"40 Things To Do With A Pocket PC In A Week

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Sep04/40things.asp

Since Clie users do not have new devices to talk about and PalmOne is very silent of late, how about an exercise in making our current day-to-day usage of our palm device better by a one-way debate rebuttal.

Okay members the challenge is this: Pick a "Thing" on the list in the story and post how you do it on your device.

Rules Rules, please respond to one "Thing" at a time because my attention span is very short. If a thread has covered it, then just comment and provide the link.

For example:
Title: #38. I used it as a flashlight.

I use the desktop and just turn it on. The intensity on the standard Palm OS is enough because of the blank white background. If you want an application, check www.palmgear.com and search on flashlight.

Your Options:
http://web.cs.cmu.edu/~pane/fl/
http://www.freewarepalm.com/misc/flashlight.shtml

Extra Reading:

P.S. #29 (or missing #30) is cute. "PDA relic indeed".

1. I looked up words in a dictionary.

The free eReader software comes with a free dictionary. However through wifi, I can also go to www.m-w.com using Netfront.

11. I made a grocery list.

I use ThinkDB - now smart list to go. I got the free version and made up my own lists. It's great because as I uncheck items they go off the list so I always know what I have left to get.

For the over achievers, if you think of something you do everyday that is NOT on the list, the numbering starts at #41.

Thanks Joel, I guess this thread is fully endorsed from the top.

21. I calculated a mortgage rate.

I use powerOne Financial which has Time Value of Money calculations built in to help a client decide what mortgage to take based on different options of rates and points.

14. I listened to music.

As soon as I bought Norah Jones’s new CD, I converted the songs on the album to MP3 format, put them on a storage card, and slipped it into my iPAQ. I listened to them via stereo headphones wherever I was. Better yet, I connected the iPAQ to my car’s cassette deck using a cassette audio converter and listened to them through the car’s stereo speakers. It’s awesome!

I've been slowly converting my CD collection to MP3s and putting various ones on my SD card for my T3. I also use a cassette converter to listen to them thru my car speakers.

(Actually, I probably could answer about 3/4 of his list but I'll leave that to others :D)

41. I managed my accounting practice.

I have converted a lot of the paper I used to keep in the day-to-day management of my accounting practice over to SmartList to Go. I have a database of all my clients that is linked to my timesheet database (one for each month). I use the timesheet to track billable hours and activities performed.

In addition, I have a database of all the tax returns to be completed, including due dates, and missing items. Since the 15th of every month is a filing deadline, I queried this database on the morning of the 15th and came up with a list of all the returns due that day which were not yet complete and for which I needed to file extensions.

(I could go on, but you get the idea!)

35. I managed my bills.

Actually, I don't manage my bills on my PDA. That's something I have to do on the computer still. (What I listed in 41 relates to managing my business.)

I use Salling Clicker (http://homepage.mac.com/jonassalling/Shareware/Clicker/) and my TH55/E to flip through Keynote presentations, raise/lower the volume and change tracks in iTunes, control the DVD Player, or make my Powerbook sleep/wake-up and more.

''There are a lot of programs out there for converting units. I used a simple one called ConverterCE, available for free from Fann Software (http://www.fannsoftware.com). I am sure there are others with more features, but this one did the job for me."

AppShelf combined with Hi-Launcher can make your Palm screen look and act like your WindowsXP desktop.
Obviously, that setup would make any trembling MS geek's transition to the superior Palm OS, seem like a walk in the park. :)

6. I read my email.

A true nerd, I do have multiple email addresses, and SnapperMail Premier (http://www.snappermail.com/palm/email/) handles them all flawlessly. It even integrates with AI Pro and Documents to Go (as well as other apps) to handle attachments. I usually do it via BT and my SE T616.

40. I viewed an Excel spreadsheet.

I not only viewed an Excel spreadsheet, I edited it, and emailed it. Viewing and editing were handled by Documents to Go Premiere 6 (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=609188D1-CF18-A787-A98995D68C9FCA62&PartnerREF=&prodID=2856). Email client was SnapperMail as mentioned in the previous message.

Best of all, when I got back home the next day, the edited file was automatically synced with my PC so I had the current version on my desktop.

Docs to Go and SnapperMail: two absolutely can't live without apps.

Two words: Pocket Quicken. I download transactions from my bank daily when I'm home, and enter transactions into the Clie on those days when I'm away. HotSyncs keep everything balanced.

It handles European currency and multiple accounts. Pocket Quicken is another app that is really worthwhile.

