i'm all for OS5, but here are my primary concerns...

1. No hacks means:
- No PopCalc/Note/Address
- No Plhegm, a recent-applications hack... is there something like this built into OS5?
- Silence... I'm a student, I need to be able to turn off and on the sound very quickly. Is there something like THIS in OS5?
2. Application support
- I've heard some of the older freeware apps and games aren't 100% supported under OS5?
3. Memory stick
- I've got my Bible, Dictionary, and Thesauras all on a 64mb stick... can I still set this up through OS5 or will I still need third party apps like Pi to accomplish it?

those of you using the NX/NZ series or the Tungsten, what do you think about OS5 compared to OS4.1 and are the benefits in speed and functionality truly as cool as they seem to be to us slow 33mhz users?

There are also additional OS5 concerns for the TG50 device. Knowing Sony it is probably using a different Hi-Res API then they've used in the past meaning programs will probably have to be updated. I won't be too worried as long as my major applications like SplashMoney, Bejeweled and Documents to Go work with it okay.

I have an NX, so I'll take a crack at this.

- Silence... I'm a student, I need to be able to turn off and on the sound very quickly. Is there something like THIS in OS5?I was worried about losing hacks too, but it hasn't been that big of a deal. DAs still work, and they can replace the functionality of many hacks, including the popup ones you've mentioned. McPhling has an OS5 version that is probably better than Phlegm. I'm not sure about the TG50, but the NX has an icon on the status bar that brings up a sound menu and has a Mute box that can be checked to stop all sounds. Maybe the TG50 found another one to include this using the keyboard.2. Application support
- I've heard some of the older freeware apps and games aren't 100% supported under OS5?I haven't had a single app from my OS4 days that doesn't work on my NX, but YMMV.3. Memory stick
- I've got my Bible, Dictionary, and Thesauras all on a 64mb stick... can I still set this up through OS5 or will I still need third party apps like Pi to accomplish it?Most people just launch apps from the MS using native VFS or PowerRun; these apps launch much, much, much faster than on OS4 devices. For example, I can launch Handstory at 272K from my /Palm/Launcher folder using LX in 1 second.those of you using the NX/NZ series or the Tungsten, what do you think about OS5 compared to OS4.1 and are the benefits in speed and functionality truly as cool as they seem to be to us slow 33mhz users?Well, speed is a major improvement, and the other improvement I didn't expect was how good high-density icons look. I'm not talking just about icons seen in launchers, but every icon, such as icon in Warning windows and in the Hotsync app and in apps like McPhling, etc, etc.

1.
Hacks like the one you talk about use no low-level system functions, so you can still use them through TealMaster. (I don't know about any silence hacks, but the rest works)
2. Most freeware applications work, since most of them use standard programming, only high-performance applications/games which access the screen memory directly cause problems, as well as VERY FEW applications that use 68k assembler. Just try on NX simulator and you'll know.
3. This works ABSOLUTELY THE SAME as with OS4, no changes at all. So if you used a program like Powerrun in the past, you can use it with OS5 as well, but for normal applications, you won't need to.

T1000X: I don't think so. I think they will go the NX way supporting SonyHR as well as PalmDD APIs. Sound is a different topic though.

Sorry rldunn, started writing before your post appeared.

PowerRun and OS4 VFS work the same, but PiDirect doesn't work at all, and PiTech have stated that they won't be updating this to work on OS5.

You're right. I was thinking about how it works without any utils installed.
Note to myself: stop writing gibberishdsfec

thanks, you answered all my concerns and questions. looks like i'm going to be in that long line for the TG50... unless, of course, Sony *does* release a VG T-series... i know, i know: wishful thinking.

how about another Clie question, though: are gMovie or PictureGear improved at all? i'm sure the CPU speed will increase my only complaint: my album has over 200 images from the stick, it takes a bit to load them all...

On the NX they don't exist anymore: GMovie (now Kinoma) has been replaced by a native MPEG1/MPEG4 MoviePlayer. It delivers MUCH better quality!

PictureGear has been replaced as well, but the new version is actually slower with huge collection of pictures (baaad cache managment). Better switch to a third party app like splashphoto.

In hindsight, these questions are easily answered. As well as the novelty of reviving the oldest TG-forum thread.

Keyquick!

CTRL+A, click Mute

Haven't found one yet

Palm launcher supports it natively

For me, OS 3.5.2 to OS 5 was an amazing step that had nothing but good in it. Now comes the bashing for thread-ressurection.
