This is what would be nice: netchaser (http://www.bitsnbolts.com/netchaser.html) and here is the reason we don't have it for the clie Sony Japan (http://www.bitsnbolts.com/wifisupport.html)

If Sony America can't get Sony Japan to release the info, I don't think we have a chance.

That seems very useful. Can anyone with the know-how edit the drivers to make it work with the clie?

No to sound flip, but the answer to your question is "you're going to need to know how to reverse engineer, write low-level drivers, and a bunch of other stuff." Until someone who knows a lot and has a lot of free time figures this out, it can't be done. So far, no one has stepped up to do this.

I know ZLAuncher 4.x now shows signal strength .... I'm not entirely sure if that is for Phones... or wireless (WIFI).

All the ZLauncher Documentation shows is this:

If this box is checked, the wireless Signal Strength button will be available on the Bottom/Top Bar. Currently this feature is only available for PalmOne Tungsten|C and Treo600.

Soooooooooooo Not sure that answers ya question if it will work or not.... lol

Samsung kicks @ss. My GF is Korean and she has taught me a lot on how they operate. They are notoriously tough on their employees...but they are fair & compensate them well.

<hint hint> Invest in Samsung if you feel like making money!

We cannot support Sony devices until such time as they deem fit to support developers.

That will never happen. Now I really hate Sony. I hope I never buy another product from them again!

This (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=149) is a very informative article about why Sony is so damn proprietary

I have spoken to a number of people at Sony (both on the technical side and on the marketing side). The reason they give me has been consistent: the level of support needed when you release technical information (such as an API for working with the WiFi card) is more than "it's worth" (my words). While many developers have said "just release it, we won't ask for support," in the end this most likely wouldn't be true. You'd see all sorts of complaints like "the specs Sony released are hard to understand" or" they aren't complete" and so forth.

The WiFi card (WL100 and WL110) are not really Sony's. In turns out that their contract with the original vendor states that they aren't allowed to release the technical information. Of course, Sony COULD have insisted that the original vendor make their specs freely available, but... well... that doesn't seem like something that most people who do in a deal. Think about it: if you hired someone to make something for you to sell, would YOU insist that the specs be made public? Would you be willing to pay extra?

Keep in mind, too, that Sony uses non-standard (propriety) stuff because they are the FIRST TO MARKET with most things. They had WiFi before anyone else. Therefore, they didn't use the same hardware or software as PalmOne.

Now, don't think I'm being an apoligist for Sony. The reason I got to talk to insiders is because I've been so vocal on this issue and Sony was tired of my posting on this topic and felt they needed to provide me with the "real" story.

A somewhat annoying company policy but it just means one should probably avoid buying their stuff that needs ongoing support.

I don't mind when they won't release firmware upgrades for my TV or camera (not that it wouldn't be cool if they did :) ) It's only with things like the PDA.

My house will still look like an advert for Sony - their home theatre stuff is so good for what you pay.

The clie business has discouraged me from getting a viao though...
