View Full Version : Choose Your Palm Device - Stand Up and Be Counted

I like to cut through the "red tape" on things. I hear people talk about this device vs. that device and so on, but let's see who is using what here at 1SRC.

Don't think of this as an "Us vs. Them" contest, but rather a census of the new landscape.

Palm Users: Stand Up and Be Counted! :D Vote in the poll above

I personally go straight to the TH-Series forum 99% of the time when I come to the site. I rarely go out of it either. So I figured that it made sense to post in each forum to get the most number of users to respond and for a more accurate view of the member devices here.

TH55 without a doubt. I researched for a while and decied that was the best model for me.

Coincidentally Consumer Reports thinks the same. :D

Therefore, with or without Sony's announcement I would still buy the TH55 (with Bluetooth) today.

Interesting that 9 people still have an older Clie unit and no one has an older Palm unit. I'm still using my trusty T665 and it works just fine for what I want. It's also interesting that the poll is running about 80/20 of Clie's over Palm's

Cyker
06-04-2004, 02:44 AM
I bet most of those older Clies are T665s & N770s, some of Sony's best work :D

Palm just never had anything close back then, but if we had this same poll in a few years time I reckon lots of people would still have their Zires & Tungstens :)

Palm really got it right with the T|3. 'Tho I still think my TH55 is better :D

EDIT: Wow, Sony are really wiping the Floor with everybody else!

Cliesource was much bigger than PalmOne city, so it's not that surprising that there are more Clies in this poll. If you take a look on the Brighthand forum you will find more PalmOne users as compared to Clies, and several still use older Palms. I started with a Clie (SL10) but am now very happy with my Tungsten E.

Well I'm a little suprised so far by the lack of Palm users represented in the pole. Certainly more than 24 would have been interested in voting, but then someone mentioned that ClieSource had a larger user base.

I'm hopeful that with the weekend coming that this post will bubble back to the top a few times so more people who 'check-in' with the new site get a chance to sound off.

I've had my T3 for seven months now...a rare thing for me. Typically I upgrade every 4-6 months. The T3 really is a great PDA--size, speed, screen, quality. My only wish is that it had WiFi. I use the SJ-33, I want to buy another Sony but I'm not going down the same road I did with Handspring. Shortly after I bought the Visor Edge, they stopped making it and all PDA's and then Handspring itself disapeared.

I'm still not sure about smartphones. I don't fancy holding a computer to my face and none of them come with bluetooth headsets yet.

Ok ok, I'll get off the soapbox

Proud owner of a TH55.

Of course, my N760C and T665C are still in perfect working order. Only thing wrong is my N760C has dust under the screen and slightly degraded battery life. Mainly used for ebook reading and playing some games. T665C was passed to my older brother.

Actually, maybe I'll give my N760C to my other brother to upgrade his semi-functional Palm IIIc (which he uses only to wake him up now)...

Tungsten|T3 here.

I've had Palms and Sonys before, each great in their time. When my T665C broke, the T3 had just hit the market. What a great device! I made the transition from ClieSource to PalmOneCity when the latter cranked up, but still visited a few forums on CS pretty regularly. Now I don't have to bounce back and forth. :)

I'll be interested to see what the T4 offers, although I'd rather see an OS6 upgrade for the T3 at the moment.

I have a Sony Clie PEG-N710c that is upgraded to Palm 4.1 OS software (offical SONY upgrade that I paid $50 for, not the hacked version). It is theoretically the equivalent to a PEG-N760c with the upgrade. I also have a Lexar 128 MB memory stick that I store all my medical textbooks and software in. I am probably underutilizing my PDA in terms of all its functionality (never touched the Mp3 or Photostand features), but I still love my PDA. I originally bought it for $270 around July 2001 which was at the time, a pretty good deal.

Over time, I've broken the flip cover (the hooks broke off), dropped it several times that it now makes a clicky sound every time I press the Graffiti area with a stylus, oh and now it doesn't respond to my graffiti writing 100% as accurately as it could be. Maybe 80% of the time now. An old Clie that now has a personality... ;)

I shudder to think what it is worth now in today's market. 50 cents? :) Maybe $1 if I threw in the memory stick. :D

It's the NX80 for me, for now. Thinking of switching to the euro version of the TH55 before I head off to Purdue. Need the wifi for the hotspots available throughout the campus. Also tired of the brickishness of the NX.

btw, I'm in love with the design of the TH. If they were cheaper, I would eat one.