44. I journal my daily nutritional intake.

As a high-distance runner, I monitor what I eat fairly closely. I use a program called Weight-by-Date Pro. (http://www.provariant.com) I've got it on my desktop PC and a mobile version on my Clie to track such things as protein, carbs, fat, calories, etc. (It will track up to ten nutritional variables, including three customizable fields.) I've probably got almost 700 vegetarian specialties I eat entered into the 'My Foods' database, and it's great not to have to re-enter data for recurring items. It also has extensive USDA databases for more usual foods.
HotSyncs sync the data between the two devices, keeping me up to date wherever I am. Couldn't get along without it!!

45. Check music performance tempos; also calculate heartrate (beats per minute) after a run.

I'm an associate conductor, and need to often take preparatory rehearsals or warm-ups. A little freeware app called TapTempo (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=609188D1-CF18-A787-A98995D68C9FCA62&PartnerREF=&prodID=28232) allows you to tap beats, and it displays the tempo or BPM. When I'm observing a rehearsal, I can "tap" the tempo, and be certain that my tempo in subsequent rehearsals matches that of the music director. It also insures that I'm working within my aerobic zone on the treadmill. Useful little app!

4. I remembered my cousin’s birthday—for a change!

I remember all my relatives birthdays - and their ages, too :D Using Datebk5, I enter annual repeating events for birthdays and put the year behind the name. DB5 then tells me how old the person is.

46. I play music.

Using Songbook, I have basically a fakebook (for non-musicians here - that's just words and chords) that I can carry with me. When I visit others that have pianos, I can just whip out my T3, set it up on the music stand and play. What's nice is that with having the words, others can look over my shoulder and sing, too.

In the latest version, it supports icons and templates for various types of secure information. It's part of the Splash Wallet suite.

47. I write music.

[QUOTE=Vidge]12. I dialed my phone.

My phone's labelled a T616, but we do basically the same thing with different PDAs. I use Agendus for Palm OS Professional Edition (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=609188D1-CF18-A787-A98995D68C9FCA62&PartnerREF=&prodID=49803) on my TH-55/E, which integrates with the built-in Palm databases. I send emails, SMS, and dial the phone all from within Agendus. It's great! (But I'm really paranoid about backups ... anybody for whatever we're up to?!)

23. I converted a measurement.

All month I've been converting km to miles to calculate stage distances and mph in the Tour de France using an app called Formulas for Palm OS. (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=609188D1-CF18-A787-A98995D68C9FCA62&PartnerREF=&prodID=1587)

It also calculates currency values based on the current exchange rate, date calculator, loan payments, metric conversion, tip calculator and has an area code lookup. It also includes a conduit which automatically updates currency exchange rates and area codes.

While casually looking at the nightsky with binoculars, we observed a fuzzy ball in the vicinity of the Southern Cross. With the help of the Palm program Planetarium, we managed to identify it as Omega Centauri, the biggest star cluster in our galaxy! Over 5 million stars, which are 15,000 light years away from us. It sits in the Centaurus constellation in the southern skies. Actually the cluster can be seen without binoculars, if one knows where to look. :)

I wish I were still in school, but I do frequently Google in meetings ... and it's here that having a choice of BT or WiFi is great. I always have my T616 with me, so if I'm not within range of a wireless network, I use the phone as a modem and connect via BT. There have even been times when our network is down that I'm the only one who's still emailing and getting work done--all from my CLIE. Who needs a laptop?!

Essentially a "handheld headlines" service, Hand/RSS is a great way to obtain a large number of articles, then read those of interest based on the headline and first paragraph of text. I also have accessed Mapquest (http://www.mapquest.com/pda) to download turn-by-turn instructions to my CLIE.

To supplement that program, I use an app called I-WayInfo 2004 (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=609188D1-CF18-A787-A98995D68C9FCA62&PartnerREF=&prodID=12375). It features complete Interstate exit information, including Gas, Food, Lodging, Medical Services, Retail Stores, and More at Every U.S. Interstate Exit in the Contiguous 48 States.

I maintain trip records with a program called Gulliver. (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=609188D1-CF18-A787-A98995D68C9FCA62&PartnerREF=&prodID=42901) With Gulliver you can keep your travel plan details in one convenient place, including:

- Track airline, hotel and rental car reservations
- Store confirmation numbers and ticket prices
- Beam itineraries to other Palm owners
- Posts flights to the Date Book
- Travel vendor database with phone numbers
- Access frequent travel IDs and phone numbers
- Store hotel reservation information by city

The Award IDs feature of Gulliver saves all your frequent flier and award IDs for each airline, hotel and car rental company. There are other more sophisticated travel programs available, but I've used this one for many years and find it quite useful.

