Please be kind and don't take my head off because this subject may have been covered before, but can the NX series be upgraded similiar to the Compac-Hp Ipaq when a new operating system comes out. I had a 3600 Ipaq and when Microsoft upgraded to the new 2002 pocket-pc operating system I received an upgrade cd-rom with the operating system and downloaded it onto the flash-rom of my Ipaq. No! I don't want to go back to the Ipaq and I am in love with the NX-60 Clie I now own. I was just wondering?
Thanks-penwatch1

I don't think so.
I am a relatively NEW NX70 user, BUT from all the reading & research I did on SONY PDA's I don't think that has ever occured *or recently*

THe latest NX70 upgrade? IT takes up some of the available 11mb =/

It did happen, once, with the N710.  When they came out with the N760 shortly after the 710, they offered to upgrade the ROMS for a price.  Shortly thereafter, someone posted the ROMs on a Yahoo group along with a flash program and anybody who wanted to, could update their ROMs for free.  Somehow, I doubt that will happen again.

The NX having 16MB of flash indicates that it could except new versions of the O/S but.... Sony has rarely provided upgrades.

Along this line does O/S 5 support JackFlash etc to be able to put PDB's and PRC's into the free space?? How much free flash ROM space is there in a NX???

Thanks!

Sad but true... While a ROM upgrade is theoretically possible, Sony doesn't seem very much interested by that option in general.

In the case of the N710C upgrade, they required users to send the Clie back to them for the upgrade, so I don't think they would release a CD for another ROM upgrade in the future, even if they decided to make use of that FlashROM.

You'll be able to get around 4Mb of FlashROM using JackFlash... as soon as an OS5-compatible version is released! :-)

I think you have the order of things a little backwords. I am pretty sure that people started flashing their 710s to OS 4.1 before Sony started their official upgrade policy. IIRC, Someone hacked brayder's jacksprat and used it to extract the 760's rom and then taught 710 users how to flash the their clies with the latest operating system. Sony may never have offered their crappy upgrade program if it did not start to look like only people willing to pirate the new os were going to get an ugrade.

You might be right, but as far as I can remember the truth is somewhere in the middle! ;)

If I remember correctly, the Japanese N700C users got the OS3.5 -> OS4.1 official upgrade first. One of the improvements was the ability to read MP3 files for the N750C users (N700C had to purchase a software patch from Sony to do that), but since it was already included in the N710C (which was able to read MP3 right from the start), Sony USA was a bit slow to propose the official upgrade to US users, and people started playing with JackSprat.

The use of JackSprat to reflash the ROM had been initiated earlier in order to (illegally, of course) flash an English ROM on a Japanese N700C. Upgrading from N700C to N750C was very difficult for a long time since the size of the N750C ROM backup is greater than the available RAM on that device! On the other hand, upgrading from N710C to N760C was (technically) not very difficult, but still illegal...
