This is a fairly subjective listing, but for me I can't live without:

- AvantGo & my 12 channels to keep me up to date.
- ZLauncher (the launcher wars are over for me)
- Filez (does everything I need for free)
- SplashID (never forget a password or other personal data again)
- DiddleBug (love my sticky notes with alarms for free)
- AppIcon (for when the default Icon just won't do)
- Clock+ (bought it before MegaClock came out; was the best at the time and it does everything I need so no need to drop more $ for a Casio bitmap - although MegaClock sure looks pretty!) :-)

I really liked the demo of SuperNames 2.x but it is just so expensive for a contacts manager at $20 USD. Not sure what I'm going to do about this one. The default address book is not sufficient for my needs. Hmmm.

Let me also add a few more personal favourites that are not really clie functional necessities:

- Bible Reader (by AsaiSoft - love the dual version display)
- AudioPlayer (came included with my T665 - crank it up!)
- Euchre card game (from Seahorse Software - I majored in this game in college!) :-)
- P-Jongg game (I like it better than the astraware version)
- Billiards by Megasoft (stunningly realistic)
- Tangrams game by Smallware (geometric brain teaser)

Thks.

This is a fairly subjective listingOnly somewhat subjective. When you start seeing the same apps over and over again, it gains much more weight. In any event, this is usually a good starting place for new Clie owners, so list away! Oh, and include URLs if you can. Let's make it easy for others to find the apps that we can't live without.

Which apps really take the most advantage of the true power of these machines? I want programs that are full color and high res, and can NOT be ran on my old PalmV...I haven't found too many programs that are really tailored to the Clie-class of handhelds...

My must-haves in alphabetical order:

"Apps"
AudioPlayer - A 128MB Memory Stick gives me more than enough MP3's to keep me happy.
*BugMe! - Great for quick notes and is currently the only easy-to-use HiRes+ drawing program.
*DateBK5 - Excellent Date Book replacement
Documents To Go - It comes with the Clie, and I prefere it over all the other office suites (I've tried 'em all!)
Hand Story - VFS-friendly all-in-one Web, DOC, Image, and memo viewer.
*Mapopolis - Fast, accurate, and full-featured.
Memo Safe - Hands-down, the easiest and secure Memo Pad replacement available. It is what Memo Pad should have been.
*MyBible - VFS-friendly, lightning fast searches, and multiple Bible versions make this excellent.
*WWCalc - Unofficial Weight Watcher's log and points calculator.

"Utilities"
Khroma - Easily customize your colors.
LauncherX - Great VFS-friendly Launcher replacement.
MS Backup - Backup/restore to/from Memory Stick. Saved my butt countless times!
McPhling - I associate it with the Capture button, so it's always accessible!
PhotoSkin - Great for managing VG and Status skins on the NX

"Games"
Bejeweled! - This is the reason I had to buy my wife her own Clie - She kept hogging mine!
*Billiards - Stunning graphics and great playability
*Klondike - Superb graphics and game play.
*Monopoly - Superb graphics and game play.

Programs with an '*' are run off of the Memory Stick using LauncherX's "Shortcut" feature.

Well, my "must have" list is pretty short. Oh, I've got a lot of other programs that I like, but could do without if I had to. The "must haves", in order of must-haveness, are;

iSilo - I just couldn't live without this. I can read web pages and ebooks, of course. But, I have several textual databases on my PC that I update almost daily. I use iSilo to convert and copy them to my Clie. For example, I am the secretary of my bowling league and have to update the records every week as the teams bowl. iSiloX grabs any new information on my PC and transfers it to my Clie. That way, at any time, I can use my Clie to call up every score ever bowled in the league. I also use iSiloX to convert the contents of several inventories that I keep on my PC.

WWCalc - This is an food tracking program (unsanctioned by Weight Watchers). Without it, I would not have stuck to the program that my wife has gooten me involved in.

YiShow - A great launcher that has allowed me to customize the look and feel of my Clie. When other people show me their PDA, I cringe at the bland look.

BugMe! - I'm always coming up with flashes of ideas that I know darn well that I will forget within five minutes. I have BugMe! programmed as my "ToDo" button so that I can quickly jot down things I need to remember.

X-Master and Hacks - No one hack is a must-have, but together, the 4-5 hacks that I have installed have transformed my Clie from a nice machine into an efficient personal assistant. X-Master allows all that to happen.

As an NX70V user, my choices are dictated to some extent by the strengths (and limitations!) of Palm OS5, and the pure joy of a HiRes+ display:

AcidSolitaire (HiRes+)
Agendus (HiRes+)
AIM instant messanger
LCD Analyzer (HiRes+)
Bejeweled
BounceOut!
Breakout (HiRes+)
Clie Mail
Dynomite
eWallet
HandyShopper
iSilo (HiRes+)
List
LoanCalc
McFile (HiRes+)
MemoRu
netClock
NetFront (HiRes+)
Noah Lite
Noah's Ark
Palm Reader (HiRes+)
Pocket Quicken
Soft Reset
Sync Back
Time Copy
TTFont4NX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
World Alarm Clock
Weight Watcher's Calculator (I wasn't always this trim...)

I was a long term AvantGo user, but when I got my NX70V, I had to make a change. I tried Plucker for a short time, but iSilo won me over completely. I don't think I'll ever go back to AvantGo.

I also had to say a sad goodbye to BigClock, a wonderful freeware application, because although it worked on my NX, the alarm would mess up my display, and I have leftover pixel paranoia from my old NR70V. I'm now using the World Alarm Clock which comes with the NX disc.

Ditto Eudora Internet Suite, another old friend and also freeware. It worked on the NX, but no HiRes+, and some minor display problems. I'm using Clie Mail and NetFront, both included on the NX disc. I've tried Blazer and Xiino, but I prefer NetFront (I seem to be in the minority here).

As you see, almost all of my games are from AstraWare.

