View Full Version : TH55 Vibrator and other TH55 improvements
Has anybody figured out a way to make the TH55 vibrate when it alarms?
(a serious question)
I think this is one of the biggest problems I have with the TH55. If Sony got out because their profit margin was low, they should have cut their software group that does the PIM, and not the vibrating alarm capability.
Another related question,
Anybody aware of any applications out there that can be used instead of,
-Sony's picture taking software
-Sony's picture sorting/viewer
I 'personally' thing most of their internal software is crap.

I can't really ask much more of the ClieCamera app than it's already giving, but I recommend JPegShow! for viewing photos.
As far as a vibrating alarm is concerned, why don't you record something making a loud buzzing sound and convert it to an alarm?
It's very possible that it could make your TH vibrate at least a little bit if played back full volume.
If no vibro alarms is the biggest problem, I'd say they still struck a home run! :D
With everything that's in the TH55 it never occured to me to care about vibrating alarms. I never had a PDA with that feature.

I don't think anyone can figure out how to make a vibrating alarm on a device that doesn't have the hardware for it short of opening the case and installing a little motor. Hardware issue, not software.

Examples of were a vibrating alarm is essential,
- Meetings at work/customer sites.
-alarms are distracting and attract too much attention.
- Church/funeral/movies and other sensitive functions where silence is expected.
- In a car/bus/subway/airplane/loud social function/manufacturing floor/loud lab enviorment where you can't hear the alarm.
-TH55 makes it worse because it's alarm is even quieter than my T615.
It suprises me that it doesn't have a vibrating function. Every phone on the market has a vibrating function. Every PDA on the market has a vibrating function. The last time a PDA didn't have one was way back in the green/black screen days.
I was hoping that somebody has since build some vibrating slead of some sort for it, or figured out some vibrating retrofit device that you could install internally.
I think the TH55 is awsome. Exactly (well almost) what I've been hoping they would build. Basically a T615 with virtual grafitti. When I was at the store, I played around with it and started poking around some of the fuctions and using them like I would my current T615, to see if it'd be ok. That's when I noticed no vibrating alarm. I was hoping I could live w/o it until numberous times I found that during my daily personal/work routines, I found that the only why I knew my current CLIE's alarm was going off was by the vibrating alarm.
Still, I was hoping I might be able to get by w/o it.... no. it's essential if I'm going to use it as a schedular/organizer as it's first priority...
It looks like I'm forced to either,
1. Build some vibrating mechinisim that can be retrofitted myself. Might even be able to sell it and make some money on the side...
2. Try to justify getting a T3.
3. Try even harder to justify getting a PPC....

Try justifying a T3 purchase? if i'm not mistaken, they are the same price as the TH55's, and if you are mainly using PIMs, the battery life will not be an issue unless you don't come home for weeks on end. i only have NX/NZ series clies and they do not have vibrating hardware. the vibrate on the T3 is enough to get my attention in my inside coate pocket even when it's not right next to by body.

I stand corrected..
I thought the TH55 was the first CLIE w/o a vibrating alarm.

Hmm, some sort of a clip-on vibro-attachment perhaps?
It could connect at the bottom and be pretty small, since it really only needs to contain a motor.
That is, if the T series connector will oblige...

I didn't realize that Sony built many clies with the vibrating alarm feature.
I know my girlfriend's T615C has it (and she could care less), so was all T series?

The TG50 doesnt' have it either. If it's all that important to you, get the T3.
I probably wouldn't feel it through my case anyway.
Fortunately, I'm able to feel my T615 vibrate even though I have the Innopocket alum. case.
Also, because the alum case covers the speaker and reduces the alarm volume, I drilled a hole in the case, right where the speakers were.
That actually leads me to another gripe I have with the TH55, the alarm volume isn't as loud as my T615. The reduced volume doesn't make things much better.

That would make it awfully bulky...not only wouldn't it fit in a case, it wouldn't be convenient to put in a pocket either.

These guys used to make a add-on vibe called talevibe.
http://www.talestuff.com/
Today I was at the store looking at some of the other CLIEs.
yep, all (edit: so I don't get flamed too much, I only checked 2 different folding models, don't remember versions) of them didn't have vibrating alarms, and all of them had reletively quite alarms too. Simulating putting it in my pocket by putting my finger over the speakers some, you baaarrly even hear it. I put my finger over the T3s speaker, and you could still hear it very very well.
I don't know how you guys all do it, that have bought all those CLIEs after the T-series. Can you guys actually hear your alarms at all when they are in your pockets? Or do all of you carry them in pouches on your belt?
Also, those of you with cases? Can you even here the alarms at all?!?!? I could hear the alarm well in my T615 inside it's alum. Innopocket case, but I went and drilled a hole in it where the alarm speaker was so I could hear it even better.
I'm absolutely convinced now, I will never buy the TH55 and have lost all desire for it, regardless of other benifites that I reeeeally like about it over the T3... :(

I keep mine in a Sena case on my belt, I can hear it well enough.

I can hear my UX50's alarm anywhere, anytime. That is with it set on the quietest setting. When on the loudest, everyone in the room can hear it. I carry mine in my shirt pocket at work, when not working, it is in a Sony snap case, again no problems hearing the alarm. I really wouldn't want a vibrating alarm on a PDA, the vibrations would eventually cause probems with the unit, IMHO.
