Can't say I need any of them. I'm usually one that prefers free/opensource software though. Occationally I buy games if the price is right for what I'm getting.

i tried MegaLauncher it worked great but my only concern is that if you have applications that has same icons but with different names, all of those apps will display the same name of the 1st app that was installed.
try these guys;
palm revolt
palmasutra
colonization (freeware) (palmos.front.ru)
vavilon
gomoku (pretty challanging)
panzer
tangram
tradewinds (i achieved the 2 billion mark!!! then it force me to start over again)
ARVALE
Legacy
warring nations
Shark Attack
Daedalus 3D (like my fav half-life or counter-strike)
microquad (awesome! especially when playing multiplayer with my officemates)
LJP (do you have neo geo roms?)
Novii Remote
PTunes
LightSpeed (
TCPMP
RescoViewer
Card Export II
USB-charger (charge ur device thru ur USB cable)
FullPower
TbmpEdit
(i did a total makeover of my ZLauncher with this one, i was able to edit icons, and etc. from its sources... it can even use the RIconChanger icon packs as templates.) :D (beware! you may experience a few crashes)
ReceiveIt (receive any kind of files on your handheld, .zip, .3gp, .xls, etc)
Chime (like a cokoo clock on your palm)
UniCheater (cheat games... ;)
Try them first before you buy.

I hope this helps others find the following apps (especially after Google scans it):
I have been looking for a couple of apps listed here awhile back, but the links to www.joat.ca go to a squatter's page. Looks like he let his domain registration lapse.
I was looking for Open (tracks the hours that businesses open and close) and Single Button Launcher (simple non-hack app to let a single button launch multiple apps).
After a lot of web searching, I found Fraser McCrossan's new website:
http://qqqq.ca/cgi-bin/wiki.cgi/HomePage

Two of my favourite freeware apps have been mentioned already:
1) McfLing: creates a small pop-up list of your frequently used or favourite apps. Excellent little app.
2) Watchmaker: multiple alarms, multiple sounds, highly customizable and free. Excellent replacement for Palm's World Clock (at least as far as alarms go. It won't tell you the time in Cairo.)
The one I haven't seen mentioned is the excellet and also free Profiles, available at Palmgear.com. This lets you set a numner of variables (screen brightness, sound, phone on/off for Treos) and then save the profile under a certain name. So because I read at night I have a Night profile that mutes the system, turns off the phone and dials the screen brightness way down.
Good so far, and worth getting, but my favourite feature is the Triggers. You can set certain profiles to take over at certain times. My Night profile switches to Regular at 4:00 a.m., so that when my Watchmaker alarm goes off at 6:30 the Treo is unmuted and it wakes me.
Excellent!

4) ClieMounter - Handy utility for Clies
5) BackupBuddyVFS - To protect your info by backing up to PDA's memory card
6) Lightspeed to underclock and overclock various apps to save battery or get better performance (TCPMP)

Big Clock (outdated, but I can't live without it,free)
And my palm just crashed, so I have to hard reset now. Crap.

wow, bizarre lists above. I will check some of them out. I have a Tx...
Below, (f,s,$) means free, shareware or commercial SW.
(f) Cryptopad encrypts some of your memos, has windows viewer.
(f)smbMate gives you real file browsing, over wifi, to your PC. (probably = WiFilePro?)
(f)YAUC. quick, convert nt-meters to inch-ounces
(s)Russell Webb's scientific RPN. Say no more..
($)Softick Card Export You need this to mount your SD like a USB drive, so you can do PC-Palm file sync. Someone will say pda2pc is the same, and yes that's a great program but it's NOT the same, when you want to run a backup program to access the SD memory and sync it.
($)Weekview makes a compressed week-long calendar summary. Less important with new bigger screens: you can use the palm's week view, sort of.
(f)3xcom file manager (also, palm commander) Similar to filez, which crashes my TX (wtf?)
(f)LYME is full-on Matlab for the palm. Holy Mackrel!
(f)graffitti 1, baby.
($)pilotraining: best training log ever. Out of business. Bummer
(s)planetarium: excellent astronomical calculator.
(f)db2go: doesn't work on my Tx. I sure miss it. Gotta find a new database, I guess. Recommendations?
I'll try to add links later, but I'm lazy, and you have google...
Having upgraded from a Vx, Some of the stuff that comes with the palm now has really impressed me. Not so important to this list, but if you're thinking of upgrading, you might not realize what you get:
docs2go. Amazing capability, though I don't use docs much on the palm.
Drive Mode Same as softick Card Export, comes free on Lifedrive.
Versamail + wifi. This is the reason to upgrade: finally get all that outlook stuff really synced, in the airport. Well done.
LifeDrive Mobile Manager now *that's* a sync program. You can use the Palm as your primary data storage: sync work and home computers, over the wireless for instance. I totally loved this, and it is the main thing I'll miss now that I'm e-baying my lifedrive.