I've tried DateBook5, but ran back to Agendus. DB5 seems like a good product, but it seems to be a matter of personal taste, and the learning curve just doesn't seem worth it to me. Agendus is polished, intuitive, and has great customer support. I am not particularly interested in the domain name and Bert's controversy that reared it's ugly head last year. It didn't bother me then and it doesn't bother me now.

The only drawback of my NX is that I miss my hacks: XMaster, PageDown Hack, and McPhling

BTW: Too bad about this site, but a fresh start can be a good thing too.

Mapopolis - great map, lets me know where I'm at when lost! :D
Docs To Go 5 Pro - Word, Excel, PowerPoint on the handheld
WorldMate - Traveler's best friend
Wassup - Today view of PIM stuff
BackupBuddy Windows (Includes VFS for PDA) - cures insomnia!
HandStory - ebook reader (for me) + other files reader

My favorites, in no particular order (out of 103 aps currently loaded):

Diddlebug- great for jotting a quick note or sketch (used to remind me when the parking meter expires).

OmniRemote/SecondScreenTV- for my couch potato moments.

AcidImage- like to use JPGs straight without converting for PGPocket.

Avantgo- don't like it but I use it everyday, so until I can fully replace it it stays on the list.

Filez- easiest to use when manging files.

Agendus- best ap I've used for managing contacts, calls and appointments together, with great history.

SmartList- I have many SmartLists that I use everyday, from gas mileage, to program data, to client dbs.

iSilo- this would be my #1 ap. I use it for books, maps, web clipping, manuals.

Wordsmith- to interface with Word.

XMaster- I love hacks and never have a problem with this ap.

Games- You've got to have some, I have over 30. I like SpaceTrader, Bejeweled, AcidFreeCell, Rally1000, Froggy best.

AvantGo
Handy Shopper (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=91091620021206073838&prodID=1350) - Greatest list maker EVAR. Use it for shopping, DVDs, bills, etc

Secret! (http://www.linkesoft.com/secret/) - Nice encrypted memo pad with a handy desktop component.

VehicleLog (http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=69850120030114111653&prodID=606) - Very old program, but does a good job of tracking mileage, service, and trips.

DATEBK5 (HR+) is the best choice for me in Datebook replacement.

AcidImage (HR+) is what I use for photos. Fast, faster, F-A-S-T-E-S-T!!!!!

PalmReader Pro (HR+) is my e-book reader of choice. I read on a daily basis, and would use anything else!

iSilo (HR+) is what I use for web clipping. It's somewhat difficult to set up, but does an outstanding job.

Shadow (HR+) is my 'to-do' & advance planning app... it just keeps getting better & better...it has color themes, amazing font support and a wonderful developer!

TTFont4NX by Lubak fixed my biggest issue with my NX...the lousy skinny fonts. Made it all better. MUST HAVE!!!

PhotoSkin for changing my NX status & graffiti skins. Personalized to the max!

Not must haves, but terrific games:

Dragonfire, Gravity Ball (don't try to put it on your card) P-Jongg and Text Twist.

All of these are available for download from Palmgear, but I encourage you to purchase from the developer's website if at all possible.

On my NR70V...... with 128 MS and Bluetooth MS

My "essentials":

JackFlash/JackSprat/JackSafe - if you need to loads of app's on your clie you need this app's, they are great!

BackupBuddy - Life saver

Launcher X (Hires+) - Iused to be a Yishow user, tried zlauncher but personally love the visual simplicity/elegance and ease of use
of this launcher.

Datebk5 (Hires+)- datebook replacement

Supernames (Hires+)- contact manager replacement

SnapperMail (hires)- great email client

Blazer - WAP and Web Browser in one, works great for what I need.

DiddleBug - Freeware scribble reminder pad...

McFile (Hires+)- Best Filemanager... i think

AcidImage (hires+)- great picture viewer

PDA Defense - 512 bit encryption software. If you have loads of sensitive infoon your palm, this is a key security app. It can be set up to erase all RAM if incorrect password is inserted a number of times; and you can decide to password protect specific app and encrypt specific databases.

ajvmp3 (hires+)- excellent replacement for mp3 player (still beta, but works great)

Converter - what ever you need to convert, this will do it

Worldmate (hires)- the key traveller's companion

KK-12c - if you used a HP12C calculator, this is the best
replacement for it

QuickOffice (hires+) - I carry loads of excel and word files with me, I find this better to DocToGo and it works with SnapperMail for attachment support.

Splash ID (hires+)- for all your sensitive data (credit cards, passaport numbers, etc) Syncs with app on desktop.

Wassup (hires+)- My Today screen on my Clie.

Isilo (hires+)- Really Strong Doc Reader (I recommend te CIA World Fact book with high res maps, a real beauty for travellers.)

Mobipocket Reader Pro (hires+)- another great reader, also supports enews and I also use it to view powerpoint presentations (for this its better than DoctoGo and QuickPoint). I purchaed for it the Oxford English Dictionary and Oxford Dictionary of History, which I store on the MS.

Acrobat Reader for Palm - if you need to view .pdf files on the go

Bonsai (hires+)- Great planning app, a kinf of little MSProject for palm

DayNotez (hires+)- a palm journal, great way to keep daily notes organized

Other Apps:

Kinoma (hires)- movie player, best out there for the moment

JpegWatchLite - for opening jpegs receiver with snappermail (they will be supporting AcidImage in the future)

HandZipperLite - Zip file manager

TimePlace (hires)- Nice world clock grafics

WAClock - Classic

SilkSking Change - speaks for itself (i sue Sonipa skins, very elegant)

ClockFix - Keeps you clie/palm clock exactly tuned to the second.