Time to get serious here, folks. This one's easy. NetFront 3.1 plus wireless connectivity in the form of WiFi or BT and a bookmark to your favorite local theater in Moviefone.com. Instant theater listings!

Kim

Actually, I do that via plucker usually.... I download the theatre listings and movie links to my handheld every morning. Along with the morning paper (20). I convert measurements every day (air craft speeds) (23). I have been known to use it as a flash-light at night (38)... *blush* everyone uses excel right? (40) keep track of my library (books, DVDs, CDs) (31). manage my bills (35)

now for the oddities....
keep track of my fuel economy (Fuellog)
Take pictures (TH55 camera)
Schedule my vacation (actually looked up, browsed the campgrounds, and booked a space) Toured national parks via browser decididing on where to go too.
I wrote poetry in word
I reviewed my technical papers from previous conferences in PDF
Kept track of bugs in my software (hey, I am human)
played solitair
read a comic book (samurai cat)

For the newcomers to this thread, the deal is read the article "40 Things To Do With A Pocket PC In A Week" at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Sep04/40things.asp

From the original instructions on page 1:
Okay members the challenge is this: Pick a "Thing" on the list in the story and post how you do it on your device.

Rules Rules, please respond to one "Thing" at a time because my attention span is very short. If a thread has covered it, then just comment and provide the link.

Note that we are still missing 3, 8, 9, 17, 19, 24, 27, 30, 31, 34, 36

SamCat - please reenter your items separately so we can get the count straight. Wytnucls, your item is counted as #5 on the list below. sigelang, I have included yours but ... :(

Updated list:

1: Joel
2: Running Woman

38: depret, Ezra4no1

Not on the 40 things list (including the software used where specified):

41: Vidge:"I managed my accounting practice." SmartList to go

43: Joel: "I remote-controlled my Powerbook via Bluetooth" Salling Clicker

So since Wytnucls got moved to #5, the number is off by one. Next new item should be 53

edit - I screwed up and missread the article :o :o So sorry Wytnucls :( (Why oh why did I think #5 was taking pictures??) Anyway, so as not to start the numbering all over, when I do the list tomorrow, I'll put it in with SamCat's 54 below.

P.S.“Relic PDA Device” indeed!

"ScaryBear Software (http://www.scarybearsoftware.com) offers a variety of applications, including Tricorder, which adds a “Tricorder” display to your Pocket PC, just like the Tricorder Mr. Spock used to carry! My favorite thing about it is the “SCAN 1” button. Press it and a Palm OS device is displayed, with the caption “Relic PDA Device.” This little novelty program has brought me much joy."

I do not know him but if anyone does please let him know that I for one have enjoyed the fun his article has generated here at 1src.

Let's finish the list today, if possible, so Joel can possibly get something out as soon as possible. Just a thought.

#8. I read the bible

Back on my T665C I wanted to have the bible and downloaded KJV old and new as a reference (google and the internet are great). eReader was perfect but I did not want to pay for the Pro upgrade to support 320x480 because I did not do that much eBook reading. Doc2Go 6.0 came to the rescue because it would read the bible chapters I downloaded.

I have the KJV old by chapter. I also have the old and new in 5 big files for searchability.

I was hoping other members would take this one but I am a poor substitute.

P.S. Vidge, did I miss a picture somewhere? I typically use only the mobile site for 1src so maybe I missed a signature or thread. You are welcome by the way. In the past, I have started some that died on the vine and I have always been a bit reluctant to start any threads lately.

P.S.S.
I covered #24 in post #17.

#34. I tuned a guitar?
No musical bones here but try the following. Downloaded it with NetFront, installed with ClieFile and played some notes. If I needed to tune my instrument I think I would be set.

"ScaleTune is a versatile musical scale, chord, interval, melody & note trainer/player, a tuner, a metronome, and a timer/stopwatch with lap functionality. Absolutely unique, absolutely a must! And a bargain.

English and Finnish versions included!"

34: I tuned a guitar!

Using PhonTuner (OS5) professional vocal & guitar tuner available at PalmGear, I tuned a guitar. This is actually a pretty nice piece of software. In addition to tuning a guitar, it makes a capella (sp?) singing easy since it can tell you what note you are singing.