Gotta add two "for the perfection of the Palm Graphical User Interface (GUI):
SkinUI (free) or PalmRevolt - replaces Khroma or Colorize and doesn't get reset when using Netfront.
FontSmoother - for absolute beauty in rendering fonts, per application customizable!

(f)db2go: doesn't work on my Tx. I sure miss it. Gotta find a new database, I guess. Recommendations?
If the company for pilottraining is out of business who's profiting off of the software shouldn't the software now be public domain?
A good database program I found is from www.mobi-systems.com. To me it seems the closest to MS access functionality on the palm from the ones i have tried.

I think my must have apps have already been said. Even so, here we are.
Zlauncher - I love being able to run apps from the card
TCPMP - I have several movies on my 1gig card, which I watch on my Zire31, which according to Palm inc. isn't even supposed to play video. conversion courtesy of Fairuse Wizard 2 tcpmp.corecodec.org
LJP - I have to have my LJP, especially since I don't play my gameboy anymore.
PalmPDF - PalmPDF is a MUST-HAVE. Native PDF support on my palm at this speed and reliability is just awesome. IT'S FREE!!!!! metaviewsoft.de
Plucker - I have Plucker and Avantgo, Plucker being the must-have because it is so easy to use using Sunrise desktop, and it takes half the time to sync as avantgo because it updates at your prefered schedule
Earthcomber - This is a completely FREE navigation software. Has maps of the entire US with poi's (All cities don't have all poi's though of course) earthcomber.com
Streetfinder - Streetfinder is another mapping software, but is commercial by RAND McNALLY. I have to say, it definitely has more poi's than Earthcomber, and can make routes on the palm, but for 30 dollar software and by a big company like Rand McNally, this software could use LOTS and LOTS of BIG improvements, like more poi's for instance. No pointing fingers but On my Pocket PC device, I have Microsoft Streets and Trips, which has almost every single poi. But Streets and Trips can't make routes on the device, which is a big thing. Overall Streetfinder is a MUST-HAVE. (It does give lots of info about poi's, such as phone numbers, fax numbers, summaries of hotels [accepts dogs, 70-90 dollars a room, etc.], email addresses, addresses, and other useful info. Handmark.com
Quickverse PDA - this one is a Must-have Bible software-commercial Quickverse.com the free alternative to this program is palmbible plus. Palmbibleplus.sf.net
A5 - A5 is a calendar app like datebook with many many more features and enhancements. It also handles your todo. A5agenda.com
Crimson Fields - Crimson fields is the palm port of Crimson Fields. Awesome game. Thanks Henk. Metaviewsoft.de
PalmCommander - Backup utilities and Zip compatibility is what I use. palmcommander.com
NapalmRacing - excellent racing game for palm, free, Great Graphics, level editor. napalm-games.com
MobileDB - Database program with downloadable databases. Handmark.com
Pocketcity - SimCity clone. Open-source. Pocketcity.sf.net. This developer needs some encouragement I think.
OpenChess - Best Chess Game Ever for Palm. MANY MANY Features. palmopenchess.sf.net
UDMH - for PalmPDF, LJP, Crimson Palmpowerups.com
That is a lot but those are my MUST HAVES
Zlauncher - I love being able to run apps from the card
Amen! QLA feature is awesome for launching apps from status bar swipe.
Streetfinder - Streetfinder is another mapping software, but is commercial by RAND McNALLY. A5 - A5 is a calendar app like datebook with many many more features and enhancements. It also handles your todo. A5agenda.com
Agree! Using hires icons makes A5 looks pretty. ;)