Speedy - Benchamarking tool

LCD Analyzer (hires+) - check for bad pixel and screen health

ToolOneSony (hires)- system info

AppIcon - icon management

Hackn (X-Master to run them):

FindButtonHack - To assign the find button to different apps

KeyRotateHack - absolutely key if you use the keyboard often, makes using it so much better

McPhling - Great Quick Launcher

PageDownHack - we all know what this is

PopHack - makes input with graffit much quicker (you can assign often used words to a pop up list which comes out when you tap twice on the screen while inputting text)

SelectDayHack - nicer and more complete select date menu which replace original one

TapPadHack - absolutely great for number input from graffiti area (it adds a numeric pad at the place of the normal number input graffiti area, plus a few other useful shortcuts on the graffiti area, like copy, paste, etc)

UnistallHack - Absolutely key to keep you palm clean if you install loads of trials on your clie and then erase them. Basically when you delete an app off the clie with the normal clie delete function, many times it won't delete the pref's associated with the app. UnistallHack monitors all the pref created by the different apps, and when you delet the app, it also deletses the prefs associated to it.

This i it!!!! Hope this helps.....

:)

I'm just going to give a top 10 list.

1) DateBk5 - great for scheduling and todos
2) PalmReader - haven't read a paper book in over a year
3) Clock+ - my alarm clock. Very reliable, and I never have to worry about power outages, volume too loud or too soft, or early alarms on weekends and late alarms on weekdays because I forgot to change the settings.
4) HandyShopper - grocery list app, but so much more
5) Ultrasoft Money - paying my bills weekly takes so much less time now, since I've entered all receipts as I get them during the week
6) AcidImage - great pic viewer
7) Yaps - freeware and encrypted password storer
8) EasyCalc - my graphing calculator for about 2 years now; freeware, with an amazing number of functions. Not pretty, but haven't found anything with more functionality.
9) DiddleBug - great for reminders and very stable
10) For NR users, NRButtons adds a lot of functionality to the status bar.

Among the essentials :-

Yishow 4.61 – for the background image and picture viewer
Palm Reader Pro – speak for itself
Isilo – html converter
Avantgo – for the daily news and stuff
MyWeek – for a simple non-bloated organizer. Tried the infamous DateBK5, but too messy for my liking. Agendus is slick but the font’s too small.

Handyshopper – modified a bit to keep track of my personal expenses
Document2Go – microsoft stuff
MediaMan – for cataloging my movie collection
TextPlus – speed up text input
Mcphling – Palm should integrate this to their OS!!

Most of my "must haves" have been mentioned already, but one that hasn't is BlueMoon, which is definitely one of my top five. BlueMoon helps you track events that should happen periodically, or one-time events that you want to remember when they occurred. I use it to track auto maintenance (when did I last change the air filter?), carpet cleaning, smoke alarm battery replacement, furnace filter replacement, haircuts, dentist visits, eye exams, contact lens replacements, etc. Anytime you find yourself asking, "When was the last time...", BlueMoon is the tool for you. You could use it to track the last time you called or visited Aunt Betty. You can attach notes to each entry, assign repeating intervals to events, and optionally export due items to To Do. BlueMoon has become one of my indispensible Palm apps.

rldunn
01-16-2003, 01:18 PM
Why not just put those events in something like DB5? You could even set up a view in DB5 to only view your 'blue moon' events.

11. PalmReader Pro (very nice and clean ebook reader)

Seeing lots of apps mentioned here, and some of them I am using too. I will just add some more here:

[Work]
Proj@Hand - for my project management
powerOne Graph - solving equations, plotting graph

[System]
Jot - a must have, or for people who don't like Graffiti, me as an example :Q
PowerRun - run apps from my 128MB MS

[Play]
Kinoma Player - watching videos
ChessGenius
Scrabble
MegaBowling
Bump Attack
Breakout

Still debating:
- ThoughtMgr vs. Bonsai (prefer the later currently)
- DataVizMail (can't find better one and simple is the key)

Everything has been mentioned for me, except for the ones below which I will talk about in detail =)

Open v0.95 - Keeps track of hours of businesses; definitly in my top 5. I can never remember what times stores open and close on sat, or sunday. Great when you want something and your not sure what's open, just go to the category, I like it better than the two other Business Hours programs because 1) they aren't freeware 2) they don't have a little icon next to the name showing if it's open or not and how much longer it is open, or how much longer until it opens.

Metro - if you live in suburbs and go to the city once in awhile you'll want this... Complete public transportation guide, and of course Freeware (you'll never believe something this comprehensive is free)

TV Grid Listings - If you have pocket tv browser, you'll need this little app, makes a great interface; I personally don't watch much TV but it is neat to use Pocket TV and categorize by Documentary and see what's playing during the next two weeks =)

KeyContacts - I heard someone mention the other contact manager and its price; this one is 24.95, but worth taking a look at. Makes SuperNames (thats the other one!!) interface look a little outdated if you ask me. If you organize your contacts through outlook.

BalanceLog - Great program to track what you eat and your exercise. Even if your not on a diet or trying to bulk up, you should at least try this because it really does show you a lot of eating habits and if your getting enough vitamins and minerals each day =) I only get enough when I eat two bowls of that Special K Berries cereal (no im not a salesman for kellogs, just a pattern I noticed)...

PalmSutra - I havn't showed this to one friend that hasn't cracked up... Some of imagery and names are pretty interesting; definitly worth it just for the laughs =)

Apps I'm looking for replacements....
-----------------------------------------------------------
My Cars - So old, need something new

My Friends - Love this software, but could be so much more =)

HappyDays - GREAT freeware program, enter in birthdays and it automatically reminds you and has some other neat features; unfortunately I can get it to work with the default address book, but not keycontacts, so it's hitting the road =(

4.0 Student - I just don't use it... currently in trial, I think I'm going to switch to the freeware competetior

For and in order:

1. DateBK5 - this rocks... I learn something new about it everyday.
2. Documents to Go 5 Premier - take notes at work.
3. BibleReader - I use it for devotions (& then journal in Doc to Go)
4. Worldmate - I travel & my fabs and warehouses are outside the U.S.
5. TealScript - really helps my T665 learn my handwriting (I am also testing the Beta 2.77 that use the high resolution better)
6. Billiards - great graphics and fun!
7. AcidSolitaire - great graphics and fun!
8. AudioPlayer - wish there was an upgrade or something, though.
9. MobiPocket - check out my sports and news all the time when waiting in line somewhere or waiting for a meeting to start... who needs a newspaper.
10. MealTip - does not need 66 MHz to run, but it sure is a great program when you go out to eat all the time.
11. TimeCard - great tool to track my hours worked for my annual review and comp time needed (LOL like that is going to happen in our current economy).
12. FastCPU - saves my battery life... important when travelling!

