Find a way to shade the screen. It's probably more of a hardware than software limitation. I'm not sure why you have a problem, I just looked at mine in direct sunlight coming through a window (no tinting) and I could see it fine. My brightness slider is little less than halfway.

In full sunlight, brightness turned all the way up makes the screen harder to read. What I do is turn my brightness all the way down & then turn my unit until the sunlight hits it at just the right angle. It's then readable although much less so than indoors with backlighting.

I've used several PDAs for GPS navigation in the car, including a NX60, a TT3, and a iPAQ 2215. That is one of the short comings of a transreflective screen--they are not designed to be used outside in bright sunlight. If you have the PDA stationary in a car mount, you will get a lot of mirror-like reflection from the shiny screen and this tends to wash out what is displayed on the screen. Too bad Sony quit the PalmOS just when they were getting close to having a OLED screen which will be visible even in direct sunlight. Hopefully they will sell these screens to other PDA manufacturers.

Erm... actually the whole POINT of a transflective screen is that it is supposed to work in direct sunlight!

The word is a contraction of Transmissive and Reflective - It's supposed to be transmissive so that the backlight can shine through and illuminate the pixels, but also reflective so that sunlight can reflect off it and illuminate the pixels!

The way I use it, I generally have the brightness on minimum - if the sunlight is bright enough to blank-out the backlight, then I usually find it's bright enough to illuminate the screen (At which point I turn off the backlight :))
You may find you'll have to angle it a bit to catch the light the right way to illuminate the screen 'tho.

My TH55 works a LOT better in direct sunlight than my old T665 I have to say, although the screen protector on my T665 was probably responsible for a lot of that.
The one currently on my TH55 reflects a lot less light so instead of turning into a mirror, the light can shine through and bounce off the screen to light up the pixels better.

Will it work in direct sunlight? Yes. Is it really that practical? Not really. You have to hold the PDA in a certain position while keeping your head in a certain position. If you move either one, or if clouds drift overhead, the screen will be difficult or impossible to read. If you use a car mount, bright sunlight will make viewing the screen nearly impossible in the daytime, and the difficulty is compounded as you drive around constantly changing the orientation of the PDA in reference to the sun.

I really wish they would use screens like those found on notebook computers and LCD monitors. Those have matte finishes and virtually eliminate glare.

AutoDimmer ( http://www.freewarepalm.com ) gives good control over backlight settings...
