Hi,
Starting from today, my precious Clie is making a buzzing sound. Its kind a very high kind of sound. Very strange, i did not notice it before. When i put my ear to it, it hear its comming from the connection point between the keyboard and the screen?
Any ideas what it is or how i can resolve it?
THX!

Earplugs. :)
This is what is generally called "the whine," which seems to affect a significant number of users. If you do a search for "whine" in the title of posts, you'll find more information than you could ever want, including lots of posts from dis-believers who think that screen-whine is normal, that your hearing is especially sensitive, or that it's somehow your fault. Ignore them.
The upshot is that the only solution is to cajole Sony to repair it for you, and even if you send it in for repair, they may or may not fix it. I got mine fixed and it seems better, though not perfect. Others have had mixed success, and at least one person has sent theirs in several times without success.

I called Sony to whine about the whine and...
I received an event number and was told I would receive a return box. That was over a week and a half ago and still no box. The Sony Rep was somewhat less than cooperative.
I am starting to think I am not getting a box.

If I put my ear right up to the screen 1" or less, I hear this "whine" how far away can you be and still hear it?
BTW I have excellent hearing, if I was almost deaf 1" wouldnt mean to much now would it?

Well, problem is, after you think it is whining I can even hear it downstairs, but thats just in my head :)
Anyway, it depends how i hold my clie. But if it is away like one armlength, then i dont hear it anymore.

If it's like mine (and many others, I think) it gets louder over time to a point, eventually becoming loud enough to hear from more than arm's length -- but only if held at the right angle. Try holding it at arm's length with the screen facing you and turning your head left or right. The sound from this problem is often directed with laser-like directionality.
Also if it's like mine, the noise will subside if you press on the screen but come back when you stop pressing.

Since I bought mine second hand from someone online, Sony will not honor any warranty even though the UX50 is less than a year old. Mine is just like JustaNoob's from the sound of it (ha ha) and the only real issue is that I can't use it to read in bed or in a quiet environment. There is usually enough white noise around that I don't notice it unless I hold it closer than a foot from my face. Then again, as I get older I have to move it closer and closer to see the screen. Oh well, I love just about everything else with the device and bought it for a good price so I will just have to live with the whine.