These are my thoughts. I know some take advantage of the high resolution and speed and some don't. Oh, well. Maybe someone will check out the one that I listed if they never heard of them and will be able to use them.

I noticed that you liked Jot... is that any good. I have TealScript and really like it, but Jot sounds like it is more of a real letter recognition sort of thing. I tried SimpliWrite when I first bought my PDA; however, because I didn't know what I was looking for, I never tried it much before I deleted. I cannot find a trial version of it, so I wanted to be sure that it was fantastic before considered it much more.

Thanks,

After reading all these great apps, there are still a few on my T615 that I hae not seen. Will include most used though to give a better picture:

1. DateBk 5 (and I finally created my first icon!)
2. Actioneer (an old app that I got for my Palm Professional (yes that long ago! early 1998-used) This is a quick way to add to-do's, appts, memos or any combination on one screen. I think the company has gone on to more complex
3. TakoShi--the most addictive game I have played. a variation of mah johng that I keep playing...and playing...
4. yahtC
5.Bejeweled
6.TravelPal (could be improved but useful to keep all travel info together)
7. Rally 1000

Trying out SuperNames as an address book replacement. But above are the most used...

You don't want to get rid of your default launcher. That is the first no-no in messing around with JackSprat (read Tanker Bob's primer on JackSprat/JackFlash (http://www.tankerbob.com/palm/)). Believe me, been there and done that. Without the default launcher, it will be a paint to restore your system back after a hard reset. Imagine that you don't have any icons to tap to after the hard reset. Pressing App (Home) button will only launch Prefs. For a mere saving of 100K FlashROM is not worth the trouble. I just add MegaLauncher3.2.2 with default skin. It only takes 383K of RAM, pretty small footprint for a great launcher.

Some of my personal favorites are:

Easy Address : the only address book replacement with the search method I really wanted (I type a few letters and it looks for them in all the names/company fields in any place...)

Agendus : my prefered datebook replacement

SplashWallet suite (SplashData for secured data storage, SplashPhoto for image viewing and others). All these sync perfectly with MAC OSX and have desktop OSX versions.

ClockPop5 : free popup clock that works with Palm OS5

Ultralingua dictionaries : english, french and english/french

WorldMate Pro : great for travelling and also for nice weather and currency info

Easycalc : my prefered calculator, I can enter and edit expressions (like 2x(3+5)) and it is FREE

I am amazed that in this whole thread, that has an abundance of great apps, Vindigo was not mentioned once that I could find.

http://www.vindigo.com

It is one of the select few apps I have paid for, and gladly.

It is my yellow pages on the go (how much money have I saved by *not* calling Verizon's 411 at $1.25 a pop?), restaurant finder with reviews, movie review finder with showtimes *with maps*! It will even find a nearby public bathroom!

They even have an OS X version!

I cannot heap enough praise on this service. I use it on an almost-daily basis, and it has saved my *** on more than one occasion.

Nate, thank you very much!!! This is an really cool and handy app! So great, it even has the public transportation guide of my home-town in the Netherlands, can you believe that! And free! (I'm Dutch so I am cheap). (I am going to visit Chicago Il in the USA, so now I will have all the info about the trains and stuff.......)

The only thing I could not fix was to run the app and the database from MS...the app works fine but it could not find the data, anyone knows how to run Metro and the data from Memory Stick? (works fine if I put them on my device)

smoothjordan,
you mentioned real player as a favorite app. I had been thinking about getting it but was wondering about content. If my CLIE can natively play mp3's, what's the point of this app? Is there somewhere to download real player-specific content? Thanks for any info you can give me.

CLE Amber
I don't have a CLIE anymore, but a Tungsten E. Your clie can play mp3's, so there really isn't any point in getting it. It comes packaged with the T E, and I use it a lot, but the sony one is just as good. I don't think there is real player specific content, so maybe you should just stick with the one on your clie. Hope that helps

Zlauncher!!! without this, I'd have a boring clie screen :P

AcidFreecell!-Simply love this, want to try and get as high as a winning streak as i can, currently on 7, working up to 8.

Bejeweled-This is awesome on the UX, can finally listen to the music that I was used to on the computer.

Shanghai- Just a timewaster :).

Palm Reader- love carrying volumes of books around without the heavy load

Documents to go+Codediver= One happy landscape user.

Agendus- Helps keep me from getting 'no show' letters for missing appointments :). *Makes a nice daily journal as well :)*

Pockettunes!- AWESOME to make more than one playlist and looks soo much better than the built in music player and able to play ogg files instead of Mp3 is a memory saver.

Acidimage- great to view digital art or images with this :).

Snappermail-No more replying to emails on the computer. Can reply anywhere :D.

Agression- Who wouldn't want to dominate the world?!!

I'm one very happy UX user with these apps installed :D.

Spikesdacoolest, why do you say the NX80 has very little flash? I just used JackFlash and went from 6000K to 12078k free Ram and there is still 9540K free Flash. That seems like quite a lot to me.

App performance is affected by processor, memory and mother board bus speed. Not sure of the specs on the NX80V's bus speed, but at some point (and my point is) overclocking will do no good and simply result in faster battery drain. I see no reason to mess with overclocking on a 200 MHz NX80. But then I don't play graphic intensive games, so what would I know?

Spike ... ClieSource already resolved this exact issue several months ago by adding a "Show Most Active Threads In This Forum" link at the top of every forum.

