View Full Version : sj20 - Anyway to speed up launcher?

Any way to speed up the sj20's Palm default launcher?
I know the screen redraw functions are slow, but it often seems to me like tapping the 'applications' (home) button is the slowest transition of all. Overclocking the CPU helps a bit (like, with FastCPU or Afterburner), but then there are all the communications and beaming issues...
Does the main launcher refresh it's table of programs and icons each time it's loaded? Can this be turned off, or turned to manual if the list is corrupted or changed?

It seems like Afterburner or FastCPU is your only option.
Personally I use App/DA Launcher which includes a "app history" option so that I can switch app without going back to the launcher again. There are other hacks to do this too.
PS After I got my SJ20, I realized how fast was my Visor Deluxe's redrawing... (In Speedy VD's screen is rated at 3xMHz while SL10/SJ20's rated at about 22MHz.)

Thanks. I already use PopUp Favorites for precisely the reason you explain... I can keep 10 apps in the pop-up menu, along with an equal number of 'recent' applications.
So perhaps I'll just have to live with it.

easylaunch has become my most useful hack, I can launch as many programs as I want (practically- right now use it for 8 apps) without going back and forth to the launcher screen. very fast.

Right now, AfterBurner is set at 37MHz with MSImport at Normal (33MHz) on my SJ20, screen refresh is faster, NoStreak is also on at "0" refresh and greyscale mode is enabled.
NoStreak normally was not needed when using AfterBurner, however the WA Clock has issue with AfterBurner, that it will make the screen flicker when quitting the application from it back to ZLauncher, and to my surprise NoStreak solved the issue.
Yet to test IrDA. But HotSync is fine.

To illustrate how slow the SJ20's screen subsystem... :-)
PocketMark 0.21 GraphMarks
SJ20@37MHz 67
VD@Stock 112
VD@30MHz 210
LOL...

As a sidenote, do you notice moire pattern when using ZLauncher? There's a wave pattern from right to left when using ZLauncher on my SJ20.
I tried to run Afterburner at a higher speed and the problem is less severe. However it causes some minor problems.
To my surprise, NoStreak alone can solve the problem, just set it at "0" and lower the contrast.
