I have problems with Lexar. Sony and SanDisk are fine.

what is the "magic gate" stuff?

I had to ask that too.

Well, the MagicGate sticks are almost exactly like the purple sticks. There are 2 things different:

1: They usually cost more.

2:And most important, they can play ATRAC3 music files.

If you have MP3 files you want to listen to on your Clie, you can store them on a MagicGate stick, but the purple will work just as well.

If you have ATRAC3 music files that you want to listen to on your Clie, you will need the MagicGate stick. ATRAC3 files do not play on the purple sticks.

Other then that, they are the same.

The cheapest I saw a purple 128 MB stick: $35-40

And a 128 MB MagicGate stick: $99

So get the MagicGate if you need ATRAC3 support, but if you don't, stick with the purple ones.

Hope this helps.

Magic Gate is the name for the Copyright Protection Technology that Sony integrates to the Memory Stick. It also works in compliance with SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative). In other words, it is the same as a Memory Stick but with copyright protection restrictions.

The white (MagicGate) MS is too expensive to my taste. A couple of months ago I got 128MB SanDisk from Amazon for $27. Can MagicGate beats that price?

The only thing the regular purple (blue) MS cannot do is to record ATRAC3 music, but I'm happy with MP3. I can fit about 40-42 tracks (174 minutes) of MP3 in one of 128MB purple MS.

Ooops, sorry, forgot to log in. Well, as I said, that is what Magic Gate stands for. I personally use regular Memory Sticks, since I don't need or care for Magic Gate functionality.

I don't download MP3's, but the point of the ATRAC3 format is to prevent illegal distribution.

So I don't think you could download it if you wanted to anyway.

Most music is MP3, I think.