I just recieved my "new" Tungsten W from Ebay. It only cost me $95 with shipping, plus I got to buy a 128mb SD card, which I haven't recieved yet, all for under the $150 I sold my iPaq 1910 for! I love the TW! It's so cool, and I get to use the Internet and Email anywhere!

I went from a Palm V to a N760C to a NX70, but I've upgraded recently to a UX50. It couldn't decide between that and the TH55, but I got my slightly used UX50 + 512MB for the same price as a new TH55... you do the math :). The TH design was too "classy" for me... and I'm kinda rugged, so I thought a clamshell would suit me better.

I'm in the process of switching over to one of the last of the NX80s - after waiting for what seemed like FOREVER for Sony to come out with a High-Res+ Clie with the T form. When the TH55 finally came out, it just wasn't my cup of tea, so I rushed out and got THE LAST new NX80 at Amazon.com.

Any how, I voted for the NX80, since that one is becoming my main PDA. However, I still use the T665 for a few things, and when I'm travelling REALLY light, I only take along my Samsung I500 Smart Phone.

I'm sorry to say this. After being a Palm user for almost 5 years now (I had a PPC Jornada previously), due to all the fuzz about Cobalt restrains (for us users of course!), lack of competition (for PalmOne), low quality control on Palm Devices (my T3 has more aching parts than my granny) and increased support for Windows Mobile OS. I'll be stowing away my T3 in a drawer and start using a Toshiba e805.

My NR70 went bad less than a year after I purchased it. I BB upgraded to an NX70V and I can't live without it. About two weeks ago the "p" key began to misfire, I have to hold it down hard to get it to work. All of a sudden I realized "this thing could fail!" and I panicked. Knowing Sony left the market I did a search for a replacement/backup PDA and found NOTHING on the market that matches the NX series for me.

A couple of days ago I ordered one of the few remaining NX80Vs on the market. I should now be able to survive for a couple of years until something else comes on the market that might catch up to the NX.

I'm a movie nut and have converted about 75 of my DVDs to clie format. I put them all on several DVD disks. Now I can download them in a few minutes. I have a small collection of 8 CF cards, 2 256 MS Pros, and a few 128M memory sticks. I play the videos on the Pros, transfering movies from the CF cards to the Pro. I can take a two week vacation without bringing the laptop and do almost everything with the PDA.

I'm looking forward to the better camera, voice recorder button, backlight keyboard, smaller format, better screen, and better battery life on the NX.
I'm a little worried about the folding CF slot for reliability though.

NX Rules.

To all you Graffiti2 users - There is another way!! Find the Graffiti1 libraries and follow the installation instructions :D

On a tangent, this is one of the big turn-offs for me about OS6; I seriously doubt the G1 hack will work with it and PalmOne do not appear to give a toss that they won the Xerox case, and seem to want to stick with G2 for some sadomasochistic reason.

I'm currently using a Tungsten E. I voted tungsten since it is my current palm. I previously owned a m130. I didn't know until I got on this forum there were non palm brand palm os devices. So in the near future or so I believe I will be considering upgrading. I will likely do this for a palm os6 device. I'm happy with the T E despite the broken power button so many have had happen. I just use the button to check the time thanks to the suggestion of a user on this forum, to turn it on. I'm not sure if I will want a palmone as looking at the T5 it is a nice device but I think based on what I have read there are some features it doesn't have that I may want. Aside from the fact that I will likely want os6.

If anyone has any recommendations or sites with reviews and comparisons I'd greatly apreciate the info. You can private message the info if you prefer.

I have a Zire 71, this is the first PDA I have actually gotten to use, because I had bought two in the past and both were stolen before I could register them.

I bought my first one in 2001, a Palm, and it got stolen. I then bought in December 2002 a Palm, I think it was an I705? it had a b/w screen with Internet connectivity. And that got stolen.

