Is there a way for us UX50 lovers to add a background picture or skin to our UX50? I have yet to find anyone who has made any skins for the UX50. Please help.

There used to be tons of background pics for the UX on Cliesource. I downloaded and used quite a few of them.

Hi amoon,

How do you get to post a picture of your clie in the forum? What application do you use? Can you please give me a step by step instructions and where to store and run the applications, internal memory or memory stick? Thanks in advance.

There are skins for the UX50 virtual grafitti and status bar here...

...no additional software required, but read the instructions to understand how to uninstall.

Backgrounds in AppShelf

1. You need to download AppShelf from the developers website found here http://www.jade.dti.ne.jp/~imazeki/palm/APsh/index-e.html and if you like it buy it.

2. To give you a better idea on how to use it check this page http://www.kellyedwards.com/comet.htm

3. Once you have AppShelf installed on your UX you need to resize your picture of choice to 480 x 320 (I use IrFanview http://www.irfanview.com/) or you can use a Palm app called SplashPhoto http://www.splashdata.com/splashphoto/index.htm which has a PC desktop interface that does Auto resizes.

4. Then once you have your background pic you can move/copy the pic to your MS via MSimport or a card reader (remember which directory you moved/copied your pic to on your MS as you will need to find it later)

5. Installing you pic as a back ground from AppShelf.

Click on the drop down menu in AppShelf and choose "Wallpaper", then in the first line you see click on "Import" then a 2nd line appears. Click on "Import" on the 2nd line. You now get a file manager screen. The top line is where you choose from which area of the UX your picture is stored, click on your MS. The square below shows you the folders on your MS, find the one where you copied/moved your picture to from number 4 above and simply choose your picture and click "ok" at the bottom.

6. Thats it

How do you post a picture in this forum?

I use a free app called ZGrab http://www.codejedi.com/shadowplan/freestuff.html that grabs a pcx file of your UX screen. I then use IrFanview (above) to convert the pcx file to a jpg. Then you have to upload you pic to a free picture webserver or your own website and copy the link to your picture with the following code infront of your link but without the * [*img]your link goes here[/img*]

Thanks amoon. Infranview is a PC application and ZGrab is a palm application, did I get that right? Does ZGrab have an option to store the picture shot of the UX to its memory stick?

Yes to IrFanview and yes to ZGrab, ZGrab will store either to your IM or MS only

Hey DJL. I just downloaded one of your skins and it screwed up my clie.
The error message says
DataMgr .c,Line:9524, Index out of range
You may need to restart the handheld by performing a soft reset. Please press the RESET button.
But it seems that the clie is frozen and when I do soft resets the same error message comes up. I also did a hard reset and the same thing.
Help!

have you tried a "warm" reset? press the up arrow key while you press the reset button. You might be able to delete the virtual grafitti prc's. (you should map your file manager to a button so you can call it up in the "safe boot" mode)

Im finally able to get into my clie files. The problem file is called BaM-VG-1.
But when I try to delete it it says its a read only file.
How do I get rid of this?

amoon

Daywalker, you have to do a warm reset as per the instructions that came when you downloaded the skin. It you look at my screengrab i use one of those skins so it isn't a virus. Follow the instructions.

Ok, as you can tell I know very little about pda's.
So I'm panicing now. I deleted something called reader dat from my memory stick hoping it would reformat my stick and get rid of my problem but now my data export can't read what's on my memory stick

Sorry about losing it. I spent a lot on this clie and I don't want to loose money.
But what do i do now? I get this error message now everytime I hotsync, and when I tried the warm reset I got my prefs tab and a blank half of the screen where my grafitti pad should be

Alright, I read the instructions and did everything the way it's supposed to be done and hitting reset still wont work.
Keep getting that index out of range error message.

Yes thats what happens with a war reset.

Now you have to find your file manager. You have to link say cliefiles to a "Hotkey".

Go to preferences, choose "Extension" click on "Setting" next to "Hotkey Settings". You will see a list of hotkeys that you can assign a function to. click on the down arrow and select Cliefile.

Now do the warm reset again then start cliefile via the hotkey, say you assigned it to the first one you would press "Ctrl+1" and Cliefiles will start, find the 2 files for the silkscreen BaM* and delete them.

Do a hard reset and it should be back to normal.

One more thing you might have to delete the 2 BaM* files from the backup directory on your PC before you hotsync again.

Go to "sony handheld" directory in your program files then you should find your name or something similar, go into this directory then into "backup".

You should see the same 2 files (BaM*) and delete them. Then do a hotsync after you delet the files from your UX

Another question amoon. How did you put the mini pad (Z, hotsync, datebook, memopad, etc.) for the icons on the side?

amoon

Check this page out (page 2) as i have explained it there. Drag yhe icon pad over to the side menu.

<<find your file manager. You have to link say cliefiles to a "Hotkey">>

For one time use it is perhaps simpler to just press <Ctrl-H> repeatedly until the category which includes the file manager is displayed. However, I don't believe Clie Files is sufficient for this task because it cannot alter the Read Only setting, even after a warm reset. I think Daywalker will need another file manager to remove these files. Please mention if you know a way to do it with Clie Files alone.

djl,

I think your right, Mcfile (beta) is probably the best one for the job and i didn't know you could continue to press Ctrl-H to cycle throught the categories, thanks for the tip.

read the "read me" file that came with the downloaded zip file. it should tell you a proper way to uninstall. deleting it manually wont do any good.

"To uninstall:
Soft reset (hold keyboard up arrow and hit reset. Keep holding up arrow until preferences screen appears)
Ctrl-H will take you back to the main launcher screen.
Using a file utility like Filez, delete BaM-SB-xx and BaM-VG-xx
Reset clié normally and your default skin will be active again.

You can get Filez at http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/filez.shtml"
