Hi.

This is my first post. I am really considering buying a TH55, because it has almost all I want. I have an SJ22, so it is a big improvement. But today I read about the new line of iPAQs HP is releasing soon. One of them is the RX3415. I don't know what would be better: A TH55 or that new iPaq. I can't decide because the ipaq is very similar to the th55: it has a wi-fi, bluetooth, 1.3mp camera, windows mobile 2003 se. If you want you can read about it on pdabuyersguide.com.

As you can see, the iPaq has bluetooth, a better camera, it is smaller, lighter and they are the same price. But it doesn't have the gorgeous 320*480 screen of the th55. And we don't know anything about the battery life. And finally, it isn't Sony.

What can you tell me? Has anyone had previous experience with Pocket PC (I haven't), ipaqs and clies to give their point of view? I appreciate anything that can help.

Thanks,

David

I've been thinking the same thing. It's a tough choice.

I think Pocket PC is a better platform at this point in the game... spent $250 on a Toshiba e755 that's super fast and just better at fundamentals... the new ipaq's seem like a waste of money, if you want a camera get an Asus... do the research, $ for $ PPC is a better value

To add to your confusion there's the Fujitsu/Siemens 720 and V70 - when it comes. Both are beautifully spec'ed with VGA screen. I still love my TH55 (with all my software investments being a good reason to) but reckon will get at least 12-18 months of use from it before needing to upgrade. By that time, I am sure there'll be more new ones in the market.

Well, I went through a similar decision this past week. I had to choose between the ipaq 4155 or TH55. I ended up choosing the TH55. Palm just has so much more available software than PocketPC. Before making up my decision, I tried to look for a PocketPC alternative to all the software that I have for Palm. I could only find a PocketPC equivalent for about 1/4 of my Palm software. I was kinda bummed 'cause I really want integrated bluetooth and wifi in my PDA, but oh well... There isn't such a thing as a perfect PDA, in the end, most people will have to make compromises.

You should stop by a local shop that carries both Palm and PocketPC devices and try them out if you can. It all comes down to personal preference.

Hi,

can anyone tell me some pros and cons of the two systems? I have been using PalmOS for years, happily but my next PDA must have WIFI, BT, a proper screen (not a UX like misemovies one) 320x480 or even 480x600 and most of all usable keyboard (Zaurus 860 like)...

Talking about the Zaurus: what does it mean when it says open system Linux based PDA? Could I install any operating system?

cheers Nicolas

Don't know about time, but is 920 mAh battery. How big is the th55's?

It is not how big the battery is, it is how it is used. The TH55 uses a variable speed CPU and specialized hardware for graphics and audio/video processing. This allows the TH55 to conserve battery power when you are just reading the display and not doing much of anything.

If you play an intense game for hours on end, or use a 3rd party MP3 player or video player, then the CPU will be forced to run a full speed, and your battery life will be short (maybe even as low a the Dell reported above).

But if you use it for normal PDA stuff, with some gaming, or us the build-in MP3 player or video player, then you will find that the TH55 will give you 8, 10, 12 hours of continuous use. How long depends on what you are making it do.