If you click on these links, all of the most useful threads get sorted to the top, including the "Must Have Apps" thread.

You can also click on the word "Views" at the top of each forum to sort the messages by "most views" to "least views". The ones with the "most views" are typically threads about favorite apps, or some other useful topic.

Spike ... you've made your point that you want it stickied enough times already.

Please let the owner of the website and the moderators decide from here.

I'm certain they are aware of your desires.

An occasional bump of a useful thread (maybe once a month) is a good thing.

But constantly bumping this thread every day is just becoming annoying to those of us who check it whenever new posts appear.

Why not just create a new thread in the General Forum expressing your desire of which thread(s) in other forums should be stickied? Then it can be appropriately discussed between you and Joel, Reggie, YellowRose, etc. and whoever else wants to participate. That way you wont be adding a lot of garbage posts right in the middle of the actual valuable threads.

Spike just for you info, the NX80 has a lot of Flash to use, that "JackFlashLight" is just a demo to show you it works. YOu have to actually pay to get the beset out of it.

Anyways, I have been using my NX70v for a long time now and have gone through many apps. Here is my current simple setup. I like it clean:)

Sony Apps:
AudioPlayer: A must, and a good MP3 player to boot.
MoviePlayer: With the ease of converting movies bought on DVD, my clie has become a great long car ride, or plane ride friend.
Clie File: I find it nice, while other alternatives are helpful as well.
MS Backup: God save us without this one.
KB Utility: A mans gotta have his KB100:)
Clie Remote, and Record: Rounding out the end.

Add-on Apps.
ZLauncher: I used LauncherX for a long time, then moved to Facer and now I am at ZLauncher. It is just that good:P. I didn't like it at first cause I felt it had a lot more than I needed, but I soon found it was a MUST-HAVE plus, it was easy enough to simplify the launcher.
Contacts 5: Everyone needs a contact program, I have loved this one for a long time and continue to update with it.
Fonts4OS5: Gotta love the look of your fonts:)
Agendus Pro: We must keep track of things, this is a great way:)
4.0 Student: A MUST-HAVE for my college years.
DocsToGo: Haven't found a better way to take notes in class yet.
JackFlash: On my NX70v I get another 4.5 or so megs, thats AWESOME!! coming from 11. GET THIS ONE!
LightSpeed: I love the ability to slow down things more than anything, I don't need more speed. But when I can save some battery life, I am all for it.
Athena CF: I beta tested this CF Card driver from the start and I have stuck with it. The updates have been good and everything has worked great. Any CF driver is surely needed in the Clies with the ability:)

And thats all I have for now, no games:P I may put solitare back on but I likes only what I needs for now.

I was going to get a Pocket PC until I found this app.
This is the entire reason that I got a Palm compatible device.
I have always had difficulty prioritizing and feeling comfortable with the amount of time I spend with my family vs. work vs. routine chores vs. doing other things that I enjoy.

This is the only todo list/outline/datebook compatible app I have ever seen that ties all of these concepts together.

I was so suprised not to see it on this list. Combined with DayNotez (Life Balance will automatically log checked-off tasks to Daynotez) I can really see how I am spending my time.

To me this software is the essence of elegance. It is really powerful and does a lot for you.

Recurring tasks, tasks tied to the date book, etc.

You would just have to try it and browse around Llamagraphics web site (http://www.llamagraphics.com/) to really get an idea of what it can do and how it works. They have a lot of resources that I found extremely helpful in the support section.

Be sure to read the founder's statement about why she decided to create life balance. It should strike a cord with any busy professional.

Also works great with the Jog Dial and I can't wait to try it with Datebk5!

I have a need to backup only selected files rather than the entire memory. Is that what BACKUP BUDDY can do versus MS Backup?
Does it work and is it reliable and easy to use?
I agree, MS backup has saved me a few times, but by not being selective, it may be backing up app problems causing subsequent crashes.

filber
01-08-2004, 10:58 PM
What I love most about Backup Buddy is that it performs a system backup automatically at any set time, in my case about 3AM. It is also much MUCH faster than MSBackup, and automatically removes orphaned files.

DanT
01-08-2004, 11:02 PM
That is what I use it for to do a daily automatic backup at midnight of files (mostly database part of the apps) that change daily so they are pretty small. The backup is encrypted so it is saved to leave the MS in the Clie all the time. Set it up once and then just forget about it.

I do MSBackup about once in every 2-4 weeks or every time before installing new app with a separate MS that is strickly for backup (the one that is not in the Clie most of the time) for security reason since the MSBackup is not encrypted. So if the Clie crashes at any time, I can always retore the RAM with both MSBackup and BackupBuddyVFS with only one day loss of data.

The restoration are exact mirror image of the RAM. Unlike the HotSync restoration, which tends to lose some of the preferences. I just hate to re-enter registration codes after restoring the RAM via HotSync. With MSBackup and BackupBuddy VFS, all of the registration codes are restored.

doctigger77
01-09-2004, 06:25 PM
Thanks for the info on the BB. Of interest to me was the fact registration/activation keys would also be saved and restored. The app definitely sounds like a must have.

Apps I find are useful:

PDA Defense - [ http://www.pdadefense.com ] Security app and a must have for anyone who's concerned about losing their PDA and having their data compromised. It has a "bomb" feature that wipes out all data after a certain number of incorrect password entry attempts or after a certain number of days without HotSync. If the US Defense dept relies on this, it's good enough for me.

HandyShopper - [ http://snapbag.com/~flux/hs/ ] Free shopping list and comparison software that has lots of features and very helpful

AeroPlayer - [http://www.aerodrome.us ] Great mp3 and ogg vorbis player with equalizer and volume boost and auto display off

Datebk5 - [ http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/ ] Datebook software that has so many features

BLOff - [ http://www.net-cell.com/bricenter/bloff.prc ] Freeware backlight app control software

FileZ - [ http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/filez.shtml ] Freeware file manager

FileProg [ http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/fileprog.shtml ] Another freeware file manager that I use. Depending on the situation, I may use FileZ or FileProg so I have them both installed.

