have the same extension, how will the launcher know what reader software to open?
