Ok, so last week I decided after a long period of deliberation that I was finally going to buy a Zire 72. I've been looking at PDA's for a while now, and the 72 fit my budget and needs nearly perfectly. It shipped over the weekend, and I got it 2 days ago. I charged it and the next day decided to get to know my new friend a little better. This being my first PDA and all I've got some serious learning and adjusting to do. Additionally, I've got some problems and issues that I can't seem to find solutions to elsewhere, so of course to the web I go. Now, my first question is about hotsyncing and the fact that I can't get my 72 to do it. So. I've installed all the software provided, and have hotsync manager on. I plug in all the necessary usb plugs, and turn my 72 on. Then I make sure the settings for hotsyncing on my 72 are correct and press go! Yet, it just sits there for a minute, and then says connection can't be made to the computer. Now, I think it may be an issue with the computer not detecting the usb device, but I can't see why. I know the usb ports work since I have plugged and unplugged my scanner a number of times to make sure the usb is operational (the scanner is currently unplugged). I don't think any of the surfaces are blocked, since it's brand new. Now, I really don't know what the deal is. Please if you have any suggestions post here, or feel free to e-mail me or whatever. Thanks for your help. And if you need anymore information about my situation just ask, I'll be here.

(posting this same post on brighthand just in case :D)

Suggestion. Do you have any other devices that connect using a mini USB cable (Sony digital camera, Mp3 device, something like that). If you do, then substitute that cable for the Palm one and see if the connection works. If it does then you've got a duff cable.

Another alternative is to uninstall all the software and reinstall, see if that helps.

It would also help to know which operating system you're using on your PC, as that might help some suggestions.

If the USB is plugged into my computer and then I plug it into my Z72, I get a little bleep (this is on my computer at work, I have the sound turned off at home).

Try this, download the test version of BackupBuddy 2.0 from: http://www.bluenomad.com/bb/prod_backupbuddy_details.html . And see if it works with this sync app. Maybe your installation of the Palm Sync app and conduit got hosed. And check to see if your "Device Manager" in XP has your USB port operating successfully.