AcidImage [ http://www.red-mercury.com/acidimage.html ] Great photo app which allows zooming and other features for pics

Avantgo [ http://www.avantgo.com ] Free offline web content provider for up to 2MB of data

Audible [ http://www.audible.com ] Great audio book software and player. I am hooked to the daily subscription of my WSJ

Fun Cam [ http://www.net-cell.com/funcam/ ] My closest solution to a monitoring device which allows my Zire 71 to take pics automatically at a predetermined time for a specific period.

NoviiRemote [ http://www.novii.tv/products/noviir/ ] Use my Palm as a multi-fuction remote to control TVs, VCRs, DVD, CD player and anything that can be controlled by infrared

PktQuicken [ http://www.landware.com/pocketquicken/ ] Quicken for your PDA

Slap [ http://www.handshigh.com/html/slap.html ] Jot down your addresses, phone numbers, appointment, to do's and memo on one screen and let Slap sort them into the relevant programs. Great app that gets rid of having to swap between programs.

PowerRun [ http://homepage2.nifty.com/hackerdudesan/powerrun/index-e.html ] Great app to allow you to run apps from your expansion card rather than running off your handheld's RAM. Great to free up valuable RAM.

Today [ http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/today.shtml ] Freeware Today screen which shows up your day's activities, to do's, appointments, as well as battery level and RAM in your handheld.

Docs to Go [ http://www.dataviz.com/products/documentstogo/ ] Edit and open MS Excel, Word in your PDA. Works great.

Uninstall Manager and CleanUp (NeatFreak pack) [ http://www.northglide.com/index.html ] Great apps to cleanup and uninstall leftover files.

One more I forgot:

Geeksounds [ http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/geeksounds.shtml ] Free sounds for your alarms that sound much better than the boring default stuff.

I hate forgetting to log in first before posting and ending up as "guest" and not being able to edit my posts. Oh well.

Plucker wasn't mentioned recently if at all. My #1 most used app on the Clie is Plucker/JPluck. I use them to grab BBC, New York Times, LA Times, Seattle P.I., some comic strips and other web pages in the morning automatically and put them on my PDA for when I've got time but no web access. (And even when I have web access, the plucked pages are faster and easier on the battery.)

I realize that no one really wants to hear from me, but here are my favorites in order of preference:

Fonts4OS5 & Butterfly-These two should be sold as a package. Together they make my Clie look really cool.
BibleR+- from OliveTree, hands down the best Bible software ever. The words of my Lord and Savior are always close at hand.
RocketMania- I play this game so much, I see it when I close my eyes, when I sleep. This is the most addictive game ever.
TextTwist- A close second to RocketMania.
QED- A simple Doc Reader/Editor which does exactly what I need it to do. No unnecessary features.
BigClock- Yes, I know it has no high-res support, but it is free and does exactly what I need it to do. I have been using this since I first got a Palm OS handheld.
ZLauncher- Nuff said.
CLIE RMC- You can have so much fun with this program. I have tricked many people into thinking that their TV's are broken.

Peace,
Big Al

Set Auto Power Off (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/setautopoweroffgold.shtml) is a very nifty app, that sets the quto power off to almost any setting. From 1 minute, to never. Only beef is, it doesn't retain the settings after reset.

so i dont see the need for ppl that cant afford to purchase both the above... :P

TechnoCat

Well, you don't need BOTH ZLauncher and PowerRun; ZLauncher has PowerRun features in it.

But more directly answering your question as to the value, the need is declining as more programs support putting their data on VFS, but it only takes one or two real pigs, like some typical games, to suck down the system RAM. That's when these programs really become handy.

If I am not mistaken, there is a setting in the TH-55 that allows the unit to stay on while in the cradle all the time. I have been leaving mine on with no problems.

The one I haven't seen anyone else mention is Plucker. I use it all the time to read html documentation for some new API or program that I am using. Use JPluck (http://jpluck.sourceforge.net) for conversion, not the one that comes from the creators of Plucker.

Decuma OnSpot is great for entering text.

Progect is another app that I like for organizing things.

The rest of my list is pretty standard:

Apps:
AudioPlayer (not the greatest, but I'm not willing to pay for PocketTunes)
DateBk5
Docs2Go
Mapopolis
Voice Recorder
Planetarium
Olive Tree Bible Reader
Time Copy
JackFlash (will be when I get around to buying it).

FreeJongg
MatchGame for the kids
Memo24 for the kids (I play it sometimes)

This probably should be a new thread, but...
I've seen many post they use Olive Tree Bible Reader. I tried installing it with the bible on the memory stick, and keep getting fatal exception errors. The Olive tree site says they have problems with Sony users, but they have no resolutions, or for that matter not much more that just Sony users tend to have problems. Any of you that use it have solutions?

Here's something I'll bet you didn't know-

Avantgo, aside from being good for dowloading web content during HotSyncs, also makes a dandy web browser. Not as many features as NetFront, but it is better for checking my mail. The best part is that it doesn't disconnect the Wifi when I close the program, which is perhaps the most annoying thing about NetFront.

Derwoody
04-21-2004, 02:14 PM
Not that I'm touting NetFront all that much, but on NetFront Settings, page 2 of 4, "Connections", select "On Termination", "Never Disconnect", if that's what you want.

hi,
I have once recommended my own DAs here:
http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=41189

I uploaded a NEW version (1.3) to PalmGear today, that no longer needs AutoOffSleepDA ! :)

What it now does: You can just launch one of the supplied DAs to prolong your auto-off timer, and it will automatically restore itself when the device is turned off - i.e. the "auto off prolongation" will only occur for the current session, which is the safe method to, for example, show a picture for a long time, and NOT forget your battery later, when the device powers on in your pocket because of an alarm...;)

Since I use it myself, it's my "must have app" - I really hope you will like it too, thank you.