So far, I must say the must have programs for me are:
- Checkbook - Would be in doodoo without it.
- Splash ID - Would be in doodoo too ... because I'd forget all my usernames/passwords.
- Due Yesterday - Keeps me up to date with my classes.
- PalmPDF - So I can read my assignments in class.
- MySportTraining - So I can keep up with my workouts after class.

shieldvideo, Timesheet is nice! It saved my bacon last month when I had to work flex hours because my wife injured her knee and I had to get me child to/from preschool. Timesheet is under-rated freeware. Everyone should check it out. I use it to track the time I work as I'm salaried and don't punch a clock. Nice memopad export, and multiple ways of viewing your time worked on different jobs. Plus it works well with one hand on my TH55 (except it doesn't exit with the back button). A simple press of the jog-dial times me in/out of work.

KsDatebook (http://www.freewarepalm.com/database/ksdatebook.shtml), a freeware replacement for the built-in Datebook app by "Kim", roughly equivalent to Pimlico Software's Datebk3.
KsTodo (http://www.freewarepalm.com/database/kstodo.shtml), a freeware Todo replacement from the same author.
LionDoc (http://www.lionscribe.com/liondoc.htm), a free, open source Palm "doc" reader based on Bill Claggett's classic CSpotRun app. LionDoc adds support for categories, documents on an expansion card, and "zText" documents.
MoePaint (http://www.pdaload.ru/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=1091&ttitle=MoePaint&pid=palm&newlang=english), a free, color, hi-res paint program for PalmOS devices by Toshiyuki Hayashi. (Download link is a Russian site, as the author's site doesn't seem to exist now. :( )
Pilot-DB (http://pilot-db.sourcefore.net), a free, open source database manager for PalmOS. Pilot-DB includes plugins that let it handle JFile3 and Mobile-DB databases, as well as databases on an expansion card. It also has a scripting facility, and fields in one database can refer to records in another, providing proper relational capabilities.
PalmFiction (http://palmfiction.sourceforge.net), a free, open source doc reader from a Russian programmer. PalmFiction is the most powerful program of its type I've seen. It handles Palm "doc" files, zText files, plain ASCII files, and RTF files (which it displays as plain text). It can navigate the directory structure on expansion cards, giving you flexibility on where you keep things. The home page for the program is in Russian, but the reader itself is available in English, French, German, and Spanish.
PalmPDF (http://www.metaviewsoft.de/en/Software/PalmOS/Freeware/PalmPDF/index.html), a free, open source PDF viewer for PalmOS devices by Henk Jonas, based on the XPDF library. PDF files take a lot of memory and dynamic heap to decode and render. PalmPDF does its best with what you have, adjusting modes to suit available resources. It runs fine on my Tapwave Zodiac 2 with all features enabled.
Plucker (http://www,plkr.org), a free, open source offline HTML reader for PalmOS. Plucker includes a desktop component that will "pluck" websites, and convert the result to a form viewable on the PDA by the Plucker viewer. The desktop is cross-platform, and available for Windows, MAc OS X, and Linux. There are also desktop versions in Java and C++ from other developers. I have about 2,300 HTML formatted books in Plucker format on my PDA, and half the reason for the PDA's existance is to be a Plucker engine. :)
PsMemo (http://www.jove21.com/palm/palmware/psmemo/?ex-lang=en), a freeware replacement for the built-in memopad program.
TCPMP (http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download), The Core Pocket Media Player, a free, open source media player for PalmOS and other devices. TCPMP handles a variety of audio and video files using plugins, including MP3 and Ogg audio, and AVI, MPEG, and MPEG4 video files. The current "bleeding edge" PalmOS version (0.72 RC1) is available here (http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/).
All of these run splendidly on my Tapwave Zodiac 2, and use the full 32xx480 screen. (The Zodiac and TCPMP are just made for each other. :) )

