Hello,

I'm new to this forum so I would like to provide some personal background. I have been a Palm OS user since the first Pilot 5000 from US Robotics several years ago. I wish my PC could run run something so reliable as this OS. My second PDA was the Palm III and my latest acquisition was the Clie N760C.

I'm now considering the NZ and would appreciate some information about it.

1) Does it handle any standard CF type card or only Sony's models?

2) At this time I understand Sony has a wireless LAN type. Is it IEEE 802 compatible? I have a Wireless LinkSys switch router that I use to connect my home network to the internet and would like to know if Sony's card is compatible. Anybody used it with the LinkSys Etherfast Wireless Access Point?

3) Does the NZ have Grafitti input? I could not find a 100% confirmation of that anywhere and did not see a stylus in any photo I found. I'm already so used to the Grafitti that a keyboard only input is a minus point for me.

4) How does old Palm OS applications behave under the Palm OS 5? I had some problems running OS 3 in the Clie's OS 4.1.

5) How's the AV output? Is it possible to connect it to a video projector in order to show a PowerPoint presentation, for example?

6) How's the video playback? My N760C has some "hiccups" while playing video.

Thank you very much in advance!

Cheers,
Rossi

1. The only thing the CF slot will handle is Sony's wireless network card. Period. At least one company is working on a CF driver that will support CF memory cards.

2. Sony's wireless CF card is an 802.11b card and should work with any 802.11b system.

3. Yes, standard Grafitti input with a collapsible Grafitti area.

4. Most older Palm apps I've tried work fine. The ones that don't are hacks (used via things like HackMaster) and drivers.

5. I haven't tried the AV output.

6. Video playback is very smooth.

av output is fun, a great way to impress friends, and yes i believe someone in here said that they have already done a powerpoint with it.

The CF slot can also handle certain 56k analog modems, too.

I'm now considering the NZ and would appreciate some information about it.

Right now, the only CF card that will work is the Sony WiFi card, But I have heard of new CF drivers on the way that will handle memory cards, etc..

2) The WiFi works great, but no experience here with Linksys. Airport and SMC here.

3) Yes the NZ has Grafitti. It's really neat because Grafitti is not a a fixed area like what your used to. It's a software based or screen based area. Also known as a collapsible area. So when you don't need Grafitti, you collape the area, and you have more screen realestate.

4) I can't comment as much as most people, but most programs have been converted to run OS 5.

5) I haven't tried AV output.

6) For what video playback I have done, it's smooth and fast. No problems.

Thanks all for the replies. Another person posted a link with a movie made with it and it looked quite nice. I would like to see how the NZ would play it. My PC was seamless, but it's a Pentium with more than 500Mb RAM. :-))

I found it at CNET for $686 + %7 S&H. Not bad. $100 less than the MSRP.

If I got it right. Question 1 is a negative. I was hoping to get cards like GPS, expanded memory, etc. there.

Which modem vendor supports the NZ's CF slot?

My decision now is at the following level:
I was considering buying a Sony 5 Megapixel camera that can also do mpegs. Price is the same. But, as this PDA already has the camera it's one less stuff to carry around. However, it's a huge step down in the photo definition. The camera also has night shot capability.

Is very much depend on your core reqiurement really.

FYI, there isn't any brand or OEM who are manufacturing CF accessories can access the CF slot on the NZ, except the one and only wifi card from sony. seems like you have to wait for soft pocket to give you the solution. (you can find on the following link)

This is true! Some of the Japanese modem drivers have been converted to english for some modems, thanks go to Pelaca for doing so.
