hm from my point of view treo ace has two major problems, no wifi & the external antenna. I'd go over the antenna if there was wifi. hell even motorola has now wifi enabled phone.

Now why is this $549? Where are the < $99 Palm OS Smartphones PalmSource said someone would produce?

Actually I like the antenna, it makes look high tech and cool. Beside, all the gadgets that I have with and antenna perform better in fringe areas. As the Wifi no need for really.

Since the Treo can use GPRS to go online, I dont see the need to have the WiFi. Further more, if you use the Treo to connect WiFi, how long do you think you can surf? Maybe just 10-20 mins and your battery flat; no call can be made anymore.

Interesting analogy Nomad, didn't think about juice drainage.
have you guys seen the new Motorola smartphone coming out in Q3 of this year?

http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details/0,,66,00.html

and the new Nokia smarthphone coming around the same time both for the GSM market, so here in the U.S. meaning Cingular, AT&T, and t-Mobile.

I still would prefer the Palmone "Ace" (or 610,6.. whatever it will be called) what do you folks think?

I don't know what people have against antenas, but I think that devices with antennas look cooler than devices w/o them

WiFi doesn't HAVE to kill the battery. Try using WiFi on a TH55 sometime to see a demonstration. I swear you could surf the net with the backlight on the brightest setting for 8 hours if you wanted to.

Just my $0.02.

I'm not sure if I believe it, but there's some credible posters over at Hofo's who are adamant the Ace will support 1xEvDo. If that turns out to be true, I'm pretty sure you won't miss that battery guzzling wifi! ;)

I think anything petruding from the base chassis is just more liable to break the hell off. I hate external antennas. If they made it a bit more sub like, rather than a hook for your trousers, then it would stil look cool, but not have the leverage to rip out something it shouldnt :) If that makes sense. :)

The external antenna is why the Treo 600's SAR is so high. A conformal (patch) antenna on the back side (e.g. Sony Ericsson's products) tend to prevent heating up your head. Also the Treo is not a flip phone with the flip acting is a similar manner.

That said I also agree that anything sticking out of the base chassis is just waiting to break off.

Many have said why does one need WiFi when you have GPRS, plus the power drain is too great.

Several points:

1) Emitting 600 mW to the GSM network is way more power consumption than the 100 mW employed by 802.11.
2) BroadCom's AirForce One single chip 802.11g is so low power one can consider employing it in just about anything (e.g. cameras, etc). In fact this is BroadCom's vision and they are not alone.
3) There are just too many places to obtain access to WiFi network connectivity to ignore the standard. In fact I think it is great than I can hotsync my UX-50 via 802.11 without plugging it in.

I'm still waiting for a Treo with WiFi. PalmOne should listen to the consumers, not the network operators who want to boost their data mode usage. With sales at record levels for the Treo, this is very unlikely.

I wished these companies (ie palmone ) had their R & D guys/gals read these forums and see exacty what peolpe want. then gain VSC is right until sales are up they don't even care. It's all about $$$$.

I know what you mean, Ardy. The features and form factor of the TH55 was already discussed here when Sony was just releasing the NX series. ;) If Sony had enough courage then, maybe they would not have left the Clie line by now.

You know, they have the technology to make the perfect PDA, but since we're paying to buy what's out there they got the upper hand. At least until the competition bring something out to scare them.
I personelly like many PDA's ouut there with the Sony clie going out, my next favorite are the Treo Ace or the Garmin Ique (the up coming model)
I just wish they come out soon.
Cheers,

Seems the price will be cheaper than Treo 600 when it first launched.

It will be good to us.

I can't wait. I love it so much that although i'm a Nextel user I still will get the Treo Ace.

Same here. Nextel will lose my business as soon as the Treo Ace is available!

I have to keep my Nextel since around here(San Francisco Bay Area) it was a great reception, beside it is the onlt carrier offering "free incoming calls"
I love the Treo Ace (from what I hear) so much that I will still get it thru either Cingular or ATT. I will use it mostly for the data use (e-mail, browsing, sms).