I was surfing around and saw Image Converter 1.5.3 listed at the Japanese support site for the TH55. Is it worth upgrading or finding an English version, if I've already got 1.5 (dated 2004)? How do I know what the latest version is?

is "due yesterday" hi res compatible? it doesnt work in my TX in hi res :(, tried "force16" hack but didnt work. It seems that the windows cant be skinned properly, i see them in black color :/ any help with that?

I have a tungsten E2 if that helps any. It works fine I'm pretty sure it is hi-res compatiable. I could be wrong. Also I don't quiet understand your question is that after you install the app you see it only in black or white even aftera hack. If you have done all that I think it would work. Sorry I'm not much help. I don't know the technical differences between the tx and E2. But I thought they were both hi-res so my understanding is that it should work. You might want to check where you download the app from.

Do you have Resco Explorer? Is that in your exclude list as well? I've noticed if I disable the title bar and scroll bar effects for RE, it doesn't do some weird stuff like redrwing the screen improperly - apparently it uses some non-standard API for skinning itself.

Nope, I use UniCMD instead of RE... but thanks for the info. And as coincidence would have it UniCMD is also on my exclude list. So is Filez but for a different reason (I didn't the sluggishness of the skin draw while in Filez)

I am looking for some word procesor, able to contain- read (formulas) equations
What i would like to do is: i have a lot of mathematical word(.doc) documnents containing equations (single line and not a single line equations) - and i can't find find a tool (programme) which would preserve equations in it's original state (not a single line equations). I hope you understand what i need.
Does somebody know such a programme?
And the thing is when i try to convert .doc to .pdf is ok but when try i put .pdf on to palm (adobe reader) it converts it into a single line -which is a total mass by the way!!

Well, it depends on your needs. There is the built-in ToDo list. You could you the freeware HandyShopper for excellent list support w/alarms. DateBk6 has integrated tasks lists with the calendar. However, I am currently using Life Balance for it's show me what's really important and where my time goes features.

Just wanted to say, this is the best thread in here. Its given me some great research on what I need to add to my TX. Couple questions I didn't find answers to though;
Anyone have a favorite;
-High-res calculator for college level math? (general calc 2)
-Map or 411 like program. (Prefer High-Res) Mostly for basic address's, phone numbers and simple directions.
A program to allow me to adjust the overall screen intensity? Not just the brightness but also the contrast and the color?
Thanks, and you have all been a big help in my reading/lurking.

Welcome to 1src preludejtsyle!
I used to use a third party calculator but the included on with the T|X is pretty good. Don't be fooled by the basic looking calculator when you first open it. Simply hit the right directional pad on the 5 way nav and you will get a quite a few options (calculator changes with each tap of the 5 way nav).
For a 411 app I use the free Directory Assistant (http://www.freeware-palm.com/download-directory-assistant-v3-26.html) app. And I also highly recommend google's own google maps (http://www.google.com/gmm/treo) for palm os. Both the directory assistant and google maps will need your T|X's WiFi or BT connection.

for the college calc, the best is the power48 calc. You just need the roms of the corresponding HP calcs, which can be downloaded from their website. My brother has a 48GX so im used to this1, but you also have the 49G, which is better i guess :p.

