Would any one know why Sony dose not update the NR software to make there built in apps like Memo Pad, Address book, Calc., and others HiRes+? We know that Memo Pad and Address book from the NX work so why not update them and the others to be a patch file like the MS patch?

Because they want you to buy a NX :(
I think that's the ethic at Sony. Release a handheld and forget about it. I have the feeling they are already in the late stages of the next handheld before the current model has a chance to collect any dust. I wish Sony would support our investments and release updates for things like Hires+ on the NR, but they would sooner put out a new $600 and just tell you to buy that if you want Hires+ Datebook.

It would probably take one programmer one day to update all the apps, particularly if they had someone around who coded the original project. Sony would be making a good investment of the day's salary in return for an increased loyalty in their customer base.
Of course they could do nothing and still sell LOTS MORE CLIES ANYWAY!!!!

Perhaps they figure most people replace those apps with 3rd party ones and don't want to spend the time on it. :)
I do kinda agree with OcellNuri in that they tend to focus on the latest and greatest version and leave the others to gather dust. But I think they is not exclusive to Sony, since it takes extra money to support old hardware that could be spent on new items. It is just a matter of where they draw the line between old and new hardware.

its all really in how sony practices business. like previously stated, they would rather get you for another $600 than waste their time updating software for a product that is already, in their eyes, obselete.

But why would I go spend another $600 when I know as soon as I get that baby home. I have been forgot about and I know there will be no updates, just another $700 unit next month.

Or you can just, uhm, put the pim apps for the NX on your NR, they do work.

I think a big consideration is all the people we don't see here. Not everyone using a Clie is technically savvy, and there can be problems doing a Flash update. I'd bet Sony would rather save that headache.
That said, if there were no OS5, I think we would've seen an update by now. I'm still hopeful we'll see one with hi-res+ programs and the G2 stuff.

It would be nice to start with Palm Desktop 4.1 update fot the NR.

Palm Desktop 4.1 works with the NR. All you need to do is save USBPort.dll to a safe place first, install Palm Desktop 4.1, and then replace the newly installed copy of USBPort.dll with your original one from the Clie CD installation of Palm Desktop 4.0.
I'm using Win XP, Home Edition, and when I reinstalled it over the top, it simply updated the files in the directory I had. As I noted in one forum, I first copied USBPort.dll to My Documents, and then did the reinstall.
I then located the copy of USBPort.dll that had been installed by the reinstall, and replaced it with the copy of USBPort.dll from My
Documents.
For me, it continues to work great for several months.