My fiance bought me a Zire 71 last August, and he now says that I love it more than him. I am growing bored with it though, and I want something super-gadgety, and I am coming to learn that Palm is not a reliable manuafacture. Is is true that Sony is going out of the PDA business? im currently on a well used and worn out Clie n760c. i got from a nurse that didnt like using grafitti. im a paramedic in theorlando tourist area, and i use my clie to hold all my medical references (mostly skyscape products) i also use smartlist, docstogo and agendus extensively. the only games i play are bejeweled and video poker.

im looking to buy a sony th55, trying to get the wife behind me spending 400 bucks on a "toy" is difficult. man i haTE that a discontinued product line is still so expensive. i love the clies and hate that sony dropped out, definite lack of choices now in the palm world.

my first PDA was a casio boss, then a sharp sumthing or other(monochrome proprietary os...) then a visor handspiring (went thru 2) and now the clie n760c

i like making custom smartlist databases, and if i get off my butt i'll read that palm programming book i got and make some palm EMS programs for our local area. most of the medics have PDAs and most are palm OS, but few other co-workers are power users that tweak their machines like i do.

most are underutilizing the machine.

im thinking that an ipod like PDA with a 4gig hd, newton like with better handwriting recognition is on the horizon, the picture ipod is a step in that direction.

or maybe something like the new japan zaurus on the palm os.

hmmmmm

thoughts?

T|E the best? Ha! Slow CPU and less heap ram than the Zire 71! The Zire 71 was faster and had 1mb of heap ram but less storage. To watch a movie on the T|E you need to overclock it. My Tapwave Zodiac 1 totally pwns your T|E. 200mhz and 10mb heap ram.

Get your facts straight.. obviously your "pwns* status has impaired your ability to check facts.. but we already knew that... T|E has nearly 2MB of heap ram. And with UDMH, the heap memory isn't an issue. And I've never had to overclock my T|E to watch an .avi movie either... Guess somebody opened their yap too soon.. :p

Ok, sorry. I was told by Frenchie from PalmInfocenter those specs. Emparrasing. But it doesn't change the fact that the Zodiac is better. Frenchie told me he had to overclock and run UDMH to watch a movie. He must have not converted the video or didn't do it correctly.

Cyker

Well, even my 123MHz TH55 can view movies, but you try running a DVD-spec AVI on it and it'd probably blow up :p

I want to see how the T|5, T|3 and LD perform at those levels, but the Zod will always have an edge because it is the ONLY Palm in the market that can do MPEG4 decoding in hardware (With TCPMP, the most awesomest player evaar!! :p :D) and also, like the TH55 and several other Clies, it can also off-load the rotation and scaling to hardware too; The CPU has to do sod all practically, except for the audio decoding (Which the TH could do in software, but only for MP3 44.1kHz streams...), which means it's ludicrously smooth for such a relatively slow CPU.

I still think my TH is better 'tho - The thing with my Zod, is that it does two things very well: Games and Multimedia.
For everything else, it's a pain in the *** - I tried taking it to work once, but I found it infuriating to use in a work environment. I couldn't really say why, but that's just how it was.
My TH, depite apparently being weaker spec-wise, just feels so much more usable to me. There may be some bias since I've had my TH a lot longer, but something about it just makes it much more pleasent to use...
That and I can run it over the course of a week without worrying about charging ;)

Sonys VZ90! Definetly! This is the only Palm PDA with OLED screen. I want to can read the screen of the palm in the light of the sun! But unfortunetly this model isnt for european market. Sadly :( .

In time when Sony was an REVOLUTIONARY company in PDA market, Palm was only an EVOLUTIONARY company (or maybe an involutionary one?). All good thinks in Palm PDA marked was madet first by Sony. Palm only was adoptet the sonys revolutionarys ideas. First 320x320 screen = Sony. After that, Palm. First 320x480 screen = Sony. After that, Palm. First OLED screen = Sony. After that, ... Im waiting for 2 years now to buy an PALM with OLED screen, but sadly PALM dont want to make one (or maybe cant!), and Sony isnt developing PDAs anymore.

PALM is a company pushed in front by COMPETITION. PALM dont have his initiatives. PALM only adopt the standards maked by others. This is the reality! When we will have an 640x480 screen? Pocket PCs arleady have.

With an Sony Clie with AudioDSP we can listen MP3s for around 70 hours! With my Zire72, I can listen only 4.

Im also liked the Zodiac video acceleration. When we will have this feature in PALMs?

But how about the HDD of the LifeDrive? Only 4GB? The iPods have 40GB! How this is possible? Or maybe this is possible only for Apple!

Im waiting for years from PALM to make PDAs. They only make cellphones (with windows inside).

Every day I hear news about a new Pocket PC machine. From Palm I hear 1-2 news in one year. And when we hear a news from PALM, we hear a news like: cellphone+winCE.

So, in conclusion, Im expecting (and I want) from PALM a REVOLUTION in PDA market, or they dont will be anymore (in next few years) in the market (or maybe they are already deads?).
