Alright, I just got my Sena case, so I'm ready to jettison the TH55's plastic cover. Now, which of the hinge covers is the best? Brando? Global Source? Any other candidates?

By the way, the Sena is great! :D

One of the main differences appears to be that the Brando ones are an opaque black, and the GS ones are kind of a transparent charcoal color. A lot of people seemed to be disappointed that the GS ones didn't blend as well with the body of the TH.

I for one got the Brandos but only because I was ordering other stuff from there at the same time. They fit really well and are almost invisible, but I think the GS ones look nice in the pictures. I guess the difference is that the Brandos will blend in with the TH and the GS will be more decorative (or distracting, depending on how you look at it).

They look like they're easy to make from a $0.01 piece of rubber or plastic...

I have to admit that after staring at the gaping holes in my TG50 where the flip cover attaches, I'm not sure that it'll really bother me to have those "little" slots in my soon-to-arrive TH55.

But we'll see, I'm such a perfectionist that I'm sure I'll be ordering up some plugs like everyone else...

You may find you don't mind the holes, but I must say I didn't think I would either from other people's pics, but when I got the TH and took off the cover, they're bigger than I thought. But YMMV.

There is another fundamental difference between GS' and Brando's plugs. That is the plug hole shape. GS's has a slot, while Brando's has a hole.

The slot design allows tight fit on the sides. Mounting becomes easy. You can just slide the plug into the hinge hole. It looks neat and flush w/o leaving any gap, as if there is no hinge in there, just showing two lines.

The hole design needs an angle mounting and forcing the hinge to retract into the middle, just like the original flip cover. That method requires a slight gap on the sides, like the original filp cover. I'm affraid you might bugger up the hinge tips when forcing the hinges in. I don't think that remaining gap will look good either. Luckily the plug is black, so the remaining gap is not too noticeable.

Thanks for the feedback!

It turns out the black GS plugs are sold out, but GS is now selling the Brando plugs, so I went with them.

I have absolutely no gap with brando's plugs.

Also the color is really very very close to the th55's one

How about building your own using the original plugs that came with it.
Just unscrew it from the plastic cover and attach them to any small plastic or metal.

I don't either. Because the plugs are rubbery, you can bend them out of shape to get them in and they snap back to the perfect size.

Ah. Rubbery plugs! That's why. Thanks for mentioning.

Are the Cap Go Go Cover Plugs on Global Source the same thing as the Brando ones?

DanT says that these ones have the holes and are not as good as the Global Source ones. Also that there is a gap between the plugs and the slots that they go into. Is this what yours is like? Thanks.

I got the "Cap Go Go Cover Plug for Clie TH55 #16214" that I bought at Global Source.

They have a hole instead of a slot and are made of soft ruber that you can bend and move in place so that no gap is visible. I choose on a price basis so I guess mines are the most simple ones, but I really like them.

Yes, they are the same thing. I got mine earlier this week, and I'm very happy with them. Combined with the Sena case, I'm finally happy with the look of my TH55. :D

I was assuming that the Brando's plugs are as hard as the GS plugs, which was a bad assumption. Rubbery plugs are certainly flexible enough to squeeze the holes over the hinge rods. I would get the Brando's too had I known this. At the time the GS plugs were the first one out in the market.

So in your personal opinion, do you think the Cap Go Go plugs (available at Brando and Global Source) are a better choice than the global source brand?

Don't know as I have not seen the Brando plugs. The GS plugs are still pretty tight fit to my TH55. See pix below.

I ordered the "Cap Go Go" plugs from Brando, and am VERY impressed.

The rubber material allows you to kind of squeeze them into place over the hinge nubs. At first I thought that they were sticking out a little bit too much, but after lettign them "settle" for a day or so they are snug, fill the entire slot, and match the casing finish very nicely.

Very highly recommended!

I found the same thing as Yuriv with the "Cap Go Go" plugs from Brando. They apply easily--thanks to the pliable rubber material, and after a day or so, any height discrepancy due to installation disappears. They look great. If you don't believe me, check my credit card receipts: I am now up to six cases, all but one of them by Vaja. I care what my device looks like!

Why can't you just upload them to your Gallery in 1src.com and post the images here. Then there would be no waiting.

I guess only I could see them before, but they should be viewable for you now.

I haven't done the gallery thing before--maybe I'll try that next time!

Simply GORGEOUS.

Would you say it feels rather bulky or slim in your shirt or pants pocket, jumpyg?

I don't usually put it in my pants, but I have a few times, and its pretty slim. That's the CASE that I'm talking about! :D

I had a Sony case for my S320 that I thought was pretty slim, but this new Sena is quite a bit smaller. I was really worried I wasn't going to find a case I liked, but this is pretty close to perfect!

Is it hard to re-attach the flip cover once it is removed? Can it cause any damage when re-attaching it? Thanks.

DanT
07-23-2004, 07:57 AM
Yes. The square shaft will slowly get rounded, especially on the tip corners. You don't want to do this too often. You can rock it left to right and feel the play, not solid like before.

I just took it off after 2 month of use and would put it back only when it is ready for resale. Got tired of flipping back and forth and the bulky feeling in my pants pocket.