I second the recommendation for power48 :D I use the 49G ROM, it's closer to what I'm used to... Be aware though that I have never had a professor that would let me use my pda for a calculator on an exam. Can't say I blame them, my TX can store a lot of information - I've even got entire textbooks on my SD Card.

thanks for the help. On the calc, I won't be using it on exams, but just for general and classroom use when i don't have my TI-83plus or until I can afford to get a new TI-84plus, and quick calcs throughout the day.
I need a directory assistant kind of program that doesn't use wifi, something I can just keep on a card, to have when i need a number or addresses or something similiar.
any suggestions? Again, I prefer High-res, but no loss otherwise.

seems like equal preference between two. I Use ListPro and really like it (despite compat. problems with my TX) but it sounds like Bonsai may be far better. Bonsai mentions compat with DateBk5. Bonsai as good as it sounds?
Oh yeah, my point/question. Read that DateBk5 doesn't synch with outlook. What does that mean? Imagine some things must synch, like calender entries. is this correct? does agendus synch with outlook?
and, even more removed from the re, what's the benefit of photo programs over the one that comes with the TX? And, in that regard (?), do third party net programs work faster than what comes with the tx and is that why people buy them??
time for my meds! ;)

You can find my list of freeware at this post (http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?p=1541388#post1541388) on Brighthand. I'll post it here, but Brighthand is where all updates will go first.
EVERYTHING I post here is FREEWARE!
Space War (http://pdagamesoft.com/PalmOS/Space-War) *****
Tactical game where ships fly in a hex grid to strategically conquer the other. Rise through the ranks and play against friends with the IR port.
Space Trader (http://www.cs.unimaas.nl/p.spronck/picoverse/spacetrader/STDownload.html) *****
A favorite for many years, this game offers addicting gameplay and a variety of ways to become rich through trading - by hook or by crook!
Blocks (http://electronhut.com/games/blocks/) *****
One of the best Tetris clones out there, this one works on most any handheld, and has outstanding graphics, even for greyscale devices.
UniCommand (http://www.unicmd.de/en/download.html) *****
Perhaps THE most powerful file manager for any handheld, UniCMD can manage card/RAM files, handle ZIPs, encryption, images ...
Cave Run (http://www.freewarepalm.com/games/caverun.shtml) ****
Try to lead a ribbon as long as you can through a cave. Three modes spice things up.
CSpotRun (http://32768.com/bill/palmos/cspotrun/) ****
A decent document/book reader. Packs many features into a small space.
iRogue (http://roguelike-palm.sourceforge.net/iRogue/) *****
Roguelike clone, a dungeon-exploring RPG with no real plot, but lots of fun.
LEDHead (http://www.peterhirschberg.com/handheld/ledhead/palm_download.htm) ****
Emulates classic LED-based games like a charm.
Phoinix (http://phoinix.sourceforge.net/) *****
If you can find a better dedicated Game Boy emulator for free, you let me know (by the way, there's a reason why the name is spelled wrong).
The Prison (http://www.freewarepalm.com/games/theprison.shtml) *****
This outstanding Breakout-style game features 60 built in levels - and if that's not enough, it includes a level editor!
Sigma (http://www.freewarepalm.com/games/sigma.shtml) *****
A strategic dice game. The concept may take a few minutes to grasp properly, but once you do, it'll be in your RAM for a long time ...
TCPMP (http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/) *****
The only free do-it-all media player I know of. Pair with Pocket DivX Encoder (http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/) for videos and you have a hit.
YahDice (http://www.mirekw.com/palm/index.html) ****
How can anyone pass up this Yahtzee clone?
Dio Player (http://www.download.com/DioPlayer/3000-2355_4-10413414.html) ****
This free audio player gives many options - like an equalizer!
Noiz (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/palm/noiz_e.html) ****
This game is addicting. Dodge line pulses for as long as you can. See how far you can go with as few misses as possible.
More Heap Hack (http://lukas-grundmann.de1.cc/MoreHeapHack/) ***
This free alternative to the Ultimate Dynamic Memory Hack (UDMH) works quite well on my Zire 71. It's still in alpha, though, so be careful.
Argon V (http://www.harbaum.org/till/palm/argonv/index.html) ***
Still a work in progress, the ONLY free space shooter for the Palm has a lot of potential - if other people join to help it grow!
IR Pong 2 (http://www.harbaum.org/till/palm/ir_pong/index.html) ***
A Pong clone that lets you play against a friend via the IR port, and keeps the scores. But the single player mode is more Breakout than Pong.
Little John Palm OS (http://little-john.net/download.php) *****
Pair with MHH (http://lukas-grundmann.de1.cc/MoreHeapHack/) for the ultimate free portable emulation experience. :D
Abacus (http://www.djajic.com/) ***
This handy spreadsheet program is a tad buggy on OS 5, and version 0.9 lacks crucial features. But, hey, can't argue with the price (free!).
More on THIS POST (through editing) to come.

