Has anyone used Solus pro GPS software on thier NX? Specifically the Topo maps. Also how does the Street software compare with Mapopolis? Thanks in advance

I am personally really happy with GPSPilot. I used it with my Palm Vx, and it looks pretty sweet for my NX as soon as I get a GPS unit for it!

I currently own a nx and I am planning on travelling to europe this summer. Does anyone have any good suggestions on hardware to use as well as software? Thanks in advance!

I ordered this unit but haven't received it yet. I can forsee a problem with not enough memory in RAM as I think the maps you're using (and the program itself) must be in RAM when you're using it. I have Mapopolis moved to memory stick via PowerRun but of course it loads it to RAM when I call it up. I've already had problems of not being able to have all the maps I want accessable!

I have used Delorme's XMap, it is LoRes and I wasn't at all impressed. It is used with USA Street Atlas.

If your coming to Europe Tom Tom Citymaps are a good bet http://www.tomtom.com

Good street coverage and EVERY city and town in Europe covered on the CD... Not sure of the OS5 compatability though.

Should check the demo.

GPSPilot just came out with new updates available for OS5 yesterday:

I've tried a whole bunch of mapping software for GPS receivers.

Solus Pro 2 and 3 just plain suck. Lo Res and has a terrible interface. Slooooowww

Xmap is LoRes as well with a better interface than Solus, but not much. You can't highlight roads or places. It does tell you phone numbers and stuff for locations that are on the map when you tap on them...but they don't get highlighted, so don't forget where you tapped....oh yeah..... and slooowww.

Rand McNally Streetfinder is funky with the Menu bar on the right side. Detail is okay, but just not easy to use. Resolution is not that great either.

Quo Vadis is not fully compatible with the Clie SJ models...nough said.

GPS pilot is pretty neat with the ability to import your own maps and stuff. Resolution is very nice since you can import whatever resolution you want. GPS features are nice. Don't like the graphical interface "gauges" though.

Fugawi is another one of those import your own map type of things. Very nice resolution. Even a client side app to help you get the map on your handheld.

Mapopolis is pretty decent. It supports alternate fonts for hires and allows you to zoom, pan, rectangle box zoon, landmarks, highlight streets, add detail remove detail, get directions, have favorites, set colors, and do gps. All maps are on the web for download when you pay. I use this one currently. The worst thing about it is that you need to know the county of the place you are going to in order to download the map. Or you can just download the entire state county maps and load them, but there isn't enough memory to run them all congruently. The major road maps are small and nice for long journeys. SanfordTurbo,

Have you tried the TomTom maps ? If so, what GPS setup (hardware, cables etc) are you using that makes it work along with all the other suggestions you have made. I'd be grateful if you can also advise of URLS for thoise hardware items you are currently using incl. model numbers etc.

Thanking you kindly.

From what I understand, the Tom Tom maps are for the Pocket PC. But I could be wrong.

Get you some cables here! (http://pc-mobile.net/clie.htm)

GPS cables HERE! (http://pc-mobile.net/gps.htm)

GPS and car power combo cables!!! (http://pc-mobile.net/gpswp.htm)

Thanks for the swift reply !

Oh okay ... I thought I saw a thread saying they were using the TomTom maps and were the best available ??

Thanks for the cables' links. What GPS receiver(s) are you using ... ? I'm guessing I only need to buy just the one cable, from the NX to the receiver ? If you can tell me which GPS model you have, can you tell me which cable you bought. I'll then go ahead and order precisely the same.

Thanking you kindly.

I emailed the folks over at PC-Mobile and they confirmed my cable before purchase.

Here is my email:

>I want to hook up my Sony Clie T665C to my Garmin GPS III in my car.
>I want to charge the clie in the car.
>I want to synch and charge with a usb cable.
>

>Here is what I've come up with: PSTUC, GPRST6. Will the PSTUC work with
>the car cigarette adapter from the GPRSN7 kit?

yes

========

What a great reply: YES. Simple, but effective. LOL Basically their site is full of stuff and hard to figure out what you need. Garmin makes 2 types of connector styles. Mine is the Round type.....so GPRSN7 is the combo set to get.

Official word: Tom Tom does not work support Palm OS 5, and I have personally tried it on my NX (it DID work great on my N760), but it simply does not work.

I am sorry about this because it was a great program! I have asked them repeatedly, but they are not interested in Palm OS 5 at the time.

I am now looking for an alternative for Europe, but haven't found it yet...

From what I have read on previous posts, it is only really useful in Japan (or Singapore, cannot remember which).

Hoping you still have the receipt, I suggest sending it back. I am actively pursuing the hardware/softare mentioned above which can be used rest of the world :)

Try our Compass application. Choose 'Sony MS' GPS.
It should work.

My understanding is that the Sony MSGPS doesn't output in NMEA format. Does your GPSPilot application address that?

GPSPILOT

The Sony MS GPS is NOT NMEA. It has its own protocol, but Sony has published an API to access it.

The code is there, under the Sony MS GPS option, but I have not fully tested it as I do not have one MS GPS, but a GPSpilot user said it works fine. (minus a wrong altitude and date to be fixed shortly...).

If by chance you have one MS GPS, try 'Compass' and let me know.

Well, that'd be cool if there was finally a solution allowing the Sony GPS stick to work. To bad I bought an NZ and the memstick location doesn't seem the best for GPS signal reception. Who knows? Be worth a try if GPSPilot does work with it. I read thru your site a bit. Looks like a good product. Have to load up your demo and see what I think.
I'd love to hear of success!!!

I would guess that you should install the japanese drivers first and then run GPSPilot's Compass.

Nothing... i instaled the driveres without Navin Pocket that comes with the cd as standard. I'll try one more time with Navin included in the instalation but i dought it cause that's what i had before. I emailed the developer of Compass so hopefully he'll put some light to this.

Database name ‘MsGpsDrv’
Creator ID ‘SpGp’

Install on the Palm, and it should work ...

I just bought the latest StreeFinder release on CD and let me tell you - it is GREAT. I have no use for GPS, so I have not tested that part - but what you get is a huge map of the US and Canada with good detail on your PC. Whatever you zoom to on your screen you can submit to your handheld.

It supports 320x320, and it allows you to have the maps stored on the memory stick. I put a 5MB map on the stick via PiDirect (it seems much faster with PiDirect than just loading on the stick, but it still works either way) and I was able to zoom in and out of an area 60miles x 60miles down to the side-street names.

THIS is what I have been looking for!

You can even do trip routing.

Take a look at the demo. Put the demo map on the MS via PiDirect and be prepared to be amazed!

Now what?
