Hi

I hope someone can help, does anyone know of a converter besides ConvertLit that can convert lit files, I have tried a million times and just can't work out how to work that converter (I realise that probably makes me sound stupid :o ). I do have quite allot of lit files i'd love to be able to convert to PDF, PDB, HTML, anything really besides lit, as I have a palm and can't read them on my palm.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Are you bringing up the MS DOS command window to use it? It will not work by just clicking on it in windows.

I always put it and the drm5hook.dll in the main C: directory. Then type C:\clit and it will give you the instructions for using it.

These are the instructions straight from the program:
This program has three modes of operation:
First, is ** EXPLOSION **, or the expanding of a .LIT file into an
OEBPS compliant package.
To explode, you type: clit <litfile.lit> <directory to explode into>\
For Example:
clit ebook-propietary.lit ebook-oebps\
If the directory does not exist, you MUST put a trailing \ or / after it!

Second, is the DOWNCONVERTING of a .LIT file down to "Sealed",
or DRM1 format for reading on handheld devices.
To downconvert, you type: clit <litfile.lit> <newlitfile.lit>
For Example:
clit "drm5 ebook.lit" ebook-open.lit

Third, is the INSCRIBING of a .LIT file which allows you to label
your ebooks. This is very similar to downconverting, you just add
a third argument: clit <litfile.lit> <newlitfile.lit> <inscription>
For example:
clit ebook.lit inscribed.lit "the Mixed-Up Library of Basil Frankweiler"

DRM5 is supported IF you have an activated copy of MS Reader.
You must run this program ON THE SAME MACHINE that is licensed for the
content. This is a tool for **YOUR OWN FAIR USE** and not for stealing
other people's ebooks.

Please do not use this program to distrbute illegal copies of ebooks.
... that would make Baby Jesus sad.

Convert Lit is the only option and its pretty easy to use, but DOS was the first OS I learned on so maybe its just easy for me.

If your book is 1984 and the file name is 1984.lit for example. Put it in the directory the Convert Lit is in, bring up the DOS Command Prompt box and type:

clit 1984.lit 1984\

It will make a directory called 1984 and put all the files in it. From there you can use Mobipocket publisher or whatever program you want to convert it for use on the Palm OS.

Hi, I am trying to do the same thing. I get it downconverted with no problem and when I transfer it it errors out. I am using a treo 650 which uses the palm reader.

When I change the extenstion to .pdb, I see it convert and transfer, but I can't find the file anywhere on my treo.

Can anyone assist me.

I realize this is an old thread... But I have found a relatively easy way to get LIT books into my PALM OS..

If anyone is still interested in this, please post to this thread and I will detail the procedure.

ConvertLit GUI works by double clicking on .lit files to convert them... can't get much simpler than that.

Well, you still need to use CONVERT LIT to convert to HTML...

But I could never get the formatting to work right when converting from the HTML (or the TXT) to something readable by the PALM OS..

So, I used a program called PrimoPDF to convert the HTML to PDF format. Then I installed the PALM OS ADOBE PDF reader onto my PALM OS and my Win2K Workstation. Then I just run the Adobe HotSync thingy on my Win2k workstation and it puts the newly created PDF onto my PALM and viol'a...

I have a nearly perfectly formatted book on my Palm OS...

I don't have the links for PrimoPDF or Palm OS Adobe handy, but I am sure they can be GOOGLED...

Copistar will export lit to pdf.
Go to http://www.copistar.com

Yes Copistar converts to pdf but does so by taking screen grabs, so the text can be harder to read on a palm. I was able to convert a protected .lit eBook using ConvertLit to downconvert it and then the ABClit converter to change the format to .pdb for the Palm. Of note, I had to use the older version 2.02 of ABClit (found on the homepage for the program) as the newer version 2.04 errored. Thanks to all who posted.

I am curious what other palm ereading people think of this?
mjbookmaker will turn any txt & graphics into a Java ebook, playable on most peoples phones, with a TOC and many functions on the number keypads.
Then to make it playable on the palm, just run it through jartoprc_w in the bin folder of the tools folder of the IBM JVM folder. No reader is required - it is then an application. For me the jartoprc_w does not like more than 16 colours for the icon & similarly for the flash screen it needs to be index colour with not to many colours.
But is now possible to bluetooth an ebook to most peoples phones.
It is a convenient way to self publish.
Re the previous post I am not near a PC - but I wonder if word 07 Will convert lit to txt. Word 07 can be downloaded for free.

PalmFiction (http://sourceforge.net/projects/palmfiction) can read html, text, MS Word, RTF, palmdoc and other formats natively. Of course, it doesn't preserve formatting... for that you need to take a convertlit'd document and convert it to Plucker or iSilo format on the PC. I'd recommend against converting to PDF, as PDF is designed to preserve screen layout, and Palm screens can't generally display 8.5x11" documents very well.