Ok after reading this whole thread and looking at a lot of the apps listed. I thought I would contribute my list of prefered and list of ones I'm impressed with and now using thanks to the many people on the forum that have let us know their favorites and also answered my many questions I have asked.

Programs I use because of this forum and also consider must haves.

Zlauncher
The name is only a small portion of this one. I like the fact that I can make the icons smaller and still have icons to view without having to do the list view in the builtin launcher. This combined with the ability to make more columns of icons and smaller font size for them allows me to view more apps on each tab :) Then there is the bars I can have at the top and bottom and the tab thing for categories instead of the drop down list in the upper right that I like most about this app.

Fonts4OS5 (There is now a free OS5 hack that does same thing FontHackV I'm glad i was still evaluating this one and didn't buy it yet.)
Changes font and font size in applications that you might want to do that. I use it for smaller font sizes in Memo, Calander, and some of the other apps that the font size isn't small enough IMO.

TextPlus
Helpful if you can't write fast enough with graffiti I find it useful a bit for spelling to as I'm a horible speller and the list that comes up sometimes has the word before i get to the part where I misspell it. :)

Converter
If your like me and find you need to convert something to another thing then this is for you. Its free and can do the following sumarized things (too many to list all). Acceleration (and other related), Angles, Clothing, Computer, Density, Energy, Length (and other related), Numbers, Power, Shoes, Temperature, Time, Weight etc. I used to go to www.onlineconversion.com when I was at home. But now that I have this app I can do the conversions when I'm away and at home.

Pilot-DB (or DB for short).
If you need a database program on your palm this might me the one for you. It is opensource (free) and my guess is just as good as any of the pay ones. You will want to check their site for detailed description and features. One thing I know is it does everything I need it to do. http://pilot-db.sourceforge.net

Colorize and Kroma
Change the colors or choose from themes of colors. Better than just picking a theme in the builtin Color Theme option in Prefs.

MediaMan
Keep track for you collection of videos, DVD, and music (although not specifically designed for music) You can even keep a list of friends etc in it so you can pick from a list for each title so you can keep track of who you loan them to.

Programs I consider definate must haves.

Uninstall Manager and Cleanup
both of these apps are by www.northglide.com They have a neatfreaks pack that you can get both in for a great price. They allow you to monitor anything installed on you palm and later completely remove them if you no longer wish to use the apps you install. Plus Cleanup allows you to remove junk items left behind by stuff you might have installed in the past like demos and shareware or other left behind stuff. It has a nice signature file that contains info to be displayed in Cleanup to help you indentify what each item is. The 2 programs work great together. Cleanup can tell you if the item was monitored with Uninstall Manager too. And lastly Uninstall monitor has a feature that allows you to launch a program you just installed in a "SandBox" allowing you to evaluate it real quick if you like and when you close it you can choose to remove or keep it installed.

PDA Money (came with my Tungsten E)
Just as good as quicken and MS money in my opinion. Keep track of your finances etc.

Programs I was already using that I like.

Lightspeed
For those apps that you need a little more boost of speed and you can even slow down the cpu to maximize battery life. It allows you to choose the speed for each app so you get the faster speed where you need it and the slower speeds where you don't need it. I speed up for MMplayer and other things like solitaire and some of the non game programs I run at slower speeds
PocketMark VFSMark
If you want to know how well your palm performs compared to others these benchmark apps I found used frequenty by many. VFSMark is for benchmarking cards to see how well they perform.

FileCaddy, FieZ, FileProg (FileProg I got because of this thread)
Each of these file managers are excellent and also free. Each of them offers a general set of the same features while ech one also offering its own layout and design. In order by size 31 KB, 174 KB, and 238 KB respectively. So if you don't already have one or want to suplement one you already have these are for you.

Hours
If you need to keep track of the time you spend on projects or at work or really anything you want to keep track of the time spent then this one is for you. it is also opensource (free) and can be found at http://hours.sourceforge.net

MMplayer
The only audio video player I use. I have an mp3 player so I just use it for video.

I won't list the games but if your into games on your palm and want to know the ones I have send me a private message.

Well I hope this isn't too long of a post. If you have any questions or want more info than I have provided feel free to send me a private message.

On my NX, some of the things I use are as follows. The * means that there is a link to the project from www.prussfamily.us/palmos_software.html . All are free unless marked "(S)".

APPLICATIONS
*Plucker - offline HTML viewer
PalmBible+ - Bible Software (palmbibleplus.sf.net)
*RoadLingua - dictionary software - works very well with Plucker and PalmBible+
pEdit - extended memo editor (S)
*Universalis - Liturgy of the Hours
CryptoPad - secure editor (no Hi-Res+ support, but good enough for my modest purposes)
eReader Pro - I'm reading a free ebook in it now. Normally I use Plucker for all ebooks, but I bought eReader Pro with a font pack to check how to support its fonts in Font Collector. I found out that my Fonthack support already supported eReader fonts.
iSilo (S) - I only use it to view one file, "How to tie a tie", which it just so happens I have in iSilo format.

UTILITIES
Fonts4OS5 (www.lubak.net) - font selection
*Capitalizer - midline capitalization, easy punctuation, sticky keys, alt+key button selection, etc.
Graffiti Anywhere
*ClieSkinner (S) - change VG/SB skins
Lightspeed (www.clievideo.com) (S) - I underclock most programs to save on battery life, overclock some, and use a custom version of Plucker that turns on Lightspeed overclocking for searches, dir scans and autoscrolling
*Font Collector (S)
Khroma/KhromaQC - change color schemes (I have a different scheme for day-use and a different one for night use)
McPhling (shareware but GPL)
Filez
G700 Hack (S) - Igor's G700 keyboard driver--much, much better than the OEM one
YAHM

Oh, and I use some built-ins, like to do, schedule, address book, Clie Camera, Clie Viewer, Audioplayer, MS Backup, MS Import, Hotsync and Clie Memo.