I know, probably not very many, but you wanted something different. There you go.
And, actually there are a few locksmiths that use the palm and could use this on the palm, they COULD be registered on here. (They had to make it for somebody other than just me.)
Point is, there are lots of programs that fit niche areas, great programs. Everybody is going to say you need some generic program, for example, FileZ. But sometimes you run across a program that is unique and could help in what you personally do, and might help others if they knew about it.

This is true. I use what is now an abandonware app called Tecsync daily on my job. It is obviously very niche in that it is abandonware, so they couldn't make a go of it. They try for about 2 years before giving up.

well yes, i was sad not being able to use it anymore when i switched from m515 to the t|x but the problem was, and think still is:

But I'm using A5 on my TIX and it works perfectly well with Palm To Do .
When you edit something in ToDo it goes in A5 and vice-versa ; if it's a periodic item you can choose: every day/once a week / once a month and so on .
If you decide to postpone something then A5 asks you if it's for this occurence only / this occurence and the ones after . Then when you've boxchecked the item , you can use To Do Transfer to transfer your ToDos in the built-in Palm agenda .
Can't remember where I found ToDo Transfer on the web , will come back later .

Unfortunately, NoSleeps excellent freeware app downloads are all being directed toward Pocketgear. And as we all know, no matter how good the app is, Pocketgear does not host freeware. You will have to try one of the other freeware hosting sites, or google it.

A new application that I found out about here, it is called Apt (formerly known as PAP per-app-prefs), it allows you to assign prefs on a per-app basis, assign long button presses, lock apps... & a whole lot more. You must see it & try it. The author is responsive & cares about users....
There is a free, Lite version which gives limited functionality - only so many apps can get assignments of prefs - as proof of concept.
Reading the userguide for details is a must, there is so much it can do... & details for registration are right there in the .html u/g.
I loved it when I first saw what it could do, & registered it the same day that Pent, the author facilitated reg codes generation....

I agree with that one. I plan on trying it on my Lifedrive. Looks great though and is a real necessity on lots of Treos and Lifedrive.

I posted to this long ago, but some of my favorites have changed.
IM+: Excellent chat program, Jabber, AIM, MSNMessenger, and googletalk.
Versamail: very good connection to work & other e-mail accounts, including Outlook.
NVBackup: (also on sourceforge)
Planetarium:
EasyCalc (easycalc.sourceforge.net) has replaced RPN as my calculator of choice
LYME it's matlab for palm: Wow!
MobileWrite: So I can use graffiti 1 on my Centro.
Softick's Card Export (so I can use the Palm as a backup drive.)
Alpilot: SIGH. This remains the best sports training calculator ever. Out of business! Anybody know how to contact this guy?
I've switched to a Centro (so I could combine my palm and my phone, duh) but don't like the teeny keyboard and inadequate implementation of graffiti (MobileWrite). I miss my clie which really did fantastic recognition.
ack, changing from Clie SJ30 (OS4) to TH55 (OS5)
Just discovered ThinFontFix won't work. Any update anywhere?
Any way to do the equivalent without using a hack? I'm allergic ...

Only somewhat subjective. When you start seeing the same apps over and over again, it gains much more weight. In any event, this is usually a good starting place for new Clie owners, so list away! Oh, and include URLs if you can. Let's make it easy for others to find the apps that we can't live without.

Another big thumbs up for Apt (http://apt-palm.wikidot.com/), which is now free! With its per-app configuration capability, as well as system-wide prefs, macros, complete hard button configuration (like having multiple different menus on each hard button, each with their own apps/DAs lists!), this has to be one of the most powerful pieces of software you can put on an OS5 machine.
And, yes, I just finished reading all 393 of these posts to find some real gems!
