Seems a little late in the game for Ampex to be trying to enforce patent infrigement rights. Not importing PDA's obviously isn't a problem and Sony has battalions of lawyers that will keep this tied up in court for years.

I don't know what the Ampex patent contains, and don't know what the lawsuit addresses, but that would seem to apply to digital cameras, cell phones, etc. which store images in some manner. Maybe others have paid Ampex for the right to use the technology or maybe the Sony etc. technology is uniquely infringing on Ampex patents, but they probably attack Sony because Sony is Sony.