Apps and why I've chosen them.....though some I've chosen not to really touch on.....I have all these and more on my unit.....If anyone wants a complete list of only the best let me know.....I've spent many hours testing many apps and all the apps on my Clie rock the most......

-Zlauncher (best launcher out. I've tried them all)
-DiddleBug (Best free notpad app out. Allows alarms, exporting of Bmp images, and much more. If I had an OS5 (320x480) clie or palm I'd go with BugMe. I converted back to my NR70v from the TH55)
-HandyShopper (Best shopping program out. I use it for lots of other things also. Better than Splash Shopper (even though I purchased it). Deleted Splash Shopper after checking out handyshopper. The only negative is handyshopper doesn't have a desktop application. You can find a converter that only works for excell 2000 and under or something like that. Still prefer it over Splash Shopper
-Shadow (too complicated to explain. lots of features. more than Bonsai. Better than bonsai unless your only going for looks.)
-MegaCalc
-Holidays (freeware app that imports holidays into datebook. you can edit the dates and stuff too)
-Pane (best free birthday, anniversary, etc. app I've found...works with custom fields.)
-SplashMoney
-SplashID
-QuickBudget
-A-Lex (best wordnet dictionary for palm and smallest.)
-BDicty (great dictionary. Works in conjunction with PalmBible+
-Bible+ (Most Feature Rich Bible Program out....)
-Datacute Concordance (The new beta version rocks. Check out the forums to download the latest version www.dataviz.co.nz)
-Documents To Go
-Isilo (faster than plucker.)
-MSDict
-MyBible (fast, nice highlight feature)
-Plucker (web site converter. freeeee. nice features.)
-Quizzler (best quize app out)
-SmartList (best database app out. I've tried them all)
TomeRaider (large database of free books, dictionaries, etc. Websters Encyclopedia and Rogets Thesaurus is what I us it for....Don't care much for the new version.)
-WordSmith (Best memo and doc. app out.)
-GrxView (for large images this is the best. Tried them all. A little slower when viewing, but for detail, this gets the most kudos.)
VFSi (best free image viewer. views .bmp .jpg and creates .txt files)
Patience (by kickoo. best card game out. I've tried most of them)
TakTik (By kickoo. rocks)
******If anyone wants to see my list of best freeware games let me know...I've spent many hours researching only the best for hires units******
-3xCom (small with nice featurs)
-Filez (nice features with the ability to change all attributes. no file manager that I've tried has this feature. i've tried many...)
-HandZipper (great for zipping and unzipping files on card. i've not chosen RescoViwer because it crashes my unit often.)
-Colorize (nice color app for palm. smaller than khroma)
-Hi-Launcher
-X-Master
-Uninstall Hack
-Crash
-v3bHack (turns os4 graphics to os5)

9. Idiots Deluxe (very good program, keeps track of all the idiots in my life)

Could you upload this freeware program somewhere? The only (working) mirror requires you to sign up for a mobile phone contract. (T-mobile, Germany).

Please send me an email when you do, w.j.stuursma[at}student.rug.nl

My must have apps:

ZLauncher 5 - a great launcher, helped me restore files from the memory card; and I love customizing the look of my Clie

Datebk5 - Datebook replacement with icons; I use Icon Manager to add more icons

Icon Manager - excellent freeware

Documents To Go 5 - for those essential excel files; came bundled with my Clie

DayNotez Desktop - Desktop component retained all my entries when my Clie crashed; easily restored by having desktop override handheld temporarily.

What is iSilo faster at, in your experience? In mine, it has faster autoscroll, perhaps faster paging in text with long paragraphs. On the other hand, I think Plucker may be faster at putting a new page on the screen and at searching.

Here are 2 more applications that I just installed on my TH55 that I think is a must have!

Clié Date on Status 2.0
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodID=78227

Soft Reset 1.1
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodID=50830

Both are Freeware and a definite MUST HAVE!

Clie Date On Status: If you keep your stylus pressed on the clock, it will display the current day and date.

Soft Reset: You can assign any application to immediately launch after a soft reset was performed. I had it launch my launcher AppShelf, thus I don't have to see the annoying Date Menu after a soft reset.

most of the must haves have been posted (esp. system related, launchers, explorers etc.)

but as i travel very much through my job:

- SLovoEd (english, german, dutch)
- Wikipedia
- German Train Schedule
- Avantgo (to soent some free time on trains)
- Mobipocket Reader (for enews and wiki)
- Pocket Tunes (to listen to music)
- Stadtplan/Brockhaus/Duden (different german progs. amazing lexicas, and city maps)
- Resco Photo Viewer

and as a very big movie freak:
- LM Movie Guide
- VideoHound

still searching for a dvdlist program which imports the dvdprofiler data exactly (and without having to edit options for hald an hour, videolist doesn't do it if there's not the right order of categories etc. total mess). I don't wanna do that with VideoHound or MovieGuide cause owning more than 1700 DVDs would mean spending a lot of time making a dvd list in these programs.

This question has been raised many, many times.

Look Here (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58) or Here (freeware) (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9634&) or Here (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45588&highlight=favorite) or Here (Hacks/DAs) (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4783&highlight=favorite) or Here (ebook/doc reader) or Here (Apps you can't live without) (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9241&highlight=favorite), or Here (Outlining/List programs) (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3320&highlight=favorite).

These are just the threads with high post counts. If you do a search for the word 'favorite' (in the title only), you'll come up with three PAGES of favorites.

Good luck.

Don't be a spoil sport YellowRose!!! :D The apps change over time, and people move on to bigger and better [and more stable/ less memory hogging/ neater] solutions, so I think a fresh reworking is healthy.

Maybe we should have this in our profiles, so that users can keep that list up-to-date rather that having to search through long threads, containing tangental posts such as ours! :p:D:D:D:p
