 Hello, I just got the NZ90 a few months ago, and do love it. It is a little bulky but does do a lot of things. Except memory is a problem. I have downloaded a program called Mapopolis North America. Download a few county and street maps onto my Memory Stick (which is just a 128MB MS) and when I try to run the program it wants to move the maps from the MS to the internal memory and freezes up because I don't have enough memory to hold it. What can I do?? Does anybody else have a solution by chance. Would really like to be able to use this program. Does anybody have a way to increase the internal memory, I have asked Sony and there reply is "NO" can't be done. Now I'm tempted to get the TH55 or even go to a Pocket PC to get the more memory. But I would like to get this one working for me...
Thanks for your time and help...

I recently received my "new" refurbished NZ90 and after loading all the programs from my old Tungsten T2, immediately encountered the same problem - extremely low memory.

I solved the problem by loading JackFlash Beta (Brayder Software - had used this with my old NR70V) and claimed 3+MB of free flash memory. I moved all the programs I didn't want to lose (in the event of battery failure, hard reset, etc.) to flash memory.

I also use SilverScreen Launcher which seems to run programs flawlessly from the memory stick (other launchers do, as well, but I've had great luck with SS and stick with it).

I have both Mapopolis and the associated maps on the memory stick. It runs with no memory issues.

Hope this helps a bit. There are ways to get around Sony's unbelievably poor decision to limit the NZ90 to 11MB of usable memory!

JackFlash (Brayder Software) is available from their website (www.brayder.com) or can be purchased from Handango (www.handango.com). The price is $19.95 and well worth the extra flash memory you can claim. A reasonably good explanation of this program can be found at www.tankerbob.com/palm/. Click the JackFlash/JackSprat icon on the left side of the screen. JackSprat allows you to reclaim even more memory by removing flash-installed programs loaded by the manufacturer. I used this program on my NR70V, but have decided not to try it on the NZ90 - if not used correctly, you can be in for some major problems trying to get your handheld back to factory specs. Brayder Software is very good about answering questions you might submit to them.

SilverScreen Launcher (Pocket Sensei) is available from their website (www.pocketsensei.com) or can be purchased from Handango. The price is $24.95. I believe it can be loaded on a trial-basis.

Another launcher option would be ZLauncher, also available from Handango. A lot more "bells and whistles", but I think a little less intuitive and I have had a few "running programs from memory stick" issues with this launcher.

PPC would be a massive step in the wrong direction as all programs require a lot more space, also the screen ain't great.

If you do change handheld for memory reasons then you can't go wrong with a T3 - it has 64 (51 usable). Maybe recomend a £40 powersled to go with it.

what i think is happening is that the maps on your memory card are too big for the amount of RAM you currently have available.

if your map is 4MB on the card, and you only have 2MB free of RAM, the map won't load

try to liberate some space from your RAM if that is the case.
mapopolis transfers maps to ram, then deletes from ram when you are finished with them.

Hi biometrep

Jack flash works well with my NZ and I also use this in conjunction with PowerRun (ver 1.3 I think) from http://www.simple-palm.com/ which swaps progs to and from the mem stick or CF card if you happen to have one. I'm sure SilverScreen works well too but I've not tried it.

JackSprat doesnt work with the NZ90 so dont bother with this.

Cheers

Thanks everybody for your help. I will try... we shall see. I just wish I could get more memory internal with it. But might end up having to go get the TH55 or the T3. Both have lots more memory than this one. But I shall try the JackFlash and possibly the ZLauncher or PowerRun. I'll look at them. Thanks again...

Hi Michael,

JackFlash is good, but you may get better mileage out of a program called msmount, and they would both work alongside one another if you chose to use both. msmount is also freeware.

msmount allows read-only palm databases to be placed on the card, then tricks the Palm into thinking they are in RAM. It works fantastically well as long as nothing tries to write to the database that is actually located on the card. Im pretty sure that'll be the case with your maps... Find it at: http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/msmount.shtml, along with other locations I'm sure (Internet search on msmount+palm).

regards,
Darren.
