Hi everybody,
As I netioned on a previous thread, I'm pretty excited with my new UX50, it's such a great device!!
Nevertheless I'm a little concerned about the battery life of my device, It seems to have poor battery life.
I went to the forums, and found the BatteryTIME to do some tests with the battery, but the results left me even more concerned....
I was able to get 1:40 hr of battery time, running a test with the bluetooth off and the brightness almost at max, I think that is not so good....
What can the 1src's masters tell me about it??

I forgot to mention, I also did the charge test in the same scenario, and it took just 50 minutes to charge the full battery......

This is a thorny issue. The batery life of the UX50 without the EB40 attached is less than stellar. Your battery is new. Just like mine when I first got it, I got SHOCKING results from the battery. I almost considered returning it. It got better. Apparantly there is a battery 'break-in' time with the UX. After several charges & discharges the battery life of my UX improved DRAMATICALLY. Still nowhere near the amaxing battery life of my old NX80V...but not that bad. I routinely get around 1.5 - 2.0 hours of battery life surfing with WiFi enabled, depending on how I set my brightness setting. With the internal alone, I can go all day with heavy AvantGo reading and other fun stuff! :D
I highly suggest investing in the EB40 (external battery)...if you can find one! Apparantly they are getting very scarce out there.
P.S. I forgot to mention, I also did the charge test in the same scenario, and it took just 50 minutes to charge the full battery......
Why did it take 50 mins to charge when it was already full? :confused:

Thats very interesting, although I'm still dissapointed with the battery life, because is worst the the TG50 (my previous handheld).
The thing is that the battery last 1:40 hrs running the test, I haven't tested with wifi, I guess I won't be getting much time.....
Any other suggestion, beside the extended battery? wich I think I'll have to buy it sooner than the expected if the battery life doesn't improve.....
Another thing, Is the battery voltage meter really accurate???

First of all processor intensive programs do eat alot of battery juice. I notice a drain when looking at photos off my memory stick. I also notice that afterward if I dont use the UX50 for an hour the meter feeds back up, it could go from 70% to 90%. It has been discussed that the meter works off what you are currently doing so if I am using a program that is processor intensive, it will look like its draining quick, but then it goes back up. As mentioned earlier, the new battery also does seem to drain quickly until broken in. I was a hue complainer of it on these boards and then saw significant improvement after 3 weeks. If you see it drains quickly and often.....exchange the device the battery could be defective. See if tat is the case first though.

I'm from Old Bridge.....I shop at Best Buy Freehold often. Return the whole thing and get your money back. That store never stocked the UX50, just the floor model, I know this because I had went there numerous times to see if they ever got any, and the guy was always surprised that they only had the one, and only used it as a display. The only store that MAY carry it is CompUSA...good luck and be careful with that, and if they sold that to you as brand new talk to the store manager because they sold it to you as new knowing it wasn't. Good luck amigo.

Try a few charge/discharge cycles and test again.
According to Batterytime, the UX50 should get 4:30 with Bluetooth off. I assume that is with high backlight, but I am not sure.
Also, you can buy replacement UX50 batteries from Cliebattery.com for $39. IF you CLIE is new you obviously shouldn't have to, but it's good to know just in case you need one down the road.
I just got a UX50 too, but have not yet ran the test. I also had a TG50 before which had great battery life for a slim PDA.

I don't think walking down to the nearest Best Buy is an option for this guy Doug...as he lives in South America! lol ;) :D

Hi,
I just put my ux50 through batterytimes discharge test.
I discharged battery from 100% charge (4.2V) under following conditions:
bluetooth = off
ir recieve = off
backlight = full
Battery discharged to 10% within 64 minutes only. Looks like my battery has a problem.
I notice batterytime quotes the correct time for the ux50 has 4h30m. Has anybody achieved this? If so what settings? Has anybody tested their ux50 under the conditions above? If so with what results?
Thanks
Ok, just in case no 1 has said anything about this... The battery in the Clie has a break-in period during which the battery level seems really horrible, just wait a couple weeks or so and see what the battery life is like then... I was a bit worried when I first got mine as well but after the break in it was much much better... Also, make sure that you don't fully discharge the battery everytime, from what I've researched and what people on here have told me, it's not good for the battery at all... I used to do that and 1 time it completely shut down and the battery had to be taken out and plugged in again... If you still hate the battery life after the breakin period, the best suggestion is the EB40, I am about to purchase 1...

This ux50 is about 8 months old and has been through a good many charge discharge cycles.
A word about LiIon batteries. The charge/discharge curve will be steep at the ends, flat in the middle. ie imagine a graph of voltage vs time where voltage drops off quickly at first then stabilizes for a long while then plummets. The time when you are doing "bad things" ie you are forcing more lithium than can fit into holes in the anode and cathode materials. (cathode = some lithium transition metal oxide, anode = carbon typically) Anyway the important point here is any device manufacturer prevents the end user from accessing these deleterious voltages. Or at least they should. Discharge curve on my battery looked exponential which surprised me.
Ugh anyway I already have an extended battery due to a good sale on them but that doesnt mean i wish to settle for sub par battery life on my ux50's internal battery. So what I am hoping for here are some numbers from other ux50 users out there who have tried the settings i described a post ago on their devices.
Thanks again
Lol, sorry bout that... Didn't really read the whole thread...
Thanks for the info. on lithium batteries though.
I seem to have pretty normal battery life, I can play mp3's and use the normal pim stuff, and still use the wifi later in the day at home and just have to charge at night, although since I had the problem with my battery I've been trying to keep it on the charger as much as possible...
Hey, can you tell me where you got the deal on the extended battery? My wife wants to get me that as part of my birthday gift, lol... Cheapest I can find it for besides at the Sony shop is $120 or so at Brando.com...
