View Full Version : Poor Movie Player Quality!
Is it just mine but there is a BIG difference between the quality of the Movie Player on the NX than the one on the NZ! It's hard to explain but it appears to be more blocky. I compared the two this past weekend and there is a difference. I thought they used the same program. Someone please tell me it's just mine so I can get another NZ. I love this feature but the way the playback looks, I will never use it!

When playing the same MPEG1 movie trailers on the NX70V and NZ90, from the same Mem Stick, I have noticed the NZ90 movie player will sometimes stutter, lag or get out of sync while the NX70V doesn't. I'm playing in full screen mode when I see this. Movies recorded by the NZ itself don't do this, but then they're smaller files.

No, I mean movies recorded on the NZ and then played back on the NZ. It's a big difference! I just want to know if it is just mine! I have a warranty, I will take it back! The movie recorder was my favorite feature about the NX and the NZ. When it plays back, it's blocky at the edges! I know it's not just me because I still have movies that I had recorded on the NX 70v and they are alot clearer than the NZ.
Also when I talked to Sony, they said that the NZ should record movies alot better than the NX70v. I thought they were the same version.

I noticed when playing back movies on the NZ that were recorded by the NZ that while resolution is the same, colors are more saturated, contrast is a little higher and it seems sharper, which means the jaggies and blocks are sharper, or more apparent too when you playback full screen.
pdagal, I notice the difference even when I playback at half screen. I don't know what could be the problem. I would take it back for a new one but every Best Buy in Michigan is sold out!

Kinoma is very cool. I'd use it more except most of the available movies in Kinoma format aren't recorded at as good a quality as MPEG1s readily available on the Net. Not the players fault, just places like Sony Pictures shoot for the lowest common denominator and don't do large, HQ files. You could use Kinoma producer to make better quality ones. But since the NX and NZ can play MPEGs, why bother? It's great for other Clies and Palm OS PDAs though that don't have Movie Player.

pdagal, I was trying to use kinoma on my NZ but it won't play movies not in their format. I wasn' t about to have two of the same movies on my NZ. If you get time, record a movie on your NZ and look real close at the edges of the recorded object. The object will appear Choppy at the edges. I just wanna know is this how my NZ is suppose to look. The NZ has better color quality but I hate the blocky effect!
Thanks

hey Maji,
yes I agree w/ you. A friend who has the NX took the same 1/2 minute video I took w/ my NZ. We both took the same video.
We found the NX's video to be smoother, however the NZ's video showed much richer color and seemed to handle extreme bright light and extreme dark better...it compensated for these extreme lighting conditions better than the NX. The NZ's video was "blockier" than the NX's though.
which takes better video...good question? Even after looking at both videos I still can't tell which is better, they each have their pros and cons!
yes, i would have hoped the NZ's video would have been a better improvement, in some ways it is, in others it isn't.

Thanks ERIC2002, I thought I was going crazy. I knew there was a difference! I will have to stick with this one. I don't understand why they made the NZ Movie Playback blockier but I guess that's what will hype up the new Sony CLie!
Hey eric2002, we are right! I went to Comp USA and me and the salesman there did a A & B test. Like I suspected the NX shot a smoother movie than the NZ. The colors were alot deeper on the NZ but the picture was still blocky!
I called Sony on this issue and they said I was right. They said that there is a third party software that's coming out next month that will make the movie player alot clearer on the NZ.
When that 3rd party software releases would you be so kind to post a message here. And thank you for the time and effort you spent getting the facts and presenting them and a solution to look for.
Great Job MAJI, hats off to you!

Remember, the 2MP cam is using a completely different lens -- differences should be expected.

I took one of my 'quick-movie-clips' that I generated on my NZ and uploaded it to my desktop..... and then ran quicktime against it. It seems clearer using quicktime. Perhaps it is the movie-playback software...... It will be good to see a new one come out for comparison.
I hope everyone has a great day!

I've noticed that video shot w/ the NZ does play slightly better in Quicktime... however it is still blockier than that of the NX. I did notice a "flower" icon on the recordeing software on the NZ, when I enable this button my video seems to be a bit smoother... have others experienced this??? What is that flower button for??
Yes, I can't wait for the 3rd party software...although I think it should be an update in the Sony NZ support page, rather than making us pay for it.

Agreed ! Sony should provide the patch free (buy from 3rd party) for its high end product.

I'm sorta new to these PDAs and am considering getting one but have a question:
Say I want to be able to play an mpeg file I have on my computer using the NZ90. What do I have to do? Can I just copy the file to the memory stick, or do I have to "convert" the mpeg to a file type that the NZ90 recognizes.
If so, how is the playback of these videos? It seems that most of these posts were geared toward the video recorded from the unit, not from the internet etc. I have a PEGN760C and the movie playing ability sucks. The Palm software has to convert it to a 160x120 video (or something like that), and even then the video only runs at about 10fps.
Can someone tell me what the max resolution video I can run on this unit is? Also, what is the highest framerate/resolution combination I can hope to obtain? (For example, can I run a 320x240 video at 30fps, or am I asking for too much?) Also, can videos be rotated into landscape mode so I can fill more of the screen, or how does it work.
Thanks in advance for your help and time.

You can play MPEG1 movies using the included Clie Movie Player app. Just drag them to your Mem Stick (the applications manual tells you where to put them, and how to name them).
You can play them in landscape mode, and 320 x 240 looks and plays great.
