4.1 has been known to cause fatal errors when syncing

I downloaded the latest palm desktop from palm and it works great my NR70V. No problems at all.

Here's a procedure to install Palm Desktop 4.10 that worked for me:

1) Copy USBPort.dll from the Palm or Sony Handheld directory on your PC to somewhere else on your PC
2) Install Palm Desktop 4.10
3) Exit Hotsync on your PC (probably in your system tray)
4) Copy USBPort.dll back to where you originally found it--Palm or Sony Handheld directory
5) Restart Hotsync from your Startup folder, or you can reboot.
6) If you use BackupBuddy, run it before you hotsync so that it can fix its registry entries. Same for InstallBuddy if you use it.
7) Reinstall MS Export to get the Sony CLIE MGMS USB Device driver that MS Import needs to work.

Some have suggested rebooting, but I found that unnecessary under WinXP Pro unless you have third-party conduits that need a reboot to reinitialize. I think AvantGo and ePocrates are in the latter category. Also note that Hotsync keeps USBPort.dll open, so you won't be able to copy the required file back unless you exit Hotsync first.

This procedure worked great for me and my T665C. The big advantage is that Palm Desktop 4.10 allows plugins.

You don't neet to uninstall, just follow tanker_bob details and it will work just fine.

Uhhh...not quite. Tried installing new 4.1 and it would not let me continue until I let it uninstall the previous (Sony) version of desktop.

So backup everything on the PDA, twice, then uninstall old desktop, install new desktop (and follow the suggestion switch-out noted above).

A few interesting observations:

On my Win2000 machine, the above step results in a dead sync...nothing happens (system recognizes a new found hardware, etc., but no sync takes place). If, however, I leave the newly installed usbport.dll alone (had to uninstall/reinstall to try this), the sync works fine.

Secondly, since I didn't have a PalmDesktop from a CD and downloaded a version from the Palm Web site, I discovered this *lovely* that the Palm folks provide (at no extra charge!):

"The downloadable version of Palm™ Desktop does not include the conduit to synchronize with Microsoft Outlook. "

It goes on to say that only way to have Outlook conduits is by installing the Palm Desktop software from a distribution CD (that came with the Palm units). I do have such a beast from my Handera at home (but older version), and so will try that and then upgrade the desktop software.

All this to avoid Intellisync's annoying verifications of all Outlook stuff trying to sync.

It's possible that the problem w/Palm's USBPort.dll is limited to WinXP, couldn't say. As I said in my post, that procedure worked for me whereas just installing the desktop did not. Every case has some variation, though. Glad you got yours to work. :)

I installed Palm Desktop 4.14 with my Sony Clie N610C. It seemed to install ok, but when I tried to hotsynch, I got a FATAL ERROR on the handheld, and a message to RESET.

Any suggestions?

I used to have Palm Desktop 4.1 installed, and it worked fine except that about 1 out of 15 times, it wouldn't hotsynch. Then I would have to cancel, try again.
