View Full Version : To buy or not to buy (a second NX80 of course)

Since most people are panicking and picking up their "backup" CLIEs these days, I was also wondering if I should grab an extra NX80 while I can... Here is my situation:
I still have 2.5 years on my BB warranty with my current NX80. Since BB does not carry CLIEs anymore (well, no other stores will do in near future), if/when something happens to my NX80, I will be "forced" to get another PDA for $600. If I have a back up NX80, I can start using that and get the latest PalmOne or PPC, which will go to eBay directly, to make some money. Does this sound reasonable, or just "extra"?
Would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

So, if your original NX80 breaks in a year or even two years from now you think there will be absolutely NOTHING else on the market that you'll be interested in and you'll really only want to use that backup NX80? Either way, ebay is always there for you.

Investing in yesterday's technology is never a good idea, but the odds of finding a future Palm PDA with all the features of the NX80 are pretty small! If, like me, you'd be happy to live with your current set-up for the next five years, buying a spare one makes a lot of sense. As an example, my old trusty Ericsson R-380 mobile phone still turns heads when I open it up to write a sms on the screen!

Actually, the thought of not finding a pda to substitute my NX80 is scary. However it has happened before. One of the best short wave radios is the IFC2010, and the newer Sony (and other brands) don't stack up. The only real alternative is one that goes for about 3 grand. Maybe that will happen to the NX series, someone will develop a product for a niche (NX users :)) and that model will go for a few grand :(.
On the bright side, I imagine that it will be possible to obtain replacement parts from the usual places. So it should be feasible to extend the life of the NX80 a little more (your chance to make your own monster). However, the NX80 doesn't seem to be built to last.

Hmmm... My NX80 has taken some pretty hard knocks since I got it last August, and it has never let me down. For the most part, I've kept it in my back pocket, sans case, and aside from some cosmetic damage (scratches, worn edges, etc...), it's still spinning like a top. Of course, with recent developments being what they are, I went out and bought a spare to have on hand should anything untoward happen to my current unit. Provided it survives until something else is released that tickles my fancy, I'll eBay the spare, new-in-box. In my case, it's not so much about "investing" in yesterdays' technology as it is saving for a rainy day. Wytnucls pretty much hit the nail on the head in his post.

As for you, Tenderidol, it seems like a no-brainer to me. Since you've got that BB warranty, you really can't lose.

i would not want to have 2 identical stuff. Just imagine having 2 Porches. Wouldnt it be better to have a Porche and a Lamborghini just in case the porche has got a flat tyres?

If one Porsche has flat tyres, you simply drive the other Porsche.

But I prefer Mercedes anyway.

I with you on that one Litebulb.

I tried to order an NX73 to back up my NX80 and they botched my order (or I may have given them the wrong CC #), so I did some thinking.

My situation is unique for I already have a dead NX80 that Best Buy let me keep even after I excercised my warranty to have them pay for the new one I purchased on line.

So then I started thinking that I wanted something for backup in case my NX80 breaks again (and if thats the case, I don't want another one) - something that users a memory stick.

Then I stated thinking about getting something different, something smaller, and something with built-in wifi and BT since I can use them both.

I just bought a mp3 player for my workouts, so I don't need to store a bunch of music on cf anymore and now rarely use it because I have 1g Ultra that's way faster that my cf.

I can sell either when something better comes out (either to my friends or on ebay) or just give it to one of my brothers or girlfriend so I'm not even sweatin the future.

My reasons for getting somethig different.

1 Because I don't know what's crackin with OS6 (as far as not knowing when an OS6 unit will be released or if I'll like what's released),

2 Because there's no other Palm device other than the NX80 and TH55 that comes close to what I want (battery life, screen- 480x320 and not hidden at anytime!, BT and WiFi options, MS compatible -atleast for now)

3 Because I was a victim along with others of the "NX80 Sundden Death Syndome" and the possible Cf slot probs (which by the way I've never experienced and there always a cf card in my slot and don't use a case) that could eventually result.

4 Because I don't want 3 NX80s (2 alive, 1 dead-and I still may be able to use the dead 1 for parts if I need too) in my posession.

5 Because I want to see what it's like to carry something smaller in my pocket.

The TH55 fits the bill for now and so I've ordered the TH55E as my backup, but who knows it may become my main! :)

Good Luck on your choice tenderidol as I know you've been through you share of NX80's as well.

You could try to get your dead nx80 resurected. There are a bunch of sites (many listed in the forum) that might have spare parts (even main boards). It should be cheaper and you would have the experience for when your other NX dies. Don't forget to post your experience when you do the surgury :)

I just bought a 2nd Bluteooth TH55 because it has all the features that I could ever want. I have cradles and chargers both at home and work plus a travel charger and invested in large memory sticks for my video camera and Clie. It would cost me at least $250 to switch to another brand.

I realize that the future usually means better features but in this case, I look at it in reverse. Instead of hoping for eBay, if something better comes along before my first TH55 breaks, I can always SELL it on eBay. Sure I would take a loss but I am sleeping much better these days.

I get frightened at the talk of smart phones which don't interest me in the least and can't believe they will be as popular as in being stated on all the PDA web sites.

My recommendation is to go for the insurance and keep a second NX80 close at hand.

Darn it!!! The time is ticking and I have not made my mind yet. At one side, I looooooove my NX80! It has everything... On the other hand, I have the whole 2.5 years on the BB warranty and who knows what will happen in 2.5 years, right?
I have been trying to be "extra" careful with my NX80 these days... Sucks!!!
Thanks for all the replies... Back to thinking more on this ;(
