Hey peoples,
I noticed 9.95 Soft's BibleReader on PalmGear: http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=6B56E56D-8C73-45CB-BC87899170E26D53&prodID=47812
Now, this program appears to be Asaisofts's http://www.asaisoft.com FREEWARE BibleReader simply renamed. Can anyone confirm this? I notice there is no demo download on Palmgear for 9.95 Soft's "version".

Asai has a commercial version of Bible Reader in which to read the NIV and chinese version of the Bible. The only extra feature in the commerical version is the ability to unlock and read these versions of the Bible (which would remain unreadable).
9.95 and BibleReader both LOOK similar (if not the same), since you can't download an evaluation copy, then it's pretty difficult to tell the two apart.

Go to their web site, it says at the bottom of the page in small text that it has been compiled from Poetry Poon's Bible Reader.
In fact, all five, six products have been taken (stolen?) from GPL projects.
Pretty cheap, IMO.

From PalmGear's 9.95 page: "9.95 BIBLE is based on Bible Reader by Poetry H.C. Poon and released under the GPL license."
It would appear from this that no one has "stolen" anything. I'm sure Mr./Ms. Poon and GPL are getting their piece of the action.
This is the exact same application as the free one on Asaisoft's website. Why pay when it's free from: www.asaisoft.com
I've got a ton of stuff free that work with the free reader:
KJV
ASV
Matthew Henry Commentary
JFB Commentary (OT,NT)
Scofield Commentary
and, to support the developer, I bought the NIV package (although the Chinese versions don't work without native language software) for $18. You can't get the NIV that cheap with any other program I've seen.

Is there a chance that we can get the NIV for the regular Bible Reader?

The NIV version is sold as a pakage with chinese versions on AsaiSoft website. The difference between the free Bible Reader and the commercial one is that the commercial version has the unlock capability to unlock the NIV and chinese versions. The free Bible Reader cannot unlock it.
I am not sure if 9.95 Bible Reader can unlock the NIV...
I doubt it since the unlock key is generated via the AsaiSoft website!

just to clear up any questions, the NIV version is commercial because the developer-- AsaiSoft-- has to pay royaltees to use it. it is a copyrighted piece of work, unlike the KJV and ASV which were translated before copyright systems.
along the same lines, does anyone know if there is any way to get the Catholic bible on Palm?

The same vendor just rebranded the freeware BigClock 2.83 for $9.95. These folks have no shame!

The two Chinese versions are of no use to most of us, but I bought it for the NIV which you cannot get stateside for much less than $39 in any format.

The problem is they aren't paying anyone for anything. They are just stealing other people's work and selling rebranded freeware. All profit, zero overhead.

Can't PalmGear do something about it?

Well, it's not illegal what they did, just immoral. GPL doesn't prevent people from charging for their work; it just requires that they publish the source code too. So he probably took the BigClock code, altered it slightly (maybe to only put the 9.95 logo on it), then started charging for it. This is the same thing Bozidar Benc did with Launcher III, but the difference there is he made substantial changes to the original Launcher code before releasing it as LIII, and originally LIII was freeware as well.

In the case of recompiling a piece of GPL software and charging $$ for it because they slapped on a logo would pretty much mean they are ripping it off. I suggest that you post comments on the reviews to point to the freeware version until there are "substantial changes" to make it a product in it's own right (such as LIII).
This ranks with poor marketing techniques...

well just to clarify- i think you'll find it's actually a copy of Palm Bible+ http://palmbibleplus.sourceforge.net which is a freeware advancement of Bible Reader.
9.95 soft are immoral and pathetic. if we can raise awareness to minimise the amount of people unwitingly purchasing from them then that is good!

Using the bible as a tool to steal money is terrible. Sadly, its probably something that is pretty mainstream in our society. I guess 9.95 is the Pat Robertson of Palm software vendors.
