Bingo.

I guess this happens often? cuz i would have never guess. (tho iM sure the instructions might have mentioned it....just that it is a japanese unit, so i naturally just never bothered to decipher the goods)

Thanks!

Some have even exchanged their units over it too:).

So don't feel bad, some of the best have been a victum of it.

n2ifp: totally unrelated, but since when have the Ham Radio Call-signs been less than 6-digits?

I used to be into it (my dad forced me into HIS hobby) and my dad is still actively ve3iop ;)

It all depends on the license class, extra class used to be only 4 characters here in the states, but have long since run out. At one time calls were even 3 chracters and still are for some special events. W1AW, for example goes back to 1933 or earlier. By your dad's call, I can tell he got his in Canada. Usually novices got the six character call, but some keep theirs, even when moving upward in license class.

yeah we're canadians from Toronto (but i live in toy-capital now in Tokyo/Japan)

I imagine he just kept his call-sign...he is quite attached to it...you know how it is :)

Yep, it's a personal thing and also a public service. Years ago, some worked very hard at it and are proud of their accomplishment. There is also a certain camaraderie. At one time it used to open a lot of doors for employment. It still is an import part of International Space Program. I remember several years ago making contact with the ISS as it orbited overhead via a handheld radio.

Sorry about the off topic thread:)!

ok, now that you mentioned your dad's license, I can now admit that my father (age 59) also has his call-sign as a on his license plate....
But come to think of it, i think it was the other-way around. Back then (70's) they didnt have personalized plates yet in toronto...I think that's how he came up with his call-sign.

Are there moderators on this forum that lock threads? Jeez, then again...I started this topic, I took this thread waay off course. Sorry. Now who do I inform to lock this thread?
