I believe it was designed to be used on the beach or ski slopes on June 21st between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM only.

I had the backlight on my NR turned down as low as it could go all the time, but never off, you can't see it when it's off

yeah, useless without the backlight except in EXTREMELY well lit situations.
Nice backlight "feature", huh?

I do use it with the backlight off if there is good room lighting.

For the most flexible control of the backlight check out Energy Dimmer, originally by Daniel Seifert, recently taken over by 79bmedia gmbh http://www.79bmedia.com
It lets you have multiple profiles for different brightness levels and gives better control of the auto-off prefs setting.
It is a hack and requires X-Master or Teal Master, but they have a version for the NX in beta and will release it in the near future.

If I am outside, I sometimes can't tell if it is on or off.

I generally use mine without the backlight when using my Stowaway keyboard. I find that if the room is well lit, the angle on the keyboard is just right to read the screen.... and not look at my own reflection ;)

I use it as a flashlight, does that count?
