View Full Version : Mac friendly Palm OS apps?

I know there's a plethora of palm apps out there, but, being a newbie, I have some questions:
Most apps don't seem to have a .sit downloader (just .zip) so I can't use them? or I just can't install them?
I could feasibly install them under VPC right?
if they don't require a ...conduit? A conduit is just something that let's you hotsync the program right? to back it up or update listings?
AND...
any great mac friendly palm apps (other than MissingLink?)?
Is their a mac version of PowerRun (lets you run programs off the memory stick?)
any other tips on being a Mac-palm user (not only that, but a Mac user on a Clie!) in the windoze-palm centric world?
thanks!

Stuffit Expander - which you should have on your system already will open .zip files. Just drag the file to the expander icon and drop it. If you don't have it, its available at http://www.alladinsys.com.

no need to. See above.

You need to have the install conduit installed to install programs and data to your pda. Open the hotsync program, look under the Hotsyn->conduit settings menu to see if you have it and if it is turned on.
If the program you have for your PDA will not need to sync any data to your mac, just be backed up, you don't need a conduit for it. However, if you need to sync data with, say Quicken for example, then the supplier of the S/W must supply a conduit that talks to the PDA and to the datafile on your mac.

my favorites:
Pocket Quicken (http://www.landware.com) syncs directly to your quicken file.
Documents to go (http://www.dataviz.com) to sync excel and word files.
Datebk5: greatly enhanced databook program will sync with your palm desktop calendar but also with Now up to Date and Now Contact. http://www.pimlicosoftware.com.
SilverScreen: Better, much better, launcher than the Palm or the Sony provided one. Also makes management of data on MS much better. http://www.pocketsensei.com.
Is their a mac version of PowerRun (lets you run programs off the memory stick?)
This has nothing to do with the mac other than just to install it. Silverscreen does this and mmore.

Hi!
Have a look at this page of MarkSpace... it is quite interesting:

My favourites are SplashData's SplashID and SplashPhoto. Excellent database for personal information and picture viewer respectively, and *very* nicely integrated with OSX with conduits and Mac-side software. Both work perfectly for me. Also, Vindigo (city information service) works very nicely.
I agree with pretty much everything that's been said, but would add:
1. .ZIP is a compression format, nothing more. It is no more a PC thing than it is a Mac thing. It should open (with StuffIt Expander) simply by double-clicking the .ZIP file.
2. In case this is at all unclear, virtually anything that doesn't require a conduit will work just fine with your setup. And most (decent) programs that do require conduits provide them for Macs as well as PC's. A notable exception is AvantGo, but even they have a conduit for OS 9.
3. There are certain advantages to using a Mac with your Palm. If you use categories with DateBk5, for example, these will sync to and from your Mac (preserving, for example, color coding of events or other similar attributes). If you sync to Palm Desktop under Windows, however, this information is not synced.
4. You may not need Missing Sync. Many Clie models work just fine without it, as long as you are using Palm Desktop 4.0 for OS X or PD 2.6.3 for OS 9. I've owned a couple of different Clie models and have never needed it, so you may wish to try syncing before spending the money. Others may point out that Missing Sync still offers some other features, and they are correct.
5. In Palm Desktop 4.0, simply double-clicking on a palm file (such as a .PDB) will automatically add it to the installer. Just good to know.

I've had no problems with WordSmith. The only thing that takes some getting used to is remembering to look in the WordSmith folder for documents instead of the Documents folder.

Hello JohnJ80 and anyone else,
Just bought a Sony CliŽ PEG-UX50.
Do I understand you correctly that I could place the four-part (huge) Mapopolis maps
for Los Angeles ( the platinum ones with all the works ) along with the app itself in the Sony MemoryStick PRO (256 MB) in my Sony CliŽ PEG-UX50 and search addresses across map sections entirely within the Sony Stick , without manually shuffling map sections in and out of RAM from SonyStick--- using SilverScreen ?
(My last PDA was a Visor Prism mod to 32 MB RAM --- I had to shuffle map sections
to go across section boundaries.)
Have you done this ?
Great news to me if so :) !!!
I use an
iMac FP G4 800 MHz / 1 GB RAM / OS X Panther / 802.11b Airport card/
Airport Extreme base (802.11g)
iBook Dual USB G3 800 MHz / OS X Panther / 802.11b Airport card
BTW , I have yet to install Palm OS , any updaters, etc. in my Mac's.
Any advice on what to install, how, etc ? --- I am a bit overwhelmed by it all.
Thanx ahead,
---gooddog

TimeCopy, with the Mac conduit, is a great utility to keep your CLIE's clock in sync with your Mac's clock, which is assumed to keepits clock in sync with the world at large via the Date&Time system preferences.
... an addenda to "elo's" message:
Some EXE files are self-extracting ZIP files. These, unlike other EXE applications and installers, can be successfully un-Zipped on a Mac by manually decompressing them with Stuffit/Unstuff. Double-clicking won't call Stuffit automatically; you have to lauch it and point it to the desired EXE manually (D&D to the Unstuff icon usually works).
